Did the PDFs come from a genealogy program? You'd be much better off (okay, you wouldn't, but the family would) trying a more direct route. If the program is FTM, it will upload very easily (a new version of FTM would cost less than your time to enter everything directly). If it's another program, he can create a gedcom. I'm pretty sure you can upload a gedcom to Ancestry, but check on it.
How much your time is worth an hour depends on many things, including how close you are to the family and if their tree is in part yours too. Some might charge $10/hour, others $60 or more. You sound new to this so I'd charge little to nothing for your research time in how to make this work. Then probably no more than $20/hour for the data entry part, if you do that.
Honestly, converting their gedcom into FTM and uploading from there might be your best bet. If you can't upload a gedcom directly. No need to do this from scratch.
