Glassblower in the family
I'm looking for info on Uncle Manny, he was born in 1870, around Sheraden Pa, his parents were Orpha M and John George Berry, he also had a sister Lulu. I can't find him in any census that I have access too, my mom says he was a glassblower, but not sure where this was, she has a couple items that he made, one is a bugle I believe the other a walking stick. I have two middle names its either George or Eckert. Can anyone help me

Re: Glassblower in the family
Sorry, I can't find him either. Orpha M. (age 30) and Lula A. (age 12) Berry are living with Orpha's parents Stephen C. and Martha A. Gibson in 1880. John George Berry isn't there, and there's no Manny in the house, only a Stephen C. Gibson, age 8, grandson

Re: Glassblower in the family
I found the same, but mom insists that she remembers her Uncle Manny and he was the brother to Lulu. I told her I couldn't find him in any of the census. My mom grew up in NJ,Pleasantville to be exact, so this is where she would know him from. I asked my mom about that, her greatgrandmother having a child named after her father, she says she isn't sure she wants to know anymore. Another mystery to work on I guess. Thank you for checking

Re: Glassblower in the family
Quite possible he's there, just not called Manny (perhaps Emanuel or some derivation, either as a first or middle name)? He could have been living with someone else at the time (was John G. living elsewhere during that census? It doesn't say that Orpha was widowed.) I also tried to check Ohio, since there were many glass companies in Eastern Ohio, but there's not enough info to go on right now.

Re: Glassblower in the family
I don't know I have them together in the 1900 census, it says they were married 33 years, unfotunately I couldn't find much on John G either, The only other things I found about him he was in the civil war and that benefits were paid to Orpha. That makes three mysteries to solve. Stephen C, Emmanuel and Lulu's first husband. Thank you again,

Re: Glassblower in the family
The only Berry listed as a glassmaker in the 1880 US Census is George married to Mary. He is listed as being born around 1849 in England and is living in Philadelphia PA in 1880. He is a stain glass maker. The children listed are: Emily E., Lillu B. B. (could be Lulu), John, and George. John is listed as 7 years of age and is the closest to being born in 1870. George is the youngest. This sounds like the family you are looking for. I wonder if Manny was a nickname not related to his given name, like look at the little man became Manny? We have nicknames in our family that have no relation to the given name.

Re: Glassblower in the family
I have repeatedly asked my mom about Emmanuel, and she insists that he is lulu's brother, his mother Orpha and father John George. Her family talked about him, he was her Uncle Manny. It looks like this is going to be a tough one, working another angle, from distant family, crossig my fingers on that. Thank you

Re: Glassblower in the family
Hello. I created a Facebook Group for genealogists who have 18th & 19th century American glassblowers in their trees. Since the trade was in high demand and the skills passed from father to son, the lives of Early American glassblowers were often interconnected as they crossed paths from job to job. Hopefully, using traditional research and genetic genealogy, we'll find more of those connections as we network and share information. https://www.facebook.com/groups/336745909842154/My 4th great-grandfather, Daniel Robinson was a glassblower in New York State in the early 1800's, and in my research I've stumbled upon many other glass-workers.
