• Historically, genealogist worked with pencil and paper, with limited space to record things. Now, with new genealogical software and record access, is it time to record and differentiate between places at time of an event like

Birth Place vs. Parent’s Residence at Time of Birth?
Death Place vs. Residence at Time of Death?
And other such similar events.

If not already establish, I think it is time to established standards and such standards incorporated into genealogical software.
Opinions / Insights?

• I have used the genealogical DNA services and I discovered my uncle was only my half-uncle! This event, along with dealing with large tree manageability issues, led me to re-think what I should collect/capture for my tree. I was thinking I should prune the trees significantly.

First, unless a branch is historically well-defined, it doesn’t seem practical to collect people born before 1600. It is both hard to collect the necessary records and DNA, in most instances, won’t help before this time.

Second, unless I am trying to establish a specific relationship, perhaps for great-great-great-great grandparents and further back, I should collect ONLY great-great-great-great aunts and great-great-great-great uncles and comparables further back. I should NOT collect such aunts and uncles off-spring.

Does anyone else have well thought out limits/ constraints on what they collect for their trees?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.
