Watt family of Mariners, Glasgow Scotland.
I am searching for any history on the following members of the Watt family: Capt. James Watt, was born in Kincardine, Fife 7 Dec 1804 and married Helen Landers in Tulliallan, Perth 11 Apr 1878. It has been mentioned that he was a Glasgow Harbour Master, I have not been able to verify this. Three of his sons also are named as being ships captains they are: Capt. William Watt who was at one time Master of the Steamer 'Cheviot'. He was born in Tulliallan 27 June 1827 no further details are known. Capt John Landers Watt born North Leith, Midlothian 26 Feb 1836, married Margaret Whitelaw in Kelvitt, Glasgow 16 Mar 1875. He and his wife died in the wreck of the brigantine 'Akbar' at Timaru, New Zealand 29 June 1879. Capt Ebenezer Watson Watt born North Leith, Midlothian Jun 1838, married Mary Ann Denny in Dumbarton, Dunbarton 23 Apr 1867. Capt. Ebenezer Watt is reported to have died at sea 11 Aug 1877 (noted on his fathers tombstone in Geelong cemetery, Geelong, Victoria, Australia) No other details noted. I would be most grateful if anybody can help fill in the details of the family, including names of ships which were captained by the above (especially for Ebenezer), deaths of Helen Landers (Capt. James Watt remarried in 16 Nov 1845 to Isabella Jeans and emigrated to Australia in 1853) and possible re-marriage of Mary Ann Denny. Thank you for any assistance. Geoff

Re: Watt family of Mariners, Glasgow Scotland.
I have an Alexander Watt b.1824 who married Mary McKenzie. On the daughters (Catherine Stewart Watt) death certificate it states that her father was a Master Mariner. Alexander was married in Peterhead Scotland in 1849. Do you know of any connection to Alexander?

Re: Watt family of Mariners, Glasgow Scotland.
Graeme
Thank you for your query.
I do have an Alexander born 8 Nov 1817 in Tulliallan Perth. His parents were James WATT and Elizabeth WYND who were married in Tulliallan. Their son Captain James WATT was a Mariner and it is quite possible that Alexander could have been a mariner also. I have no knowledge at this time if James WATT senior was also connected with the sea. The main two trades in Tulliallan were mining and fishing. At this point in time I have no knowledge of Alexander marrying at least not in Tulliallan. I hope this helps you further in your research, if this is your Alexander it would certainly add to mine.
Good luck
Geoff

Unfortunately Geoff my Alexander was born 1824 to William Watt and Mary Mearns. He married Mary MacKenzie 1849 and moved to Australia in 1853

Re: Watt family of Mariners, Glasgow Scotland.
Hi Geoff, I think we're probably distantly related; I'm descended from Margaret Watt b 16/12/1810 Tulliallan and m. John Ogilvie, another shipping family from the area. Their daughter Margaret Watt Ogilvie married my ship's master/owner ggggrandfather John Henderson, also of Tulliallan. One way I've tracked John Henderson's travels is through Google Books - using Advanced Search and say the years 1820-1845 - and it throws up a lot of the Far East Journals that contain all the shipping travel to and from Asia. V. interesting. Cheers, Kate

Re: Watt family of Mariners, Glasgow Scotland.
Hi Kate
I am in the midst of tracing my family and I am also descended from Margaret Watt b 16/12/1810 Tulliallan and John Ogilvie, via their son, also John Ogilvie (1846-1921). He was a Master Mariner and his wife Elizabeth Henderson married and later died here in Australia.
I am interested in any details you can provide me of the Margaret Watt Ogilvie and her marriage to your ship's master/owner grandfather John Henderson, also of Tulliallan. Margaret and Watt are names which carry through the generations of my own tree, right to my own!
Look forward to any further communications,
Jane (Margaret) Gow, Armidale, NSW.
