Hi George,
I am Violets grandaughter Tracy and have been popping into ancestory.com as I have an interest in the family tree also. I think your research is far greater than mine but its great for me to get wee snippets here and there.
I noticed in your email that you talked about Violet marrying Fred Bastable. Was there another Violet as my gran married Donald Alexander and I have never been aware of another Violet. My gran who is now 92 is still as fiesty as ever and is on a dog poo crusade at the moment, neighbours dog/owners leaving it all over her drying area. You can't keep a good woman down and she is determind to sort it out!
I haven't heard anything back from Anne as yet. I think she would like to meet my gran.
I hope your research is going well and if there is anything I can do re my gran please let me know.
Regards
Tracy

Hello George
And thanks for the background. Funny how the past seems more interesting when one has been around a lot of years. I still haven't managed the records office trip re the school to follow up.. its been put off for a couple of weeks.. though did find Walpole shool building and take a photo. It's being renovated and the builder let us mooch around.
In your fact file... have you any info about Blanch Harris's (nee Scott)older sisters. Mary was born 1874, Lily 1879. I know Lily then became a Simpson, and at some point went to South Africa. There's a lot about her family in Amelia (the next sister's) son's letter from S. Africa to my mother (his cousin)in the war. It was his last stop off before the ship went down, and he was lost. The Barham was hit by German torpedoes. I have no idea what happened to the family after that, though have a vague memory of one branch visiting us in London when I was small. I wonder who was the Simpson Lily married... and if he was from a showman background. Mary disappears off my radar after the census of 1891 when the whole family were in Woolpit, recorded as travelling show folk. I have found one possible record that might be her in service at the time of the next census but it's all ifs and buts. She would have been 22 by then. It's hard to find women when they marry and change their names. She is the only one of my grandmother Florence's siblings who has completely disappeared!
Second question. Blanch's grandfather/grandmother..James Edward and Susanna (Peterson). Do you know the names of his parents. My understanding is that originally the family came from Scotland.
Am hoping to sat hello to Violet!
Anne

Hi Anne
My great grandmother was Elizabeth Scott, known as Lily.
Lily and William's daughter Agnes Simpson married Edwin Slaughter (son of James Tawse-Slaughter & Sarah Hay Suttie).
Are you still building on the family tree ?...............let me know and I can try source more info on Lily.
I am particularly interested in the contents of the letter you mention.
Karen

Hello Karen
What a lovely surprise. I have been tinkering away at the family tree for some time now....and trying to put together some of the old circus information. I 'lost' Lily. I have her details on ship to S Africa...and all the info from Sid's letter when he visited the cousins, and a few photos...but no marriage details..or anything much else. Lily's youngest sister Blanch died in childbirth in 1926. Her oldest daughter Violet is still alive in Scotland...and her sister May is still very sprightly in W Australia. She remembers Lily's daughter Mary well, as she and her husband,? first husband' stayed with her in England. She sent me 2 photos of Mary ...taken at her wedding I believe....and was sad to then have lost touch with her. She would be very excited to have some news about the family I know.
One question I have unanswered is whether Lily married into another circus/showman family or not. I had always thought that all William and Mary Sarah's 6 children had left the 'show' circuit...and then when I recently traced the eldest sister Mary's(Polly) marriage found she had married David Chapman from a well known fairground family.
I have sent you an invitation to read the tree as far as I have been able to get with it so far. Any ideas or information would be much appreciated. I have met descendants from William Henry's, Amelia, and Blanch's line....and was hoping that one day I might manage to do the same for Lily and Pollys' families. That would be good.
Anne Stevens....grand daughter of Florence Scott, Lily's sister.

I am still figuring out if my family fits in this one or not. I've just started, but my greatgrandad in Lancashire was listed as showman in his marriage in 1919 (to Margaret Pennington Sixsmith), and his dad who was also John Scott from the late 1800s was listed on that marriage document as father of the groom, and circus proprietor.
I am hoping to touch base with Ann Barber or someone who has pics of the circus etc. I am eager to delve more into my family tree on that branch this week.

That's interesting. Sounds as if there is a fit somewhere, around the John Scott circus proprietor. Would it help to have a look at where I have got to now? I will send you an invite to look at my tree to date.
Anne
