Migration along the Santa Fe Trail

Migration along the Santa Fe Trail

Migration along what later became the Santa Fe Trail (in 1821) was mostly by Native American tribal members. The Santa Fe Trail became a commercial link between the US in Missouri and Santa Fe, a city in northern Mexico, almost immediately after they had won independence from Spain.

Does anyone have migration information about who traveled the trail through Kansas and beyond before 1821?

This might be a real long shot but..

There is a gentleman who has done a tremendous amount of research on the Santa Fe Train and has even written several books ( 3 I think ).

I don’t know the exact best way to contact him, but this is what little I do know.

His name is Ron Kessler and he lives/lived in Del Norte Colorado or Monte Vista ( It was between these two towns and I don’t know which one his address went to).

I think that if you search some of the book sites you will find his books.

Hope this leads you to some real help.

Thanks, Glenda. Asking the same question at the Santa Fe Trail email group got an answer of several books on the topic, including one by Donald Blakeslee, another by Alfred Barnaby Thomas, and a third (The Pecos Indians and New Mexico, 1540-1840) by John L. Kessell. He may be related to the Ron Kessell you mentioned.

Anyway, thanks, and I plan to check for these books at the library. What I learn may eventually go onto the "Interactive Santa Fe Trail" site at http://www.ku.edu/heritage/research/sft/index.html
