The name has to be some form of French extraction because the "arens" and "spries" portions translate exactly to "arena" and "before."

It would be useful if you could give the source of your contentions. There is no such word as "arens" in French (Harrap New Shorter French dictionary). "Arena " with a grave accent on the "e" is an arena or skating rink. "Arene" (again a grave on the "e") is "sand" in the literary sense, an arena, bull-ring or amphitheatre , "Les arenes d'Arles" = the arena of Arles. Spries simply does not exist in French - "before" is avant or devant. "Avant" is more for time "Venez avant midi" = come before noon. It is also the bow of a ship. Devant is more for physical placing "devant la maison" = in front of the house. or "aller devant" go in front, take the lead.
