I am looking for some place to find some info. on migration of German immigrants from Castle Gardens N.Y. to Milwaukee Wi. in the 1870's to 80's. I believe it was done mainly through Railway travel. I need to know the specifics of the travel at that time.

I don't know if I'm doing this correct or not Bruce. I gathere material I found in the 1891 Grain Dealers and Shippers Gazetter, Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. They have listed the various trains that were available during that time period

I have often wondered about this myself. My research shows that many immigrants took a boat up the Hudson River to Albany where they transfered to a canal boat on the Erie Canal to Buffalo. There, you could board a lake steamer or train and go to Toledo or Detroit. From there you could continue north around Michigan on the lakes and sail direct to Milwaukee (I think this was more of a luxury cruise than a passenger line.) Or, you could get a train to west coast of Michigan and catch a ferry across Lake Michigan to Milwaukee. Or, you could take the train through Chicago and up to Milwaukee.

You can learn a lot by entering "U.S. Migration Routes" into your browser. Or you can start by going to the Cyndi's List website and clicking on the Migration topics. There are also Great Lakes shipping sites, and Railroad sites if you are intrepid enough to do some heavy-duty web surfing. Good luck and if you find something extremely cool, let me know.

This is a well known route that you are talking about. By 1875 or so, rail travel was being used directly from Castle Gardens to Milwaukee Wi. The Erie Canal systems were not a choosen route by most in this 1875 period. In the 1850's the Steamer routes thru the Great Lakes and Erie Canal systems were used by most. I am looking for a description of travel from Castle Gardens to Milwaukee Wi. in the 1870's.
Thanks for responding,
Bruce

Bruce; I was thinking about the dates after I posted my message. Instead, try pasting this link into your browser: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?gmd:1:./temp/~ammem_sJ...::

It is a circa 1876 map of railroads from NYC to the West posted on the Library of Congress - American Memory site. Surf around there, the fishing is good.

Also try www.migrations.org and surf through the links.

Good luck and good hunting.

John,
That looks like a good site for the Rail history of the 1870's time period. What I would really like to find would be a diary description of the travel from an immigrant of the times. There are many out there, but I have never found one from German immigrants Castle Gardens to Milwaukee 1870's. There are diaries written Castle Gardens to Milwaukee 1840's-50's, but not anything on the real haydays of immigration 1870's -1890's.
Thanks,
Bruce Gross

If you find a journal from that time period, please let me know too. Coincidentally, I just read a circa 1840 journal of a man that WALKED from Baltimore to Wheeling, W.VA, a distance of about 300 miles! I am amazed time and again by our immigrant ancestors...

I was wondering if you were ever able to find a diary account! My great-grandparents arrived from German Poland in 1880 and went directly to Michigan. I have also been trying to find out what kind of journey it may have been in terms of route and how long it would have taken, etc. Thanks!

No, I was never able to find any kind of Diary Accounts of passage to the Midwest from the East Coast. It does seem funny nothing seems to exist. Many accounts exist for the earlier years from the 1850's ect. This was through the Erie Canal ect. I believe the passage common to people in the 1870's and later was with the Railroad. They tell me the Ohio& Baltimore Railway lines.
