NEWARK: A funeral service for Karl Roberts Darnes, age 88, of Newark, Ohio will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 13, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Darnes passed away on Monday, April 9, 2012 at his home. He was born August 3, 1923 in Newark, Ohio to the late Stanley A. and Mary (Roberts) Darnes.
Mr. Darnes was a graduate of Newark High School.
He served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a C-46 pilot and retired from the Air Force in 1983.
A welder for a number of years at the Pure Oil Refinery, Mr. Darnes retired from the Owens Corning Tech. Center in Granville, Ohio.
He continued metal repair work and restoration repair following his retirement.
He enjoyed restoring old cars, especially classic Thunderbirds.
He was a member of the Hump Pilots Association and enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels in his later years.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anita and John Skinner of New Albany, Ohio; granddaughter, Emma Skinner of New Albany; brother, Gale Darnes of Newark, Ohio; sister, Mona Raflik of Dayton, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Charline Darnes, on January 29, 2010; and by two brothers, Warren Darnes and Kenneth Darnes.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, and from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, April 13, at the funeral home, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark, Ohio.
