Hello board, I'm looking for a good book or any reference on migration to the ozarks. If a family or three came from NC. to TN. why stop in AR.? This would be the same time frame for gold in CA. HMMM? Thanks GLO

Well part of them might have stopped to claim land and hold it for the others if they decided to come back. One of my families (also part of a large family migration group) left my gggggrandmother to stay with some of the children and other wives and she took care of the farming and business untill her husband and his brothers (and some of their wives and children) came back home from the gold rush in California. Their land was located in southern Missouri.

My Prince, Cooper, Barnes, Moore, Hydrick, Tyer/Tyre/Tyner, Stancil/Stancel/Stansel/etc, Henderson families were in NC,
TN, some in GA, and were in Eastern Arkansas by 1850. Some went ahead about 1834. I am convinced the reason was because of the indian blood some of them carried. Another reason, a few years later could have been feelings triggered by the War Between the States. A lot of Cherokees and Choctaws got off the trail of Tears as soon as they could, in Arkansas and never made it all the way to Indian Territory in modern Oklahoma, and, at that time, much of Ar was Indian Territory.

Thank you so much for the reply, if your families came from NC>TN to east AR. we may be family.Have heard stories that we came from Native blood, but could never find it, I guess it all depends on how popular it is "in the day". Will check it out. Thanks, GLO

Saw your post regarding the migration and noticed your surname BARNES.
Would you, by any chance, have any info on the family of John Barnes who married Mary Sabra Christie, a Cherokee from the Highwassee River area. He is said to have died on the Trail of Tears. They had two known children... John R. Barnes and Redden Lafayette Barnes. Sabra and the children ended up in Newton County, Arkansas about 1834-1835 where she remarried into my BOWERS family.
Any response will be GREATLY appreciated.
Joanne

Not sure right now. Am in process of migrating to the Ozarks, myself. Well, just south of them. If you will contact me at my email address in about a week, I hope I'll be moved and have the internet service installed by then. All my records are packed up, won't be unpacked for a week or two. Her name sounds familiar but not sure. Mom's maiden name was Christy. Barnes hung around with our Prince line so they might be related somewhere along the line. With both common surnames, Barnes and Christie/Christy, I do want to pursue this possibility.

Hi Christy,
Hope your move went well. Just wanted to touch bases re: the Christy/Christie and Barnes genealogy. Let me know when you're ready to pursue these lines and see if we have any sort of connection.
Thanks, Joanne

Ok, Joanne. If you want, use my email and put Christy/Barnes in the subject. I will try to find the census records where I find them sharing a household. The connection for my line seems to be our Prince family. Does that fit into your records, by any chance?

I happened upon your message about the migration from Tenn to Arkansas -- and noticed the name Moore in your family. I had entered my grandmother's name, Cora Belle Norton (married William Jefferson Moore) born 4 july 1881 somewhere in Tenn according to my father's birth certificate. My dad also told me she was of Indian decent -- but all in my family have passed away -- so I have no other information. Is there a Cora in your family history. If so, I would appreciate hearing from you -- I have truly hit a brick wall trying to find some information on Cora -- Her parents, etc.
