If so, what happens when you put the name in the 'search archive' box? Are you using the 'Advanced search' option?

I am trying to trace a relative through the London Gazzett who passed away in 1996 unfortunately with little success.

Whilst the London Gazzett has all sorts of features I don't seem to have any success.

If any one has incurred a similar problem I would be please to find out the solution on how to use the site.

Online papers are at the British Library Site http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ or mirrored at Findmypast which you may have access to at your local library.

Southwark is in Surrey and the archives and Libraries for the county can be found on the Surrey GENUKI page http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/SRY/index.php - you could see their holdings and email for a lookup as you have the date

1941 Suicide Inquest

A relation on my tree sadly committed suicide in Southwark in 1941. The death certificate showed an inquest was held on 4th July 1941. Is there anyway of getting more information from the newspapers of the time ??

Appreciate any help on where I would start.

I'd love to see a copy of John's last letter. Could you email it to me at northmedia@talktalk.net ? Would your uncle know of the story my grandmother Hewitt used to tell about John Hewitt taking the blame for the murder, when it was his own father who killed Masfen?

I have a copy of an article from a magazine about a walking stick that has been carved with scenes from the Hewitt/Masfen story, with a photo of the stick. I can email you a copy of this if you haven't seen it.

Some may already know, but for those who don't have a look at the site, i have found several references in my tree, Preacher (no genes here lol), Petty Sessions (no Suprise :)), liquidation, and a few others,
Possibility u find nothing. it is payable to view and download, but pretty cheap especially if u spend time making best of time.

Hi, does anyone have an unlimited subscription to the newspaper archives? I have two articles that I'm interested in, however, can't spend anymore money on my ancestry search for awhile...
They are about Scoin and the Temple Hotel, and are advertisements for selling and wanted. the 16th and 17th June 1946

Thanks very much for your help. I was able to see an ad in the Manchester 1911 newspaper at the link you provided.
It's propbably one of the ads my ancestor in Yorkshire saw.

Even though I wont have a copy. I now know it exsited.

Found that my Great Great Grandfather Robert Hays was killed while at work in the Wallsend Colliery in 1922.

Does anyone know how/where I can get a newspaper article for this, it would probably have been reported in the local Wallsend paper, and since I live in Cornwall it is a bit out of range for a day visit !

There are 2 ways to access newspapers online...

Your local library may have access (free) to the Gale group databases which include the Times Archives (18C to 2006) and some 19C local newspapers (from the British Library Collection). If you are lucky , some UK county libraries also have access to these from home for free using your library card. I don't know if this is the case in the US.

The other method is to access the British Library Collection http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ where you can do free searches but to actually see the article you need to buy credits.

If you give some details of what you are searching, someone may help...

The only obituary that comes up in The Times archived obits is one dated April 30th 2012 - no result for May 9 sorry.

Sorry it has taken me this long to get back to you, Fiona. In response to you question, no I have not tried the records clerk. I am in the USA, and live on a limited income. I just simply cannot affort to pay the research fees, especially with the exchange rate. I was hoping for a volunteer who might live in the area.

Have you tried the local records offices? They ususally hold old newspapers.

I am looking for any information or pointers in the right direction about the death of Elizabeth Caroline Bailey, aged 79 on 1 Dec 1956. She suffered head injuries after being knocked down by a car on Main Street, Thurmaston, Leicestershire.

Sorry. I should have mentioned that. I am in Toronto. I was hoping that someone which library access in the UK could do a quick search for them. I think they might have died in the cholera epidemic that spread through the Middle East in the summer of 1892.

You don't say where you live...

In the UK many of the county library services allow you to use a 'Virtual Library' from home with you libary card - these usuall have the Times archive and the Gale 19C newspapers for free

alternativley the BL archive (overlaps with Gale) is now on line http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/.

You can search for free but the details are charged for.

If you are not in the UK it might be worth checking if your local libary has access to the Times and Gale archives

Hello:

I am looking for an obituary of the parents of Charles Abel who both died from disease in Smyrna, Turkey in 1892. I believe the father's name was John Abel. I do not know the mother's name. They left two orphaned children - George b circa 1886 and Charles born in 1890. The children ended up in a orphanage in the UK. I am hoping that there might have been a mention of their deaths in Smyrna, Turkey in the London Times or other newspaper in the UK.

Hi,

My grandmother on my father's side was Alice Elizabeth Hewitt (1907-1999) of Norton Canes, who was a daughter of Thomas Hewitt (1870-1952) and Mary Downing (1877-1959).

My father spent many years making family history notes, and there are still some gaps that I can't reconcile so I'm not sure how Alice fits into the John Thomas Hewitt side of the tree...cousins or something.

I do remember Alice talking about the "black sheep" of the family...John Thomas Hewitt. The pieces of information that come up here are basically the story I was told, but with one exception. The family wouldn't talk about it for years, but essentially William Masfen came across TWO poachers that day; John Thomas Hewitt and his father John Hewitt (b.1851, living in Stokes Lane), son of John Hewitt (1822-1873) and Louisa 'Lucy' Sambrook (1829-1864).

According to the family it was John the father who killed Masfen, and talked his son into taking the blame because, being under 21 years old, he would not have to face the hangman! The rest of the details here, how he was caught etc, are the same as I was told.

Given the above nugget of information, I found the message that quotes the Cannock Chase Post headline saying "Family says right man was executed" quite interesting. Does this mean there were doubts and rumours at the time, and that the family were coerced or advised to keep schtum, and to accept what had happened?

According to the Indexes on FreeBMD a Robert DUNNETT died Mar 1848 Stepney 2 450

The cause of death should be on his death cert which will cost abt 9.25bp from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Unless his death was 'eventful' i.e an accident or he was a noteable it is unlikely that the newspaper would give cause of death. If they were poor there would not likely be a intimation at all.

Thank you Jacki for that information and it is a start to find out. I have heaps of information on the family only the two sons in the Index I haven't found much as they seem to disappear after the 1881 Census. There is a death of Albert James Hillier in 1919 which I have yet to look into.
