What fee to charge?

What fee to charge?

Hi,
I have a family that would like me to enter their family tree data to ancestry.com. He has sent me a PDF file and it's 484 pages long, About half are pedigree charts, some full of names, some with two or three names. The rest of the book looks like a descendant report with pages and pages of text. So, the question is what would you expect to pay someone to do the work? Would it be best by hour, page, or the finished product? Help!!

Did the PDFs come from a genealogy program? You'd be much better off (okay, you wouldn't, but the family would) trying a more direct route. If the program is FTM, it will upload very easily (a new version of FTM would cost less than your time to enter everything directly). If it's another program, he can create a gedcom. I'm pretty sure you can upload a gedcom to Ancestry, but check on it.

How much your time is worth an hour depends on many things, including how close you are to the family and if their tree is in part yours too. Some might charge $10/hour, others $60 or more. You sound new to this so I'd charge little to nothing for your research time in how to make this work. Then probably no more than $20/hour for the data entry part, if you do that.

Honestly, converting their gedcom into FTM and uploading from there might be your best bet. If you can't upload a gedcom directly. No need to do this from scratch.

Hi,
I am not sure if the PDF came from a program, it looks like it did, but as I said I only have the PDF as the file was corrupted and luckily they had the hard copy. There is no computer file otherwise they wouldn't need my services.
Although I have been researching my family for 30 or so years, I am new at charging other people for this service hence the request for advice. There won't be any research done, purely data entry from a PDF. Thanks anyway
