At first, I was assuming that you are talking about printing out the family tree. I was going to suggest going to www.chartmasters.com Good people. They printed out my descentant's tree of my 3rd great grandmother. WOW, something like 30feet wide. Considering the size, price wasn't bad.

Then I read everyone's response. I would do a 'Descendants of XXXXXXX book'. I would read the 'Preserving documents' or 'photography' threads on the best way to do it and preserve it.

Great question. I don't know the answer but hope others will chime in. So far I've been using email and dropbox, but it's not the best method. I might eventually use a website with password protection (or, more likely, a password protected section of my pre-existing blog).

Cyndi
For printing just family tree charts, I've had a lot of luck with One Page Genealogy. The program is free. You can get it from www.onepagegenealogy.com, which will forward you to a BYU site.

In my opinion, I'd like to print my family history research into a book or series of books to ensure it is noticed for what it is when I pass. If someone sees a laptop computer, they may take a quick glance at it for anything important then move on. If they find a stack or file of old papers, they may just trash it. If they see a hardcover book titled "The Smith Family History", I believe they are more likely to either keep it or find someone in the family interested in the family history.

You can find on-demand publishers that can print a hardcover book for relatively little money nowadays. I had my first one printed and for a 210 page book, you can have it in your hands for about $25.

I have Family Tree Maker 2012.I don't have it all on here.
I have over 250 surnames and approx.100 (guess) with individual reports - some are lengthy.I have only done ancestors (not the living)with the help of a researcher and a few visits to Germany. I will probably print it out myself and take it to the UPS store for copies and binding.Have considered doing some of the printing on ancestry but need to read more about it. What program do you have?
I am also thinking of storing several copies of it on a flash drive and CD. thanks for writing.Gloria

Gloria,
I'm sure that no local store will be able to process a GEDCOM for you. They will be able to print .pdf files and .doc files. It will be up to you to compile your book which most programs will do for you. You'll need to think about what format you'd like your book in and how large you'd like to make it and go from there.

Which genealogical program are you using?

I am just beginning to try to figure out what to do in terms of publishing. My local UPS store will print it and bind it.But that means I will have to print out all my indiv.reports of which I have tons of pages on many ancestors. So is it possible for places that copy and make the book like UPS or FedEX copy store to print from a gedcom file? Let me know what progress you have made.
Gloria

Deidre,

Hello there.

The Hart connection in my libe is thru a ggg-grandfather, Isaac Hart. He immigrated from County Armagh in Ireland in 1817. As far as I know he had at least one brother and one sister. They were named Jacob and the sister was reffered to as Betty, I imagine that was short for Elizabeth. He left Belfast in June of 1818 and Arrived in Baltimore Maryland. He married an Irish girl, Mary Carruthers there in June 1819. They moved on to Indiana in reached there in October 1819.

As far as I know there is no connection to Australia but anything is possible. From letters between Isaac and Jacob it appears that they wee in the Linen Merchant business prior to Isaac migrating to the U.S. They went from Ireland to Hamilton Scotland before Isaac came to America at some point to start a Linen Merchant business there.

As you have found out no doubt, Irish genealogy is rather flimsy at best. I have found several families of both Hart and Carruthers in GFriffiths Valuation in Armagh along with Tithe Applotments. I have spent hours pouring thru PRONI and the IOrish National Archives and have come up with lots of possibilities but nothing concrete.

I have connected with several Hart family descendents in the states though. They all have descended from Isaac. We compare notes all the time.

One thing I have found was that it appears very solid that Isaac was Presbyterian or more to the point of the Associated Reformed Church, a branh of the Presbyterian denomination. This leads to beleibe that his family originated possibly in Scotland. Interesting.

Bob

Dear Bob

Yes I tried that but...Thanks anyway. The best thing is probably just to photocopy blowups.

Re the Hart connection, I haven't got far. One of my great grandmother's was Annie Hart b. about 1844, migrated to Australia about 1860. She married a James Atchison and died in 1910. Her Death Certificate gives her father's name as Terence and her mother's as Maria (maiden name unknown), birthplace Armagh. I recently did some exploring in Ireland and found some Harts in Griffiths Valuation or the Tithe Applotments for Annahaia Townland in Armagh including a Terence but didn't get time to look in any more detail. The Parish was Kilevy and I looked through some of the births for Annie but didn't find her.

What is your interest in the Harts? Is it from an Australian point of view?

Regards
Deirdre

Diedre,

Hello,

Two things.

1) You might be able to take the grdcom file to some place like a Office Depot and have them print it for you. Also it might just depend on you tree program. There are lots of charts and reports available with PAF but don't think it works on a Mac. You might try searching the web.

2) It says you are interested in the Hart family of County Armagh around 1800 os so. Is this right? If so I am intersted in a Isaac Hart born in Armagh ca 1780.

I want to be able to print my family trees for display. I want to print them as nice, easy to read sections, with maybe one family and their ancestry on an A4 page. From a Mac. I can only seem to print on a large scale, and have very little control over how it looks (virtually unreadable because too much information on one page- up to 12 children in one family).

I have tried downloading but I can only work out how to download my trees as a GedCom file, which isn't readable with any software on my computer (Mac). I want to download as a PDF or some other image file format.
