I too have ancestors who migrated to east Texas from Alabama and northern Florida during the 1840s - 1870s. During previous generations they lived in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Their surnames were Thacker, Stewart, Cawthon and King. I plan to go to Texas next spring and do some local research. I'd like to know how they got there. Were there any well-known southern pioneer trails, including water routes?

Richard,

I too have relatives that started in Georgia and rode via covered wagons to Alabama and boarded a vessel they referred to as the "Little Mayflower" and took it around the Gulf of Mexico where they then boarded another vessel that took them up the Sabine river to Jefferson, Texas. All this taking place around 1875. My relatives then took a wagon to Dalton,Texas which is close to Marietta,Tx the birth place of my father. I have not been able to find any information on the "Little Mayflower", but a lot of vessels were probably renamed. I am looking into one that changed it's name to "Silvie" . Good luck with your search.

I would love to get some of the information you have on John and Charity Sanders. Charity is a GGGG of mine and I have not been able to get past her because we could never find our her maiden name or heer husband's first name. She was listed as a widow in 1835 census. What information do you have that shows John as her husband? And do you know Charity's maiden name? Also what happened to John?

Thanks

Keith Youngblood
kybloodtytx@juno.com

Many of the people entering East Texas came through Louisana, now Hwy. 7, across the Sabine River by ferry via the Kings Hwy./the El Camino Real, now Hwy 21. Many prominent citizens stayed at the Gains-Oliphant house, just across the river in Texas, then ventured on to San Augustine. They may have visited the Sublet home along the way. After leaving San Augustine where they had done business with hotels, saloons, livery stables, eating establishments and general stores, they may have stayed at the Halfway house on the way to Nacogdoches. If they had not reached their destination, they may have continued on to Austin.

I had always assumed that everyone came by trail to Texas but have learned that many came from other states by boat which may have entered Sabine Pass and came up the Sabine River at least as far as Logansport.

I am researching the following families: John and Charity Sanders, Spanish land grants, Texas 1820s; Sam and Mollie Lee Moore, Ennis, Texas late 1800s; Benjamin Franklin Bell b. 1898 family, Uriah Oliver family, Joe Neal family, and Gooch, Youngblood families.

Betty, are you still offering that migration map to Texas? My relatives went from Morgan County, AL in 1831 to New Orleans (most probably by river) and then from there to the Stephen F. Austin Colony near Columbus, Colorado County, Texas.

The family of Dr. John T. Millar (1787-1831) moved in its entirety, including servants in the Spring of 1831. Some of their servants caught Yellow Fever in New Orleans and it spread to the family, killing John and three of his five children by the Fall/Winter of 1831. John's wife, the former Elizabeth Payne (1797-1837) stayed in Colorado County, TX where their daughter, Nancy Millar married Abraham Alley, one of the original 300 settlers of the Stephen F. Austin Colony. Descendants are still in Texas and some even remained in the Columbus, TX area.

I am interested in putting a book together about this family and others allied to them. I would like to find a map to display their probable migration route to Texas.

Joseph Willis Huey b. ABT 1843

This is my brick wall. I am looking for information on Willis or Joseph Huey. Not 100% sure of his name. My grandfather thought it might be Willis.
Willis Joseph Huey was born abt 1843 or 1846 in Alabama and died sometime before 1900 in Colorado. I was told this story by my grandparents (Wallace was Josephs grandson): "Joseph was good at geology. He migrated to Colorado and worked in mines. He had been called away to work in another mine and was never seen or heard from again. The family returned to Lindale, TX. He is listed with his family on the 1885 Mesa Colorado census. His wife Clementine is listed on the 1900 census in Lindale, Smith, Texas as a widow."
Facts are: (1) listed as Joseph Hewey on 1880 US Census in Tom Green County, Texas (age 37) with Clementine and 2 children. (2) Listed as J H Huey on 1885 Colorado State Census with N C Huey and children. (3)Listed as W. H. Hughey on marriage certificate to Narcissus Clementine Fleming Apr 29, 1871. (4) Listed as Willis Huey on Lillie June Huey Thomas (daughter) Death Certificate. (5) Listed as Joe Huey on Gussie Lee Huey (son) death certificate.
(6) Had 6 children: William Amos Huey b. 1874, Carrie Ola Huey (Goodman) b. 1879, Lillie June Huey (Thomas) b. 1885, Gussie Lee Huey b. 1887, Dasie Huey (Vaughn) b.1883, Thomas "TT" Huey b.1881.
If anyone has any information about this Willis or Joseph or William Huey Please email me at shanblan4@gmail.com

When William died, his wife, Elizabeth (Wheatley) Wood moved to Montague TX and died in 1903 leaving behind small children. She is buried in Montague cemtery. I would say that William died in the late 1890's as children were born after 1895.

Thanks for such a quick response to my reply. The name of your GGG grandfather intrigues me. My GG Grandfather was William J, his son was William Henry, Wm Henry's son was Augustus. Quite a coincidence if they are not connected. I do not have my info with me, but it seems that in early Alabama marriage records I found on Ancestry.com, that there was another Foster/Parker marriage within a couple of years of my GG grandparent's marriage. Do you have any further info on Augustus William that I could use as clues to extend my family search? Thanks again for your response.

I will take a chance that you still monitor this board. My GG-grandfather was William J Foster (b. 1838 in Georgia) married to Elizabeth Parker (b. 1840 in Georgia). I first find them in 1860 US Census in Butler County AL with one young child, John. I cannot find them again until 1885 Florida Census for Washington County. WJ is listed with 6 children and as a widower. Could my WJ & Elizabeth Parker Foster be connected to your Foster/Parker line? I have had a difficult time tracking them and would appreciate any assistance. Thank you so much.

My greatgrandmother Annie M. Higgins and her sister Jane were born in Ellsworth, Me and travelled to Louisville between 1850 and 1860. I would imagine it would be closer to 1860 since they were born abt 1842 and 1845.

They are the only Higgins listed in the 1860 Census born in Maine.

How would they have travelled? Train, coach ?

Jane married in 1863 in Louisville to John O'Day. Her first child George was born in Maine in 1864. Later children were born in Louisville,

Annie married in 1866 in Brooklyn, NY. No clue as to how she got to Brooklyn!

Thanks,
Ellen

I too have folks who went Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Texas. I have a map that shows the migration trails used in the US by most folks. One of them stops in central Alabama and one picks up at New Orleans and goes into Texas. I can send you that map if you'd like to email me at au.beatbama at gmail dot com. I can't attach it here because it's a pdf file.

Betty

The family from Georgia traveled to Tyler Co., TX...possibly along El Camino Real.

Those from southen Alabama ended up in the East Texas area, while those from northern Alabama settled in Central Texas (Milam and surrounding counties).

All of these made the trip from the mid to late 1800s.
I have an Isaac Leatherwood Bragg in my line who was born in South Carolina about 1851. I believe he was either in AL or MS before moving to Texas. He married in Burnet Co., Texas in 1880 to Bulah Spurlin who was born in Al. They moved to Ellis Co. and finally Coleman, Texas, where he died in 1918.

The census lists a Thomas Bragg who lived in Ellis Co. TX, close to I.L. and Bulah Bragg during the 1880s.

My husband's grandfather's family came from TN and someone how ended up in Williamson County, TX then moved to San Patricio County, TX.

I know that in researching the cluster it appears that his grandfather's sister married a Harrell from MS.
