Needing help numbering relatives.

I am trying to find someone who is willing to go into my family tree and assign each person a number. I have read how to do it but it just twists my mind into a pretzel. If there is anyone willing to do this for me please let me know. I want to organize the info I have but there are a lot of family there. I should say that I want myself, my parents, and then my grandparents, two times, grandparents, three time's etc numbered. Not uncles, aunts, or siblings. Again if someone could help me I would very very happy.

The standard pedigree numbering system goes like this:

root person #1
parents: male #2, female #3

Then for each generation going back in time, male parent is double the number of the child-in-pedigree, the child's female parent is double-plus-one.

This makes it easy to find the numbers of the pedigree-only descendants and pedigree-only ancestors.

Usually such a numbering system is applied in home computer genealogy programs, which also offer other numbering systems depending on whether you intend to generate one of several types of reports.

Adding numbers to front or back of name-text in the MemberTree could disrupt the servers' search programs so you don't get likely "hints".

Adding numbers to the "suffix" field will not make them searchable in themselves, but they will display in the tree's List of Person so you know what generation you are looking at. But if you were to download your tree as a GEDCOM file and import to a genealogy program, such suffix- numbers could work out to be confusing in the long run.

You can create a custom fact/event for the ahnentafel number, But, keep in mind, these numbers are only applicable to you and your siblings (and to first cousins, from your grandparents upwards, etc).

Therefore, as the years go by, if you choose to share your info with your son-in-law, or your grandchildren, etc, etc - these ancestors will have different ahnentafel numbers than you have - for the same people. In short, your ahnentafel numbers won't mean beans to anyone else except you and your siblings.

If you choose to download your ancestry tree into FTM, FTM has a numbering system that can be automatically or manually applied to persons in your database. See the Help file: numbering. Here again, these numbers will only have meaning to you.

I don't know if the FTM numbering system gets reloaded back to ancestry if you are syncing or if you upload the FTM file to ancestry.

If you're looking for a fairly easy way to see your ancestral lineage in your ACOM tree, go to the pedigree view (after making sure you are the "home" person in the selected tree). Some people add a particular image/media item as the "primary" image file for each of their direct ancestors' profiles to denote the profiles are those of direct ancestors.

There are several home-computer genealogy programs that offer free versions. Search for genealogy program free on the web.

You can download a GEDCOM file of your tree to your home computer, then import the same file to the genealogy program to view it. The file itself will not be changed, but you should save the genealogy-program's file after importing. Each genealogy program is a little different. Within each, you can also have the program generate a GEDCOM file incorporating any changes you have made, and open that with any other genealogy program.

These will not end up helping you with a numbering system **in the Ancestry.com Member Tree.** The home genealogy programs all have a few choices for how to number the people in your tree, depending on what kind of report you want the program to generate -- from the program, not in or from your Ancestry.com tree (which can not generate any reports unless you want to create a book via Ancestry.com's "My Canvas" setup).

So try out at least one genealogy program, see what works best for you.

There is an Ancestry/Rootsweb message board for Genealogy Software within "Topics", with much discussion regarding currently supported programs -- which include TheMasterGenealogist, RootsMagic and FamilyTreeMaker -- and there are others. The message board does not have a subtopic for all of the presently-supported programs, but if you browse around a little there you can at least get a sense some of what's current and some persistent issues/problems with some.

Do not get discouraged. Every one of us has had a lot to learn, and even the most skilled can always learn something new. High quality genealogical work can not be done as a quick project!

Take advantage of the resources in the Ancestry.com Learning Center, read genealogical blogs, and never be afraid or embarrassed to ask questions.

I got it! I got my Dad's side done now I am going to work on my Mom's. I think with my Mom's I will use the same method of numbering each one but I will put a letter beside it so I know if it is 103M then it is Mom's side. I think that should work out nicely. If anyone has any more tips or hints I really appreciate them. Thanks again!
