I would suggest that Deownes might be "The Downs" - the stretch of water between the South and North Foreland off Deal. A very important place for sailing ships to wait for the right wind to take them into the Channel or round the North Foreland into the Thames as well as being a sort of parking place for ships leaving Chatham. No proof but in the absence of anything better - might be worth enquiring.

John,

I said previously that Thomas Tiltman went to Staiths, from which you might presume I meant Staiths near Whitby on the north Yorkshire coast. Well, I was looking at that Staiths this morning and noticed that Thomas Tiltman is not on it, so I did a bit of digging and there was another Staiths. This is Burnham Overy Staithes, which is now a suburb of Wells-next-the-Sea on the north Norfolk coast, and their list says he went there in February 1821. There is no forward station for him which means he was still there at the end of 1822.

The source for this is: ADM 175/1 p. 16, 141

Edit: I just checked my original message and realise I didn't actually say he went to Staiths. The sequence is this:
1. He was at Minster until 10-Aug-1819, when he joined Warden Point.
2. He left Warden Point on 8-Feb-1821 and went to Staiths.
3. He Joined Burnham Overy Staiths on 8-Feb-1821 and was still there in 1822.

Yours, Martin

Hi Martin

Many thanks for your reply to my ten year old message. I shall have to dive back into my archives as this was part of my research into my wife's ancestors. Her maiden name was Tiltman and they were quite a maritime family. Cannot remember where I got "Deownes" from but will check.

Your response after such a long time is much appreciated.

Sincere regards
John

Misner Haven coastguard station was on the East coast near Southwold. Downderry is on the Channel coast, just east of Looe in Cornwall. I've not heard of Deownes and suspect you have mis-spelt or misread it.

I have a number of Tiltman's in the coastguard:

1. Henry Tiltman joined Cockleshell Hard from Elmer 16-Dec-1819, and removed to Orford Haven 15-Jan-1823
2. Howard Tiltman joined Minster from Newhaven 30-Jan-1819, and removed to Shellness 10-Aug-1819
3. Thomas Tiltman joined Warden Point from Minster 10-Aug-1819 and was still there in 1822
4. Richard Tiltman joined Misner Haven from Mundsley 8-Oct-1835, and removed to Crouch River 23-Aug-1837

Yours, Martin
Trying to ascertain if Richard Johnson, who appears in the 1861 Census, in Hastings, Sussex, as a 'retired customs officer' (age 71) is the son of Richard Johnson and Mary Barber, and was born 1791 in Suffolk (Wrentham or Covehithe or South Cove)
If anyone could do a look up at Kew for any information about him, -I would be grateful. I live too far away to get to the Nat. Archives offices. Or alternatively if anyone can point me in the right direction to confirm the parentage.

Hello again

I have written on two prior occasions to this message board but for some reason did not get an alert from Ancestry after the second posting in which I gave quite a lot of detail. That was back on 30 January 2009 by sdmcd. Tonight I have had an alert which I have followed up on for 1 November and as a consequence found a lot of other messages which I have worked my way through.

Yes, I have an Ellen Morricy/Morrison (daughter of Silvester & Ellen Morrison) married to a James George who I think was born about 1841. I have James George and his wife Ellen having 6 children (Cordelia, Isabella, Edward, Mary Ellen, James Silvester and Annie). I have no other information other than names (no place of marriage or dates, no birth dates for children etc etc). It would also be good to get any photos of the area as it is now or even historical photos if anyone has some. Any information re the early history of the people, names, dates etc would be so much appreciated.

Our ancestry goes back through Ellen Morricy/Morrison who married the James George to Ellen's father and mother--Silvester Morrissey/Morrison b 1827 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England and wife, Ellen Whelton born about 1829 in Ireland. They were married in 1849 in County Cork, Ireland. So it was their first born (daughter Ellen) who married the James George.

Going back a step further it was Silvester's brother John (my husband's Great Grandfather) who came to Australia and married the daughter of a convict (my husband's Great Grandmother). Silvester and John's father was a Matthew Morrissey b 1796 in Cork, Ireland and he married an ellen O'Sullivan/Sullivan born about 1792 in Kinsals, Kerry, Ireland.

Back on 30th January, "waitwith" answered my message and asked for my email, but since I did not get that alert I have only just read that request tonight. My contact is: dmcd8656@bigpond.net.au

I would really love to hear from anyone who is following this thread if they can give further information or photos that are helpful. Because my information of ancestors in the Sennen Cove area is very sketchy, much of what has been posted does not mean a lot to me. Any further information and/or explanations would be appreciated.

Cheers
sdmcd (Shirley)
Australia

I am just picking up on messages about my Hugh Pill ancestry at Sennen Cove. I have contacted jo and find that we are descended from the same line. I have visited her in Havant and seen her research which is superb. I have picked up on your reference to marriage of a Morrisey with one of the local George family at Sennen. The Pill family and the George family are very much intertwined as are my Penroase family. What a tangle of marriages etc. Alan Penrose Binns. in Burnley .Lancs
Someone raised a question as to why Pill children were born in Lowestoft. Hugh Pill was stationed there in the 1820s. before he was stationed in Sennen. Hugh Pill was born in Gorran Haven Cornwall in 1789. He entered the coastguard Service in about 1816. Family tradition says he was at Trafalgar but cannot prove it. There was a John Pill Able Seaman recorded in the Trafalgar Muster for HMS.Victory.That means he survived the battle. He was listed as an able seaman, Prest Man. Native of Cornwall, aged 25? Dont know who he was. Alan

They had a daughter Florence Derbyshire who married a Frederick Richardson. They had a daughter Audrey Richardson who married a William Ross from Scotland and now she lives in Australia. If this family seems familiar could you let me know. Thankyou, Danielle Ross.

Edwin Segrave was born in 1818 in Wycombe, Bucks, the son of John Segrave, an Excise Officer and my great great great grandfather, who had lived in 93? West Street, Great Marlow, or possibly Wycombe and Sarah Ann Segrave, (nee Sarah Ann Berkin,1789 – 25th June 1872, died age 83). Edwin certainly had at least one brother, Samuel who emigrated to Australia who possibly had an older brother Charles.

Initially Edwin was a clerk (and an enumerator for the 1841 Census), then living in the High Street, Great Marlow with his future mother-in-Law, Elizabeth Wade. He went on to become a schoolmaster of the Wycombe Borlase Free School (still exists).

He married Catherine Wade on 1st August 1844 at St Mary’s, Marylebone. They had nine children: Edwin died on the 4th April 1906, whilst living at 4 High Street, Gt. Marlow, leaving an estate of £134.5s.6d),
My great, great, great grandfather was Joseph S. Gilbert, a coastguard on Heligoland in 1870. If you Google "coastguard heligoland" there is a book called "Heligoland Past and Present by Alex Ritesma with a preview of pp81 and 82 which describes how 6 British coastguards were posted in Heligoland in 1868.

Enouggh of that I will try again more briefly.

I dont know about the Morriseys but if they lived on coASTguard Row they probablyknew my ancestors. You say one of them married James George and if so that makes us extended family as My Gt Grandfather Benjamin William Pill born in Lowetoft in 1822 where Hugh was stationed as coastguard, married Nanny Penrose George in Sennen. I have photos of Nanny. She was not very pretty !!! I have a photo of a Dicky George, said to be a relative. He is sitting with a film star before the war called Belle Chrystal. She was in Sennen making a film called Yellow Sands. I would like to see that film. if it still exists. My aunt met Dicky before the war. He weas sitting with a group of old salts on the harbour. One guy said If you be related to Dicky. You be related to us all. I will post this before it vanishes. Send me your e-mail address. I will be able to attach photos to it easier than to this poisting Aaln

Hi, I have been following this thread from time to time with interest as our family too had ancestors involved with the Coastguard at Sennen Cove in West Cornwall, but information is sketchy so if anyone following the Hugh Pill thread has come across info on the Morrissey/Morrison family I would be most interested.

Matthew Morrissey who seemed to change his name to Morrison and his wife Ellen Sullivan have come from Ireland (County Cork) to work in southern England--his occupation noted as Coastguard. Another researcher of this family had long thought there was an Irish ancestral connection and it was questioning of an aged relative which brought to light a memory of the name Morrison, & that he was a Coastguard at Sennon Cove in west Cornwall who was awarded a gallantry medal.

Matthew was by occupation a Coastguard, and was stationed at Portsmouth in Hampshire when son John, who later came to Australia & married, was born. John (b May 1830 Gosport, Hampshire, England) apparently had an older brother, Sylvester born Oct 1857 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, (later in Queen's Navy and served on 'HMS Superb 1842'), an older sister, Ellen who I believe was born & deceased in Kerry, Killarney 1821 before the family came to England, and younger sisters, Isabella b 1832 & Elen Agnes as well as a younger brother, William. We do not know of any other children.

Sylvester Morrissey (oldest son of Matthew & Ellen) married an Ellen Whelton and their first daughter, also Ellen Morricy/Morrison married a James George, a fisherman of Sennen Cove, & a Marriage Cert has been found re that union. This couple had a daughter Cordelia, son Edward, daughters Ellen & Isabella, son James Silvester, daughter Mary Ellen.

A search in Wikipedia for 'HMS Superb 1842' on which Silvester (son of Matthew & Ellen) served should give info on the ship and an early photograph taken on board (not of Silvester unfortunately). www.pbenyon.plus.com and www.pdavis.nl can be searched to find details of most of the ships listed on Silvester's Service Record. The Morrison family apparently lived in Collingwood Rd, Portsmouth and photographs of this road are apparently available. A son of Silvester & Ellen, James Silvester, died 23 Dec 1881 at 35 Collingwood Rd, Portsea but unfortunately No.35 has apparently been demolished to make way for new flats. Silvester and Ellen died at 27 Brompton Road.
Some information re Re Silvester's family can be found in Coastguard Index & that information has been taken from Census records - 1871 & 1881 for Silvester and 1851 for Matthew.

If anyone interested in the Hugh Pill thread has an interest too in the other coastguard men of this area of southern England and/or has come across info on the Morrissey/Morrison family that could assist me further with my research, I would be most grateful.

Regards sdmcd

One of the brothers went to CanADA and changed his name to Fraser !!!!! He told me in a letter years ago that it was well that he he changed it. His daughter became a doctor and would have been Dr Pill. He said he was bullied about his name but one of his other brothers said he changed it under pressure from his wife..
Thanks for the message. You are really in the right naval place. Prest man is how it was written in the Victory's log
We would say he had been press-ganged into the navy. Dont know any more about John or where he came from apart from Cornwall. All the Pill family in Gorran and Mevagissey were sailors and revenue men, probably becoming revenue men after service in the navy. Hugh was one of the first of the modern Coastguard Service. I would love to know where he had been before he became a coastguard. I am away from my records down here in the warm living room. I will have to venture up to my attic and dig out what i have got. Many of your names ate familiar to me but some I dont know. Where did you get them. If Jane Rippen was Hughs mother she would have bee almost 60 when he was born. Ebven so I believe she was his mother. I have the parish records for Gorran and they make interesting but confusing reading. If you could give me your e-mail I could send information straight through to you by-passing this small message box. My e=mail is apbinns@hotmail.co.uk. You and I could be blood relatives if we are not careful. My only Pill relative down there is the widow of ? Pill she is called Joy Pill and is elderly and ill. I have never met her. She lives in Elson Gosport. in Hampshire. Her husband was the youngest of three Pill brothers who were definitely descendants from Hugh. They are now all dead. I will now go upstairs and unearth my Pill archives Alan Penrose Binns.

Hi sorry just read the next bit!! I am 42 and live in Havant just outside of Portsmouth (where HMS Victory is based!) - what is a Prest man? - I've gone further back - Hughs parents John Pill (1734) and Jane Rippen (1738) - Father John Pill (1706) and Frances Prout (c.1710), Henry Pill (1682) and Grace?, John Pill(c.1654) and Margery Tresugyan/Stoaden (c1658) and on the Rippen side -
Father Ephraim Rippen (1689) and Joan Dowrick(1692), Father John Rippen (1660) and Margaret Ollaver (c.1660),Do these match with what you have found?
Hi, yes definately related Hugh Pill has fascinated me for ages - why was Benjamin born in Lowestoft - was he based there? I know he served on the Isle of Wight (I was in school there and live very close!)
Going from me:- my Nan Joan Fielder (mum Elizabeth Montague and Dad George Fielder (born 1892) - Father George R Fielder (born 1862) Mother Elizabeth Pill (b. 1865) Father Walter Pill (1836) Mother Elizabeth Griffiths (b. 1838) Father of Walter = Hugh!!!
It just amazes me when I see old photographs of coastguards and to be based around Sennen and Lands End - I just wish my Mum was still alive she would have loved this considering she didnt even know who her dad was and so started me looking into the family tree!!! If you have any other info would love to hear from you. jo

Cannot spend time on this yet but have no knowlege of margery Tresuygen. I do know Stoaden. I promise to liook things up soon when it gets warmer in my freezing attic where the recordsarekept
Hugh Pill was born in Gorran in 1789 There is a doubt about his parentage as his mother might have been well iontpo her 40s if she is the right woman. but my mum was 40 when i was born and her mum was 40 when she was born so the 40s dont seem to ber a proble,m Hugh is my gt gt grandfather
He was at Bembridge Isle of White in about 1816 then in Lowestoft in 1822 before transfer to Sennen Cove where he served until he retired He married Sarah St Andrew . Family tradition says her father was a mariner , St Andrew of Brittany. We have no proof of this but I was really thrilled when I found the records at Boldre in the New Forest. Another tradition is that Hugh was at Trafalgar. I have not proved this. I do know that there was a John Pill an Able Seaman on HMS Victory.I have seen the Trafalgar muster at Kew,. He lived long enough to claim a Trafalgar medal in the 1840s. He was listed as a prest man and a Cornishman.

Who are you and where do you live. I am 77 years old and live in Burnley Lancashire UK. My mother was Margaret Ethel Pill Her mother was Nanny Penrose from St Just in Penwith. My grandfather was Benjamin William Pill as also was my Gt Grandfather . My middle name is Penrose!!!!

Hi, my Hugh Pill had a very large family - so there are quite a few of them around - I have found on the 1841 census that the other coastguards listed at Sennen Cove were Charles Poynter 40 Navy Half Pay, William Mean 30 Coastguard, Richard Forward 35 Coastguard, Anthony Spiller 35 Coastguard and William Moyle 55 Coastguard - they all lived in the Coastguard cottages in Sennen - there are quite a few coastguard sites that list the men so maybe you might have a bit better luck there. (e.g www. morrab.tripod.com) let me know how you get on and I will see if I can find anything out for you also.

Hi there, Just interested in the fact that your ancestor Hugh Pill seems to have been a Coastguard at Sennen Cove. Our ancestor, Matthew Morrissey/Morrison/Morrisson was also a Coastguard at Sennen Cove so I am always interested in any information people might have about the Coastguard in general in the south of England and Sennen Cove in particular.

Cheers

Hello there. I have only just found your message in Ancestry today that you had posted back on 4th April 2008. We actually left that day on holidays and were away a few weeks. Our family are also direct descendants of John and Esther Morrisson (nee Dunn) and would love to hear from you further on this topic and in regard to these people.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

smcd
Maroochydore
