Does anyone remember the Tresillian which sunk off Cork in November 1954, does anyone know where the crew that were not saved would have been washed up. Would it have been the Devon or Cornwall area, any information appreciated.
Thank you

Hi,
Was this the grain ship ms Tresillian which sank on 30th November 1954? If it was my father headed the rescue of survivers from the m.s. Liparus. I think they managed to save about 30 people before she went down.
Unfortunately I can't help you with what happened to those that died as my father is no longer with us.
However you could try asking Shell Tankers UK as the ms Liparus was a Shell ship.
I'll try and see if there are any press clippings at my mothers.
Cheers,
Jerry.

Hi,
My dad, Thomas Erskine was a member of the lifeboat crew who saved many of the Tresillian crew. He is still alive, and I have recently been researching his bravery because he has never really told me much about it, and found the entry in the London Gazette. Are you the son of Charles Stanley Owston by any chance ?
Would love to chat and my dad will obviously know more
please email me
Regards
Steve Erskine

Dear Steve, Thank you for your message, I am the sister of Clyde Webb who was lost on the Tresillian. His body was never found as far as I know, I've been told that some of the crew were washed up on the west coast of England or maybe Wales but I haven't been able to find out where. I will certainly investigate the London Gazette. Regards Frances Sherbourne

Steve,
Sorry for thedelay in replying, I have just been prompted to the post I made some time ago by another contactee.
In answer to your question, Yes my father was Charles Stanley Owston (more commonly refered to as "Stan". I gather that your father was in the same boat with my father that night.
From what I know of the event (my father didn't talk about it much either) there was almost a mutiny on the Liparus as the captain didn't want to go to the Tresillian's rescue.
Good to hear from you - I must try and find those press clippings
Regards,
Jerry owston.

Hi Frances, Hope this thread is still live. We have just started researching the Tresillian at the request of a local cemetery warden. He has 3 unknowns in the graveyard, bodies apparently washed up on the North Devon Coast in early December 1954. Did you make any head way regarding your Brother's body?? There are lots of newspaper reports but none we can find in local archives as of yet.
