Hi,

I am looking for some information on a Glass Manufacturer by the name of Thomas Stock. On the 1841 census he is listed as a glass manufacturer, and was staying that night on a farm with his farmer brother in Thurston-le-Moors in Cheshire. He next pops up in his brothers will in 1846 as executor. This time he is listed as a glass manufacturer located in Liverpool.

I have not found him on the 1851 census. from the census documents it appears that he was born around 1800, not in the county of Cheshire. His younger brother Edward was born in Cheshire and had a farm at Ness.

I have been trying without luck to find out info about the glass manufactuers of Liverpool without any luck.

There was a large and well known glass making center about 60 miles from Cheshire called Stourbridge. Perhaps your ancestor worked there at some point? Since Liverpool was used as a shipping point your ancestor may have been a glass vendor as opposed to a glass maker... often the glass families had members who made glass and those who sold it. Both Chesire and Liverpool are close to Stourbridge so it may be that the glass was made at Stourbridge and then shipped to Liverpool via Cheshire which is on the way from Stourbridge to Liverpool. One thing I can attest to... if your relative was a member of a glass making or selling family... they tended to move a lot! It appears that glass companies would start and end and then move on a regular basis as the raw materials they needed were depleted in a given area. Here is glass firm in Liverpool established in 1901 http://www.theglazine.com/newsarchive/PearsonHetley.html

Hi,

Thanks for the lead I'll look it up. My direct ancestor was born in Cheshire but his older brother (the glass manufacturer) was not. But my ancestor was a farmer, so they may not have come from a glass family per say.

The census documents and will both say 'glass manufacturer'.

The earliest recorded glass house in Liverpool that I am aware of dates back to the early 1700's when glassmakers from Bristol (declining industry) including some Canningtons moved to Lancashire. Henzeys from Stourbridge also set up at Prescott. Josiah Pooles "Old Glass House" and the equally ill fated Penkett brothers "New Glass House" were short lived. Many were small affairs living a hand to mouth existence and employing extended family. When it worked well they made a good living - but bankruptcies were an ever present hazard. I suggest you get hold of the Liverpool trade directories and try looking for him there.

There is a fairly detailed review "The glass making trade in Lancashire & Cheshire" by C. P Hampson (a glassmaking family descendent) in Tranasactions of the Lancashire & Cheshire Antiquarian Society 1932.

My own glass making ancestors are Cook(e)s originally from Gateshead and Newcastle but later around Stourbridge and Manchester - who also took the trade to Australia & NZ in the mid 1800's. I'd be very interested to hear from any Cook(e) glass maker descendents in Australia or NZ. The trailing e comes and goes in the early parish records.

Martin Brown

Hi By any chance do the stock families in your tree include Joseph Stock's who were married into the Shutt families, in particular Thomas Shutt but probably also Richard Shutt. Very interested to exchange info if a match. thanks

Hello Stuart,

I need to check for you but I know that James Stock married an Ann Shutt.
You can contact me at woodlands2@westnet.com.au which might be quicker, and in the meantime I will look them up for you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

Interestingly Ann Shutt was the brother of Richard Shutt and Thomas Shutt both glass manufacturers. Thomas Shutt was credited as the major player behind the British Crown Glass Company and Joseph Stock was his partner. Any knowledge of the other Shutt's involvement in the glass industry would be appreciated. Both Richard Shutt and his father (also Richard) ended up in London - the son at least involved in glass
