J S Farrar or J S Farrer photographer Brampton and Wetheral, England
I have photos from J S Farrar of Brampton and Wetheral, Great Britain. They are of the Wannop and Percival families and from around 1880+. Would be interested in learning more about this photographer and would particularly like to view other photographs from them.

Do you know anything else about him such as his first name? One is of my ancestor at age 19, probably taken before he left to attend a school in Poland. According to his daughter he later came to the U.S. to the Sonoma area to purchase racehorses for the King. He decided to stay and married there. There are quite a few years where I can't find him. He may have done some extensive traveling, with his occupation. I have not been able to identify everyone in our photos and haven't scanned all of them, yet. There are names but I don't see them in the research that I have. Where did your family reside?

My Family, the Surgeons were originally from Wetheral in Cumbria and he would have been their local photographer. The scans that I have are from the collection of one of my relations. They appear to have been take arround the 1880s but I can't be sure. I know absolutely nothing more about Farrar as the photos are my only connection. Sounds like a really interesting story that you have unearthed.

The photographer is Joseph Spottiswood Farrer from Wetheral, Cumberland, England. In 1911, he is living on Eden St. in Wetheral. He died in 1952 at the age of 91 at Scalegate Road in Carlisle. Several people own photos from this photographer.

Re: J S Farrar or J S Farrer photographer Brampton and Wetheral, England
Not all of our photos were photographed by him. I will have to review which ones are J.S. Farrer. My following comments are not just concerning the ones taken by J.S. Farrer.
Our photos do have writing on the back for family members and include some relationships in regard to Mary Wannop born 1898 Healdsburg, Sonoma, California, her father Christopher Thomas Wannop born 1861 Wetheral. The photographs pertain to the family of Christopher Wannop born 1824 Stanwix, Cumberland, England and his wife Mary Ivison born 1824 Bolton. Mary Ivison is in one photo and she died in 1885 Carlisle. I will have to review this particular photo but if hers was taken by Farrer that may help determine when Farrer began photographing. We have found these families are indeed on census items and for the correct ages for the people in the photos. I would be interested in being in touch with descendants from these related families. The surnames include Wannop, Ivison, Percival and Wilson. Some of the original photos are in my brother's possession and he has more information about them. My aunt also has some which have not been scanned.
I do not know what photographer's markings there may be on the back but one photo I am still trying to evaluate is for an "Uncle Loui" I have not found him among the Wannop surname so I suspect he may be from one of maiden name groupings associated with this family or an in law. If I remember correctly we have a few others from this set that are not labeled and are unidentified so far.
I would be interested in being in touch with anyone working with Farrer photos to help identify more individuals in the photos.
Mary Wannop born 1898 said there was a book about the Wannop of Carlisle, that her family line was included in. I would also like to locate this book. The book would have existed prior to the 1990's. It would be interesting if it also has photos, perhaps from Farrer?
