Dan Shelby ( Daniel J Macher), actor, clown, circus and theater owner

I am doing research on Dan Shelby, born Daniel James Macher, son of James Daniel Macher and Elizabeth McClean. Born in Maryland Jan 11, 1838 in Pa. Moved with family when he was less than 1 year old to Dayton Ohio. His father opened the first shoe store in Dayton, complete with carpet (very fancy for those times). His father died shortly afterwards and when Dan was 10 he was working on neighboring farms earning $2 a month. At the age of 14 he joined Sam Wells Minstrels. He owned Shelby's Golden Circus as well as many others. He was married to Nellie Hatfield Pennock who went by her stage name of Helen Rainsley. After Dan's death Nellie changed her name to Helen and married a man named Merwin.. they moved to Ca. Dan and Nellie had 2 children, Medinah Temple Shelby and Daniel Shelby, Jr. Medinah's name was changed to Jean and she married a Gallagher. I am not sure what happened to Daniel Jr..
Hello, I'm French. my family has worked for gleich circus. I just found old photos of my family at the circus. I also think that my great mother Julie Schauerjans was the family of the woman's gleich julius. On fact the mother of my great mother ( julie schauerjans) is Marguerite winterstein and the mother of karola gleich is Rosalie winterstein. I have circus gleich's photos and documents. If you are interested i can send you copy. Do you know something about winterstein' s family? Thank you in advance. My mail is: cassagne.laura@hotmail.fr

Re: Pablo Fanque

I researched and wrote most of the "Pablo Fanque" Wikipedia entry. It's been a while since I've researched him. Recently, I've read some posts on the Internet suggesting that Pablo Fanque's nephew, Billy Banham (who later emigrated to Australia and performed the remainder of his life under his uncle's name) may have been Pablo's son. I'm not sure I buy that. But I believe he did perform with his famous uncle in Britain, and may have been billed as young Pablo or infant Pablo. It's conceivable that Fanque would have billed his nephew as a "mini-me;" he too was likely African, and conspicuously resemble Pablo. I hope to do more research into Pablo Fanque's children and Billy Banham. Please stay in touch. I'm happy to answer others' inquiries about Pablo Fanque as well. I hope to do research in Manchester soon.

I am looking for Birth info for Winifred Clements, born 1905, not sure where but possibly London area. I believe that her Mother was unmarried and also called Clements (don't know Christian Name) and that her Father was a Circus Strongman/performer who abandoned them. I think they may have spent time in a Nuns College. First record I have is her Marriage in 1923 to Reginald Fish which gives her Address as 133 Battersea Rise, Battersea. Her Father is not named on this. I believe her Mother died in 1922/23 from Cancer. I can't find her on 1911 Census

My grandmother's 1st cousin was an acrobat for the circus. She married Doc Nathaniel Stallard who also worked for the circus. His WWI Draft Registration card was filled out 5 Jun 1917 in Addington, Scott, VA and on that he indicated that he was a musician with the Hagenbeck-Wallace show. I have no dates for her time spent with the circus nor her marriage to Doc. Since he worked for the circus in 1917 and is in the 1920 census I can only assume that he survived the wreck.

I'm looking for further information about the Hayden and LaLonde circus team.

They consisted of husband wife team William W Hayden and Eliana M LaLonde.

They worked in the early 1900's to about 1925 or so.

Eliana's brother, Telles LaLonde was also a acrobat and performed with the Coop and Lent Circus around 1918-1920.

Eliana's sister (Rachel LaLonde) was married to a Hazen A. Johnson who was listed as a "showman" in the 1910 census leading me to believe the entire family was somehow all connected in the circus industry. (Rachel also was married to an St. Arnold, Archambault, Sternal and finally a Gicker).

I'm just looking for any further information on them, pictures, info, etc.

Eliana's obit mentioned she was a performer with Ringling Bros. She died in 1964 in Utah. William Hayden died 1930 in Minnesota.

They lived in Duluth, Minnesota for some period of time. As did Telles and Rachel. Telles and Rachel ended up in Florida with Eliana in Utah at the time of her death.

Claude Gerald Hartley

I have a cousin, Claude Gerald Hartley (b 12 Jun 1894 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa), who worked for the Flack North Western Carnival Show in May 1917 (where it was in Detroit, Michigan), as indicated in his WWI draft card. I'm not sure how long he worked for them, or even what he did. He said that he was transient, in the sense that he had no permanent home besides the circus wherever it was. I find him again in the 1942 WW2 Old Man's draft and he appeared to still be in the business, this time not naming the show but his employer, Lawrence T. Levy, 5713 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, Ohio. Further research has revealed that Levy was Lawrence Thorsch Levy (1898-1960), a sales manager for a chemical/drug supply company. Not sure what Claude did for him, maybe be a bodyguard, or go-to guy, or ???

Claude was not married in either draft cards, but he may or may not have married at some point. I can't find him in any of the censuses after 1910, when he lived with his mother, Mina "Minnie" (Mitchell) Hartley Dullaghan Tourville. I have no idea where he died. His mother disappeared from any record I can find after 1910 [NOTE: she died in 1910], and his father, Edgar Otho Hartley, had remarried and moved to Minnesota (dying in 1918). He had one full brother who died in 1913, and I'm not sure what his relationship was with his half-siblings through his father.

Any info on Claude Gerald Hartley would be great. He died sometime after 27 Apr 1942 (date of old man's draft card), perhaps many decades later.

Tybell Family

I am looking on any info on the Tybell family.

My Grandfather John Tybell 1890(abt)-1953 was a circus performer in Australia. Apparently he was an American, but I can't confirm if his surname was actually Tybell or he just took the name on for his showbiz act.

The earliest I have seen the name Tybell mention performing in Australia is in 1907 as a trapeze act. From what I can make out, there was a male and female performer in the act. The male performer is known as the Iron-jaw marvel, due to performing while suspended by the mouth. I assume that this is my grandfather. He performed in various circus acts until 1931 when joined the railway in the Northern Territory, Australia.

I can't find any record of his birth or arrival in Australia, so the information of him being from America may be correct.

I have seen mention of the Tybell name in American circus acts, so I wonder if there is a connection. One that looks promising may be Julian Tybell:

Name: Julian Tybell
Birth Date: 1867
Birth Place: Chicago, Illinois
Death Date: 4 Apr 1938
Death Place: Bremen, Cook Co , Illinois
Burial Date: 6 Apr 1938
Burial Place: Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois
Cemetery Name: Cedar Park
Death Age: 66
Occupation: Circus work
Race: White
Marital Status: M
Gender: Male
Street Address: 10806 So. Western Ave.
Residence: Chicago, Cook Co., Illilnois
Spouse Name: May
FHL Film Number: 1818556

He would be about the right age to be John Tybell's father. But I'm only clutching at straws here.

Hi Phil, can you tell me exactly where your grandfather's circus performed in Santa Ana CA? I was at a family reunion & the circus came up & when it came to town, back in the 30's (before my time). My cousin seemed to think it was close to where my parents lived so I'm doing research for my Dad, but I can't seem to find the exact location where they set it up. Do you by chance know, and is there a website that shows pictures or newspaper articles. I would love to share it with my 89 yr old dad as he can't remember now. Thanks so much,

kelly. I have become very interested in the lives of edgar and his wife juanita sonnanstine. Ellie lee. Was great friends with them both, from her words, A beautiful life of circus, movies. And most of all, love. I have pictures of all of them. The time with his brothers, and the times with his most famous wife, juanita. Sonny was his name, acribats was what he did, from what l can see, he loved life, and all people. The color of there skin didnt matter to him, back then, it mattered to a whole lot of people. One picture l have, shows sonny, with his arms wrapped around children of color, the smile on his face, and the old fashion hats and cloths, makes this picture, 5 x 7, great!!! I know l have your grandfathers, l have many, including with chistiani circus, with the elephants, post cards, just plain life from the circus. I am a writer, and the life they lived, seems sad, to just let die. So, l will start here, ln hopes, someone might feel the same way, add to the story. appreciate any remarks, carla

I know it has been a long time since this thread was posted but I thought I would just send a message.

I've been a tattooer for 10 years and have done some special research on women tattooers. Maude, Gus' wife is considered the First female tattoo artist in the United States.

If you are still looking for information on Gus try Chuck Edlridge -- he is the tattoo community's foremost historian and I know the large museum and archive he has will have more information on Gus. http://www.tattooarchive.com/ link here.

Madame Chinchilla also wrote the book "Electric Tattooing by Men" and I'm sure there is info about Gus in there as well. http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Tattooing-1900-2004-Madame-Ch... -- link to the book.

Also I know that the last tattoo that their daughter Lotteva did was on Tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy before she died in 1983. He knew her and it's possible he knew Gus, but I'm sure he knew OF Gus. I would also check with Lyle Tuttle - - it is quite likely that Lyle knew Gus. Lyle is considered by some to be the grandfather of the modern tattoo movement and as an Old School tattooer from the 40's, I'm sure he would know of Gus or know people who did know him -- these guys are getting up in age so don't wait to contact them :)

Your family is a very important part of US Tattoo History!

I am currently curating a small art show with a history retrospective on Women Tattoo Artists and Maude and Lotteva will be featured. That is how I found you.

Jacqueline
Black Iris Studio
www.blackirisstudio.com

Hi Gordon,
Well, through MUCH searching, and looking 'outside the box' I finally found something big!! I now have proof that Joseph Jee Sr DID die in about 1856. Jane Jee remarried, but not to William Deacon. His name is JOHN Deacon. They had a daughter, Susannah, in 1858, the same year Lily Deacon was born. I'm sure Lily must have been her taken stage name.
Check out the 1861 England Census for Susannah Deacon. This has got to be Lily! She didn't marry into the Deacon family. She was born into it. You'll find her, 2 years old, with her parents, John and Jane, and ALL SEVEN Jee kids ... but on the record their last name looks like "Tees" so that's how it would come up in the Ancestry search - NOT Jee. This is positively them!!
There's also a Marriage record for Jane Jee and John Deacon, dated Dec 8, 1858. She must have had something about the day Dec 8th. She married Jos Jee on Dec 8, 1836. Creepy if you ask me.
Hi Gordon,
thanks for this post. I am in the Jee direct line. I live in the US. I've come to the same conclusions you have in your last paragraph about the origins of Joseph Sr and Jane Mozley, since I have exhausted myself trying to find a single census with them on it, or birth records, etc. I have also wondered how the Bonfanti name fits in. What a tangled mess of a family with all the stage names and real names and changed names, etc!!
I'll throw another wrench in it, and see what you think, or if anyone else has any ideas?? My mom has always told my sisters and me (our whole lives) that she was 1/32 Cherokee Indian from her Dad's side of the family (the Jee side). Where it played in, I have NO idea, because since I started running the line out I have found no evidence of it.
I recently started a Facebook family page for the living members of my family tree that I've discovered through Ancestry. Have met some new 2nd cousins in the UK, descendants of Egbert Burnell Jee, who said they were also told this same thing about the Cherokee heritage. One of them said he had heard that Cherokees would often shorten the tribal name to KEE to use as a last name, and that the letters K and J are interchangeable in their language, so that may be how the name JEE came about in our family. It's a long shot, I know, but I'm wondering if there could be something to it.
How in the world would you suggest I research this one?? If you have ANY ideas, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, TJ

hey bill,
are you on Facebook? I've started a "MyJeeTree" SECRET group page on Facebook to allow any of the living members in my mom's side of the tree to meet if they want and chat about the family lineage, share info, etc. Many people aren't on Ancestry, but I think have tons of info they could share, and also might get really interested in this once they started seeing how cool it is.
The group is secret, like I said. No one can see it, see any of the members, or any posts that are on it unless they are a member of the page. I can invite you to the page if you are on Facebook and are my 'friend.' after that, you can invite more family. this will be strictly for people coming down from the Jee side of the tree. if you're on Facebook, send me an email with your facebook user name, and I'll send you a 'friend' invite. thanks, Tammy

The Jees are vary distantly connected to me by marriage. The best source of info on the circus families i have found is "Victorian Arena-the Performers by the late John Turner.Briefly he gives Amelia Jee probably the daughter of Henry Bonfanti (Jee) sister of Belvina, Virginia and James Jee. She performed as Amelia Bonfanti
Belvina Jee, Equestrian, married George Hugh Holloway 1892. Charles Jee Equestrian pos brother of James Henry Jee. Frederick Burnell Jee acrobat second son of Joseph Jee who married Miss Burnell, brother of Joe Harry and Bert performed as the Burnells.Poss a daughter Charleen. Harry Jee musical clown. James Henry Jee married Ellen Bowden 1865 had daughter Virginia and son James.Lilly Jee poss married into the Deacon Family ;performed as Lilly Deacon.
Marie Jee equestrienne. William Jee brother of JOseph died 18th Jan 1885. The trouble as you realise is that they did not originate in the UK they seem to have arrived from Germany but the Name Belfonti suggests Italy but the german boundary at the time would have included part of the current Italy. I haven't traced them on any Census, which could indicate they were performing abroad at the time. Hope this provides clues that could lead to more concrete info.
Gordon

Hello Ryan,
My grandfather was Laurence Joseph Jee (son of Joseph Jee and Polly Viner). I believe my uncle has responded to his son, Steven, in the previous posts, and they have since been reunited as a result. This is a truly amazing thing - Ancestry.com. We are all discovering just how small the world is.
You are correct that, as a Jee, you are connected to the Forepaughs. Lily Deacon (daughter of Jane Mozley/Wm Deacon, 1958) married Adam Forepaugh, Jr. Lily is the half-sister of Jennie Maud Jee, Joseph, Harry, and Joseph, to name a few of them. That's actually a place I'm stuck at the moment. Every tree I have viewed has a Joseph Jee (1819-1899) as Jane Mozley's husband, married in 1836. I do NOT believe he is the correct Jos Jee. I cannot find a single census with him and any of the kids or Jane M on it. I think it is a different Jos Jee, but I have not quite figured it out yet.
I have run the Jee family line out pretty far, and continue to work on it. My mom is very interested in it! I would be very happy to share information with you, since I'm sure you can also help me. I live in the US. Let me know if you'd like to connect on this.
Thanks, Tammy
They are an interesting family.

I agree you probably have the wrong Joseph Jee. I see from your tree that this Joseph died in 1899. But I think that your Joseph must have died in the mid 1850s. That would allow his wife Jane to marry William Deacon prior to Lily's birth in 1858. Divorce was uncommon in 19th century England.

Good luck in your research!!

Bill
hi bill, I sent you an invite. feel free to use any info you need. I'm still trying to piece together the Jane Mozley Deacon situation. I think I (and every other public tree I've seen) has the wrong Joseph Jee! The one in my tree (and all others) is an Army VC recipient and surgeon that gives NO references to any family members in any documents, including his obit, that I have read about him. There are other Jos Jees on there. I think it's a matter of finding the right one. I just don't think this one is the right guy. needs some really deep digging!

Bill,
thanks so much for the article. I think this will solve the mystery. I've been looking at the wrong parent! the story coming down the family line is evidently flawed. Jane Mozley must NOT have died - she and Jos Jee simply may have split. That explains it. Now I can start the search over with this new information, and I'm sure everything will fall right into place! Amazing how a single piece of information changes the story of a family history!
I will resend you an invite to my Jee tree if you wish. My mom is supposed to be sending me photos, so I hope to have those soon.

Best,
Tammy

Hello Tammy,

It's good to hear from you.

I really know almost nothing of Lily's family background in England. Since she is not in my direct family line (Adam Forepaugh Jr is my 1st cousin, three times removed) I really didn't spend much time in researching her background.

I do know that Lily was a very prominent equestrienne in England for at least five years prior to her emigration to the USA in 1882. So I would doubt that she accompanied the Jee family to the USA in 1871.

If Lily D.and Jennie J. had the same father why did they have different last names? Maybe Deacon is just a professional name?

Please review Lily Deacon Forepaugh's memorial in Findagrave.com. Her photograph does suggest she may have Indian features. I created her bio using parental informatio that I found in Lily's obituary from her local newspaper. I'm sure this will be of interest to you. It can be viewed at:

http://fultonhistory.com/newspaper%2010/Carmel%20NY%20Putnam...

I can transfer "management" for this Findagrave memorial to you if you would like.

Regards,

Bill Ridge

Hi Bill,
I'm getting a lot filled in on my mom's side about all the Jee circus performers. From a small bio on the JEE family performers in the Circushistory.org under the People section, it stated that they all came over to the US in 1871. I found ships passage record to confirm that. not sure if Lily went home and then back again in '82, but I didn't find that.
I came on here to ask THIS if anyone knows or can help me find the answer. I have dug and dug and can't come up with it. The short bio piece states that Lily is the "half-sister" of Jennie Maud. My mom backs that up, telling me she has always been told the story that the father (Jos Jee 1819) remarried after Jane Mozley apparently died young, and that the woman was of Indian heritage. I have found what I think could be accurate death and burial records for Jane Mozley in 1846. I cannot find the info on the second wife (Lily's mom), though. With Jennie Maud being born in 1843 and Lily in 1858, the "half-sister" would fit the time line of J.M.'s death.
If anyone can help with this info, I will be grateful.
Thanks, Tammy J.

I heard some time ago that she was involved in a zoo in BRisbane.
My grandmother was Juanita La Coma Zimmerman. Her parents were Pearl Clark La Coma and Christopher La Coma. In my uncle (Raymond Leon Zimmerman) baby book, my grandmother wrote her father's last name as Bonhenstaffen. They came from Germany. I cannot find any name even close to this. I would love to know his real name. I do know from my aunt that they came from Germany on a boat. Don't know the boat name. -- I am a writer, and I'm trying to do some research for a book. I have some stories written about the circus by my grandmother, but I don't have much else.
--- Charmain Zimmerman Brackett
