Jim, I am a Stenger descendant. My 6th and 8th Great Grandmothers were both named Anna Stenger and both married Walter men. This line goes back to the 1400s in the Spessart area of Germany. I credit Janet Nichols (who I affectionately call my genie fairy godmother! She is my 3rd cousin) with helping learn how to do this the right way. Yes it can be daunting but it is learnable. Send me your direct email because I have some things you may want to take a look at. You can reach me at lbozzay@relaquest.com.

Hi Jim, I just got this from Luc Stenger. Hopefully it will help you. Regarding this request I finally got some news !

A Jean Jacques (Jacob) STENGER from BOUXVILLER in Alsace applied for a passport in 1828 (so for emigration)
Beware you have 2 localities with the same name, one in Departement 67 and one in Departement 68.
I would suggest historically starting with 67. Registers are available online so this person should go through the registers carefully.

Thanks for your most recent information. Please excuse my ignorance but I don't understand your reference to Department 67 and 68. And when you refer to registers, what registers are you talking about? You mentioned an 1828 passport application but the link you provided was for passenger lists, none of which were in the 1828 +/- timeframe. Sorry I am not more perceptive.

Thanks so much for your continuing efforts.

Jim

Hi Jim, Think of 67 and 68 like the first two digits of a zip code. They relate to specific areas in France. If you google France 67 or France 68 you can see them. 67 is Bas-Rhin in the Alsace area. 68 is Haut-Rhin in Alsace.

Sorry, Luc did not send me the link to the registers of emmigration. The link I sent was for a variety of French genealogical sites. I thought it was among them.

I will ask him where those are online.

Please remember that gypsy (German Sinti, Romanichals and Manouche) families intermarried with local native tribes who were polygamous. At times, many different last names, I've found, can indicate a family in a polygamous situation/relationship. Many of these families were related many times over as well due to breeding laws concerning mixed heritage and interracial marriages.
