As has already been said, if its a small town and an uncommon name, you're probably good. But, when I say small, I mean REALLY small. I have ancestors named Tucker who in the mid 1800s, lived in a county with a population of about 4,000. That would seem pretty small, but there were 3 unrelated Tucker families living there..
Something I have done from time to time is made a test tree, where I put my "possibles," and work on them from there. I make my test trees private so no one sees them and adds them to their trees thinking its confirmed.
