Helen D. Karas, 86, of Poulsbo died Monday in Poulsbo.

She was born in Sedro-Woolley to Frank and Beulah (Bouck) Karas. She attended Hollywood High School. She went on to attend Los Angeles City College, San Diego State, University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Santa Barbara where she earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary credential in education/speech correction. She served as a policewoman and detective for the Seattle Police Department from 1951 to 1976 when she retired. She was also a counselor for King County Juvenille Court, a parole officer, an assistant superintendent for Santa Barbara County Juvenille Hall, a probation officer and a welder and shipfitter at Richmond Shipyard.

She is survived by many cousins and friends.

Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Vinland Lutheran Church. Burial: 2 p.m. at Kane Cemetery. Arrangements: Lewis Funeral Chapel. Donations: Martha and Mary, the American Heart Association or Vinland Lutheran Church. Online memorial: www.lewischapel.com.
