OK, sorry to sound panicky, but my mother-in-law sent me all kinds of updates to put into Family Tree Maker, including addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Now she wants a printout of each family that shows the new info, but I can't find anything that will include the address and phone number! I added those items to a descendant chart, but it applies the same address/phone to everyone in the family who doesn't already have one, including DEAD PEOPLE!

If anyone knows what I should do, or any other software that has a nice printout (our library has several different packages) that would be good for a family reunion, PLEASE let me know, ok?

Thanks in advance,
Jack (aka "the new guy")

Welcome!

This message board was created for those who publish genealogy-related family newsletters, and those who are investigating doing so. Here is where one can submit queries, suggestions, and feedback on methods of publishing, ideas for content, software used, and any other concerns pertaining to the topic.

If you already publish a newsletter (or several), your experiences will be appreciated. If you are thinking about publishing, your questions will be helpful and insightful to everyone.

There is already a Mailing List set up at Rootsweb for Family Newsletters. To join or read the archives, please go to:

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Miscellaneous/FAMILY-N...

For now, I will not gateway message at this board to the mailing list. I'd like to see how things go on this Message Board before doing anything like that.

Thank you and, again, Welcome!

Diane I.
Board Administrator

Re: Gatewaying

Hi, guys,
I opened up a discussion about doing so on the List for Board Admins. I'm looking for the Pros and Cons of gatewaying - I tend not to like receiving gatewayed messages on the lists to which I subscribe.

I find gatewayed messages can be somewhat annoying on a List. Posts at Message Boards usually do not quote the original message (which is fine for a Board) and so List Members never know what the gatewayed message is referring to. List Members wind up having to go to the Board anyway, to understand the context of gatewayed messages, and to reply to a poster of a gatewayed message who most likely does not subscribe to the List. There are many people who prefer to limit the amount of emails they receive, so they won't be subscribing to a List.

If a List is kept "self-contained," List Members usually can follow the flow of messages and their contexts. And some Lists have a certain "flavor," while messages gatwewayed from a Board can be quite different.

I will continue to gather opinions on this and, until I get a better feel for what's best, the Board will not be gatewayed. Thanks!

Diane I.
life is good.
Click on name above for email address.

Hmmm... good question! I don't know, but have you gone to the website and read everything they have about types of publications that can get such numbers? I know that ISSN numbers are used for serials, and ISBNs for books, but am unsure where online serials fall in their categorizations and if one number they issue can be used for another medium for the same publication. You may find an answer also at http://www.issn.org:8080/English/pub/ -- let us know what you find out!

Diane I.
Anyone gearing up for Memorial Day/Mothers' Day?

Hi all,

I know we all have different publication schedules, but I was wondering if any of you are preparing anything special for Memorial Day or Mothers' Day. I thought we could bounce some ideas off each other.

I sent out some emails to relatives a while back, asking for some kind of contribution regarding the veterans in their families. As is the case with so many of us newsletter publishers, response was minimal - but the few who did respond were great.

One cousin interviewed her father about his experiences in Viet Nam, and I'm just waiting for the transcription. She told me she found a website that had suggestions for questions when interviewing a veteran, and she also taped it. Her father was in 'Nam, her grandfather in Korea, and her great-grandfather (my GGF also) was in WWI. They were all named Eric, so I'm going to have photos of all three Erics in the newsletter. Her interview will be alongside an article I will write just listing which ancestors and relatives have served in the various military branches. I think the three photos will be a nice juxtaposition of the generations - my GGF on the beach in Newport, RI, in his Winter woolen Navy uniform & cap, holding his trumpet (he was a jazz musician); his son in a more formal headshot portrait in his Navy uniform, and his grandson (my cousin's father) in a mud-soaked Army tent with a big shiney peace sign around his neck.

I haven't yet figured out what to do for Mothers' Day but another cousin sent me a bunch of photos from her daughter's Quincineria (a Spainsh "coming out" party or cotillion for 15-year old girls), so that's a nice start. And my mother's birthday is a few days after Mothers' Day, so I could do something special for her, but she might get embarrassed.

I'm shooting for an end-of April/early May publication for this issue.

Anyone else care to share ideas?

Diane I.
Board Admin.

What's your focus?

I think the best thing to ask yourself is, "What is the focus of my research?" Is there one family line you have managed to gather a good deal of data on, but would like to get others interested in contributing? That might help you figure out out the focus of your newsletter. You don't want to publish a newsletter just for the sake of publishing a newsletter - it should serve as your voice and you should have something to say.

Re: To charge or not to charge - [a surprise]

Hi - I am surprised to find the number of comments so far for no charge - or for continuing the newsletter when the income is low. It matches my view more than I expected. I charge $8 per year and report an overall loss to the IRS each year. My view is that some people go on bus tours or cruises - but I have fun with the family history.
.
I sell back issues for $8 per year, but offer a special price of "the whole works" [7 years] for $32. This helps some people to see what has been going on and introduces some to how complicated it can be. It also gives a "running start" for the serious researcher who wants to see the "big picture" and decide how to help.
.
As a retired hsitory teacher, I believe in the printed page and regard the printed newsletter as "the cream of the crop" in terms of the various items our researchers are sending around and discussing. We can't print it all, so we pick and choose what is most important. It creates a permanent record that can more easily be donated to libraries. Putting it in print seems to encourage people to be more systematic with their confirmations and their identification of sources.
.
I send out a sample page of the newslette by email rather freely - trying to read between the lines to guess what the contact is interested in. I offer to print their query on a "space available" basis even if they do not join. If they share a clear connection to our surname interest, I will send out a sample paper newsletter free - if they will give me their regular mailing address. Or they can send me a dollar and their regular mailing address by regular mail and get the sample newsletter.

Dick Dunagan in Wisconsin
RVDunagan@aol.com

Finding talented and experienced researchers not online

I really enjoy the process of seeking and finding new family history contacts online. Most of the articles for our DUNNGANS OF ALL SPELLINGS newsletter come from people who send me queries, biographical sketches, and short articles by email.
.
On the other hand, some of the most knowledgeable family history people grew up with books, SASEs, and written records and do not own a computer. Or are new computer owners who have not yet done more that email.
.
For my best contacts online I write them at least once a year and report on what progress we seem to be making - and invite them to write. Sometimes I send out a free copy of the newest newsletter with a post-it note suggesting they might be interested in a particular article. One construction contractor bought a computer and taught himself to type in order to exchange information more easily - but that kind of reaction seems to be unusual.
.
Any suggestions for finding and developing a working relationship with important researchers who are not online?
.
Best wishes,
Dick Dunagan editor,
DUNNAGANS OF ALL SPELLINGS newsletter
1969 Pioneer Drive
Beloit, WI 53511
Email: RVDunagan@aol.com

What has helped me alot is a program my husband got me Publisher. It has a few newsletters to chose from. Each time I use another one and I can design it with clip art on the front if like for Christmas.
The newsletters there are 4 pages but since I have alot I can add more pages as needed I have stuck to 6 page with information on both sides of the pages. I use information family has given me when we call them or they send me information either e-mail or snail mail. I have found information on family on the internet and sometimes lucky enough to find pictures that go with the info. I have written the information with my daughter as the one checking for grammer and wording.
I have not asked for any subscriptions family members have given me money when they see us or send checks to me. I have been lucky that way the family members enjoy receiving the newsletters I send one in June as a second reminder of the reunion we have in August and one for christmas. What they have liked is reading about a town or a city that other family members live what they are like and history of the place.
I have a medical article telling about medical things that have happened with family members such as surgeries.
By keeping the amount of pages to just 6 written on both sides I know that the postage will be 60 cents a newsletter for mailing I use manilla envelopes size 6x9 they come 100 per box.
It does take alot of time but I do enjoy it plus the family will sit at the reunions talking about what has been in the newsletter. One year I wrote about Netherlands christmas, a christmas recipe from the Netheralnds and I put a hint in too. The next year was Germany because the family's history does go to Germany and Netherlands. I hope this helps. I will try and help you if you need more help.
I started writing and publishing a PA Flores family newsletter, Floriculture, in January of 2000. I prepared six monthly issues and sent them by mail and e-mail to the relatives on record at our MyFamily site and other listings. In the newsletter I asked for contributions, suggestions, new information, but got zero response. All it became was a report on my research on the origins of the family and discoveries of descendents of the first immigrants who arrived in Phila. in 1739. It was a lot of work with no feedback, so I decided to just prepare an e-mail version and post it on the MyFamily site. Are all family newsletters a one-person show, or is there some effective way to get contributions and responses? In other words, how do you get others involved?
Ronald Flores
Conrad Flores(c1690-1764)> Michael FLORES (c1714-1773) > Johann Michael (1757-1799) > Salomon (1788-1869) > Reuben (1822-1884) > Thomas Jefferson (1851-1916) > William Franklin (1889-1960) > Charles Richard >1914-1989) > Ronald Charles (1940-).

In the 1960s I published a small-circulation family newsletter. The format was 11"x17" offset paper, printed on both sides by a professional offset printer that knew how to make halftones from my photographs.

He insisted on printing up more copies of each issue than I needed. I saved half the extra copies in my closet. Ten years later, one relative asked for a complete set of 11 issues. Ten years later, the same person asked for whatever extras I had, because he wanted to give them out at a big family reunion.

On a small operation, it would be hazardous to your mental health to try to derive satisfaction from your relatives paying you for your newsletter, or participating in any way. Just do it.

Now, my opinion of online newsletters: I am distrustful of Internet sites being around for the long haul. First of all, there's the dot.com crash where hundreds if not thousands of firms went out of business. I can't figure out how some Intenet sites derive their profit. From these banner ads I don't look at? From the obnoxious pop-up ads I close as quickly as possible? From selling my e-mail address?

If I can't see how they make their profit I get distrustful. Maybe they are losing money and will one day pull the plug and the site will no longer be accessible. Some people are thrilled that they can back up their data online for free at special sites offering "virtual disks." I don't trust that as a permanent solution to the backup problem.

What happens to thousands of our queries? Will the site some day charge us to read our own content? Will they erase it all? They have that right, don't they?

It would be a good idea to have paper copies of genealogical material and newsletters.

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles@cs.com

Joey, I loved your website. You're right, it's a great way to keep everyone informed on family matters. I'm making notes for the time when I make my own family web site. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Corrinne Ellis

I have a page in my newsletter where I ask for a voluntary contribution of $10 for a year's subscription. I send out about 40 newsletters at this point. I've gotten donations from about 3 or 4 people. I, like Cindy, send it to people who are descendants of a particular couple in my family tree, and allied lines. I have only published two issues so far, and even if no one else contributes, I'll continue to do so. Cindy does something in her newsletter, which is another one of her ideas I will "steal," :) and that is to have a section where she acknowledges contributors. She calls them "Newsletter Heros" and I'll bet it makes other readers want to contribute so they can see their name in print, too.

Diane I.
life is good.
Board Admin
--------------------
Click on name above for email address

This was a question I pondered when I began publication last year. Because my newlsetter is sent via e-mail each month, it is free. I do indicate at the end of the letter, that it is $5.00 per year if mailed. (No requests for US Mail yet). I am also planning a CD-ROM format now that the newsletter has gone out for a year. Plan to add each year's publications as time goes on. I have noted several rates for the CD-ROM format between $5-$10. Any ideas on a good "average" charge?
