Looking for information on William Scott (born 1846), alleged to be brother of Walter Scott equestrian and circus owner. Walter married Rebecca Freeman and his daughter Elizabeth married Edwin Hannaford and took the Scotts circus to America. Also looking for information on the court case between the Scott family and the Hannafords in the early 1900's over the ownership of the circus. I have seen the Hannaford web site and EMailed them but they were unable to give me any details other than those already on the site. I am interested in any information on the Scotts circus.

Hi, in a book I have it lists the Hanneford Riding Troupe, headed by the great equestrian clown, Edwin (Poodles) Hanneford (there are pictures) came to this country from England in 1915 and members of it have been riding ever since. The Hanneford troupe was with the Big One (Ringling, Barnum, Baily) for fifteen seasons and starred in several other shows. (picture of family and horses) Percy Clarke, Grace (Mrs. Poodles)Hanneford, Poodles, his mother Nana, his sister, Elizabeth Hanneford Clarke and her husband, Ernest Clarke. this photo was taken in 1931. The book is called A Pictorial History of the American Circus by John and Alice Durant. This is all I have found in MY things. My family was the Howes Circus befor 1880, I have found the Circus World Museum to be of great help. Also if you can get a hold of the micro film for the NY Clipper, you might be able to get more info. Hope this helped a little.

Thanks Colette. Unfortunately there seems to be little on my William and his father James but loads on Walter, Elizabeth and all the others. It is almost like he has been wiped out. I need to know why no-one ever mentions them. I know William performed in the circus so there must be something somewhere. Perhaps someone out there has the missing clue.

Hi Deirdre. I have 700+ people on my tree linking into all the famous circus families. However I do not have your particular link in. The only link (as yet) between the Davies family and the Scotts is Pricilla Rose Scott who married John Davies. She was the daughter of John Henry Scott who in turn was the son of the famous Walter Scott whose daughter married into the Hannafords. We are having extreme difficulty in finding all the siblings of Walter and your Elizabeth may have been his sister. I have only one Elizabeth at present that I have been unable to find descendants for and she is my great aunt. However I think she is too young to be the one you are looking for. Sorry I could not be more help. I will keep a note of your message and if I come upon anything I will let you know.

Deirdre I have found your Zepha Scott. She is on the 1881 Census travelling with John Scott, his family and mother (Elizabeth) and her husband Robert Davies and their children (Emma, Robert, William H, Rosanna, Lily and Alfred). They were at Toxteth Park, Lancashire. John and Elizabeth are the siblings of my great grandfather William and John was the owner of the Royal Scott's circus. If you EMail me on vimpug@aol.com I will give you their ages and places of birth and any other information you would like. I am in contact with a descendant of John Scott and we have photos of his circus. I am sorry I did not know immediately but I was concentrating in the Scott name and did not look at my census neighbour sheets until today. We were not aware that Zepha was a Scott until now. Ann
