CORRECTION TO 1927 Sheffield Telegraph article re Sir Brian Sandford / Bryan Sandforth

We have some more information on this line, and I have a correction to make. We have found an error in the document source that has Anne Dixon as the wife of Sir Bryan Sandforth of the Battle of Bosworth Field.

Also, a new christening record for Robert the Colonist's sister Jone that's much, much more legible than Robert's in the William Hagey papers, gave Robert Sr.'s occupation as a smith ... and we have information that that meant silversmith. And we've tracked down his apprenticeship indenture, which makes it much more likely that he's the grandson of Thomas of Colchester's first son and heir George of Bassitts in Willingale, and the son of George's second son, Robert (or Robart).

Ergo:

1. Gamel de Sandford
2. Robert de Sandford + Wenissa
3. Robert de Sandford
4. William de Sandford
5. Robert de Sandford (first in Askham)
6. Richard de Sandford
7. Robert de Sandford
8. Sir Edmund Sandford of Askham + Idnoea L'Englys
9. John de Sandford + Isabel Norwicke
10. Sir Edmund Sandford, High Sheriff of Yorkshire + Joan Ughtred
11. Sir Bryan Sandford (brother of John Sandford of Tickhill) + Mary Blackburn (or Abordhurin)
12. John Sandford, Esq. + Anne Pickering
13. Sir Bryan Sandforth, Knight (Bosworth Field) + Anne Griffin
14a. John Sandford, Esq. + ??? (great-grandparents of Hercy Sandford) OR
14b. Nicholas Sandford
15a. Possibly George Saundford, Priest/Parson of Farnham, Essex, John's son OR
15b. Possibly Edmund/Edmunde Sandforth/Sandford, Nicholas's son
16/17. Not sure - There's an ship's master Edmund Sandford, active in 1545, who may or may not be the above Edmund. He may be the father of Thomas of Colchester, but there may be a generation in between (especially if T-Col is Parson George's grandson)
18. Thomas Sandford of Colchester, Gent. + Alice Chambers (first wife)
19. George Sandford, son and heir, of Bassitts in Willingale
20. Robert Sanford of Whitechapel, London
21. Robert Sanford, London silversmith + Kathe Frankwell
22. Robert Sanford + Ann Smith, Virginia Colonists

Any information that would connect Sir Bryan to Thomas of Colchester would be greatly appreciated. The relevant Visitations are spread out over a long period of time, and relied on family members possibly jockeying for position. We've been looking at abstracts of court records.
I think you & others are clearly correct to be very cautious in accepting the Millenium file as though writ in stone. I think many people misunderstand what they are doing & end up claiming completely unprovable links to ancient rulers e.g. Julius Caesar or Attila the Hun. It is far better to start with your own family & work backwards. Really old records (e.g.14thc) are very difficult to prove except through hard to read parish records (at least in the UK). Few of us are related to nobility & fewer still to Royalty!

Found: 1927 Sheffield Telegraph article re Sir Brian Sandford / Bryan Sandforth

My Sanford Posse tracked down a copy of this elusive 1927 Sheffield Telegraph article. It has recently shown up on the Web, but the link to it doesn’t always work. The important thing, though, is that it does not contain a pedigree of Sir Bryan Sandforth of Yorkshire, who switched sides just before the Battle of Bosworth field. Per the article, that's in Harlean MS 4630, folio 514, at the British Museum at the time but now available from the National Archive.

The article says the early generations are unreliable, but it's good from the 8th generation. So, we transcribed it and put that transcription up against WAC Sandford's manuscript on the Westmorland-Askham Sandford family. From Gen 8, it matched enough that we decided to rely upon it for the link to Sir Bryan who fought in the Battle of Bosworth Field.

Subsequently, we came across the Duke of Rutland's papers, which included a notary receipt that gave us his son and grandson, the latter of whom was the Parson of Farnham Parish in Essex. Since the Heralds' Visitations had been getting scanned and coming online, by process of elimination we pushed the Virginia Sanfords' line back to Robert the Colonist's father's father (Thomas of Coggeshall) and grandfather (Thomas of Colchester) in Essex. That left us with tentative representatives of two generations we have yet been to link with certainty. Genetic and heraldic (1375 arms of Sir Richard Sandford, Yorkshire) evidence places us on the line of Yorkshire Sandfords, so we are working on those two generations and their links (feel free to chime in if you have anything relevant).

With the Harlean pedigree, though, we can assert the line to Sir Bryan Sandforth as:

1. Gamel de Sandford
2. Robert de Sandford + Wenissa
3. Robert de Sandford
4. William de Sandford
5. Robert de Sandford (first in Askham)
6. Richard de Sandford
7. Robert de Sandford
8. Sir Edmund Sandford of Askham + Idnoea L'Englys
9. John de Sandford + Isabel Norwicke
10. Sir Edmund Sandford, High Sheriff of Yorkshire + Joan Ughtred
11. Sir Bryan Sandford (brother of John Sandford of Tickhill) + Mary Blackburn (or Abordhurin)
12. John Sandford, Esq. + Anne Pickering
13. Sir Bryan Sandforth, Knight (Bosworth Field) + Anne Dixon
14. John Sandford, Esq. + Anne Griffith (great-grandparents of Hercy Sandford)
15. George Saundford, Priest/Parson of Farnham, Essex
16. Possibly Thomas Sampford of Roxwell
17A. Possibly John Sampford, known son of Thomas of Roxwell
17B. Possibly Richard Sampford, known son of Thomas of Roxwell + Ellen
17C. Possibly George Sampford
18. Thomas Sandford of Colchester, Gent. + Miss Neale
19. Thomas Sandford of Coggeshall + Ann Aylett
20. Robert Sanford, Gent. of London + Kathe Frankwell
21. Robert Sanford + Ann Smith, Virginia Colonists

Any information that would connect Gen 15 above with Gen 18 would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Gedcom files, Frankish Kings

As Jim Lalone has pointed out, GedCom files are not the best way to go for any genealogy, although the ease of downloading someone's files may be tempting.

As someone with several 'gateway ancestors' including Mayflower passenger Richard More, who had thousands of noble/royal ancestors in Britain and elsewhere in Europe, I would try to find 'respectable' on-line sites, and Jim noted 'Genealogics' which is not bad. Can provide other sites I have used, and there are really very few that have good, well-sourced information.
A book that has been in print for many years with continual updates that is in use by those of us who descend from those 17th century immigrants with noble ancestry and which has ancestry from noble/royal persons all over Europe from as far back as the post-Roman era is:
(long title) 'Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists Who Came to America before 1700' - short title being 'Ancestral Roots' - I have the 8th edition. It was created by Frederick L. Weis and continued by Walter L. Sheppard.

Hope this may help. Contact me if more info needed.

Alton Rogers
aer437@yahoo.com

Re: Philip le Despencer son of Hugh le Despencer and Isabella de Beauchamp?

Hugh le Despenser - husband of Isabel/Isabella de Beauchamp -called by history "The Elder" and his son Hugh "The Younger" have arguably been classed as two of the most evil nobles in British history as advisors to the despotic King Edward II. Both were executed for their crimes in late 1326 by Roger de Mortimer and his lover Queen Isabella. They are my ancestors as are Mortimer and Queen Isabella in different lines due to me fortunately being a descendant of Mayflower passenger Richard More, who has well-documented noble/royal ancestry.
The Despenser/Beauchamp marriage produced 4 children, 3 of them were in the More ancestry, Philip being one of those.
Per Douglas Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry pages 275-76 and 612, Philip le Despenser (d.1313) was the 1st husband of Margaret Goushill (d.1349). The Philip married to Joan de Cobham was their son.

For more on the Despensers, let me know.

For more on the whole fascinating reign of Edward II, the Despensers, Mortimer and Queen Isabella, an excellent read is "The Greatest Traitor - The Life of Sir Roger Mortimer Ruler of England 1327-1330" by Ian Mortimer.

Alton Rogers

Re: Leigh family of Egginton, Derbyshire and the Leigh family of Adlington

Hi Jonathan

I'm a descendant of the Every's of Eggington, through Simon Frederick Every, son of Henry Every the 9th Baronet and I'm based in NZ.

In regards to the Leigh connection, various sources I've looked at all refer to the Leigh's of Egginton connecting back to Adlington but none of them have directly state how. Given the amount of documents in the A2A Every of Egginton records relating to the Leigh of Adlington I think it fairly safe to assume that this is the case, however, again the exact connection isn't clear.

The Visitation of Cheshire 1580 (Leigh of Adlington) 1580 gives,

Renold Leigh of Annesley (Notts) of whom the Leigh of Derbyshire decend, and records him as the son of Robert Leigh and Ellen Booth. Thomas is elder brother is stated as being 35yo in 2H6 (1424) so would have been born circa 1390

From records of the Annesley family Alice Annesley married first George Chaworth and was married secondly to Reginald Leigh, she was found to be the heiress of her father John in 18 H 6 (1440).

The visitation of Cheshire gave dates that looked odd, compared to the dates in for the Leigh of Adlington given in A2A. Sure enough, Omerods history of Cheshire gives the inquistion of Robert Leigh of Adlington, the father of Thomas and Reginald as 2H7, not 2H6 as stated in the visitation [1487 compared to 1424]

Omerods, gives the same parents for Reginald of Annesley, and states that he married Mary, dau of Thomas Vernon and had issue.

From the three different sources:

Visitation and Omerod, show a Reginald Leigh of Annesley as the son of Robert Leigh and Ellen Booth.

Visitation states Reginald is the ancestor of the Leigh's of Derbyshire

Omerod gives his wife as Mary Vernon, dau of Thomas.

A2A, shows Maria Legh widow of Reginald Legh late of Blakebroke living in 1508.

And Robert Leigh, who married Anne Lathbury as the son of Reginald Leigh of Blakebrook.

From these, it looks likely that Reginald Leigh, father of Robert Leigh of Egginton is the son of Robert Leigh of Adlington by Ellen Booth. Though given the ammount of Roberts in the Adlington line, and the references to Robert Leigh of Adlington senior in A2A it could be that he belongs one generation earlier and is the son of Robert Leigh and Isabella Stanly.

I'm going to keep an eye out for any more concrete primary sources for the connection. But in the mean time, I'm using the visitation of 1580, Omerods History of Cheshire vol 3 and the supporting A2A records showing the descent of Robert Leigh and Ellen Booth

The Egginton Leigh descent is fairly well supported via the A2A records, and the Baronetage of England.

Gen 1. Reginald Leigh = Mary Vernon, daughter of Thomas Vernon (is a widow in 1508)
Gen 2. Robert Leigh = Anne Lathbury, dau of Alured, and grand dau of John Lathbury of Egginton
Gen 3. William Leigh = Dorothy (who married secondly Richard Needham of Snitterton). [The Baronetage of England, states that Dorothy is the daughter of Thomas Eyre of Highlow]
Gen 4. Thomas Leigh = Anne, dau of William Dethick of Newhall
Gen 5. Henry Leigh = Cathine Horton of Catton (see my earlier post placing her as the daughter of Christopher Horton of Catton, by his second wife Marie/Mary Small
Gen 6. Anne Leigh = Simon Every

I'm a bit geographically challenged when it comes to getting to UK archives so all my research is based of Internet resources and books I have located online, if you want to review the sources I've been looking at:

Visitation - http://archive.org/stream/visitationofches00glov#page/150/mo... - page 151

Vol 5 of the Baronetage of England is on google books (page 51), if you search for Leigh, Dethick and Eyre.

Omerods vol 3 - http://archive.org/stream/historyofcountyp03orme#page/332/mo... page 333

If you're interested, I can send you a copy of the will of Christopher Horton of Catton, a copy of a book written by a cousin relating to all the descendants of the NZ Every clan up to the family reunion of 1980 and some other bits and pieces relating to attemptin to trace all the ancestors of Simon Frederick Every.
Charlemagne and Fastrada did have a daughter named Hiltrude b. 787 but she is not the same Hiltrude that married Lutfried II of Alsace. That Hiltrude was born 748 and is supposedly the daughter of Carloman Martel.

Medieval Combs/Blount/Mountjoy/Cornwall/Foulhurst Ancestry

I am a descendant of John Blount born about 1298, Sodington, Worcester, England died (?) and Isolda de Mountjoy born about 1307 and died 1347..they had a son named John who married
1. Juliana Foulhurst (1353-1381) and 2. Isabel Cornwall (1350 - ? Both of the women had son's by John Blount and each named their son John. I would like to know if someone may have the answer as to which lineage I came from..Foulhurst or Cornwall. Some genealogy sites have said Cornwall while other's say Foulhurst..very confusing!
Later ancestor's were:
Abraham Combs 1624-1685 possibly Berkshire, England, died January, 1685 St Mary's Maryland, USA he was the son of John Combs (unknown dates) and Elizabeth Lovett (1614-1656) she was the daughter of Sir Robert Lovett and Alice Ann Saunders, her mother was Elizabeth Blount born 1572 Blountshall, Leicestershire, England died (unknown date) Y Somme Picardie, France..I hope someone may have the same ancestor's and know which lineage I came from Cornwall or Foulhurst.
Gedcom files, Frankish Kings

Hello, I am interested in seeing if it is at all possible to find Gedcom files for family trees of European Royalty, mainly centered around the Frankish Kings, but if they branch off in any direction then I would love to see where they lead. I would ideally like to find something very complete, that dates back far, and spreads wide.

I am a big fan of ancestry and history, and I find this sort of thing very fascinating!

Any leads as to where I might find this sort of thing without having to research everything myself would be very helpful. It seems to me that this would be a relatively popular subject for historians, surviving family members, and genealogy enthusiasts so I would imagine that this sort of thing would be easy to come by.

A number of the Family Trees (WorldConnect)here on this site allow you to download gedcoms. The problem is the accuracy of them (I am finding about an 80% error rate). The best one but not available to download is Genealogics (use Google to find). There are sources/references for his data, not just someone else's gedcom as a source. There are other royal databases (use Google)but there are not any that are perfect that I know of.

Northwood - Montagu marriage

Hi all. I wonder if anyone can tell me about the wife of Thomas de Northwood (d. 1381). In G Marion Norwood Callum's work the wife of Thomas is not known. However there are many trees on Ancestry which name her as Margaret de Montagu, the daughter of John de Montagu and Margaret de Monthermer, but I have not been able to find anyone who has stated the primary source of this. Also, the only reliable piece of information I can find about Margaret de Montagu is that she was a nun. This does not preclude her being married of course - it was common for women to become nuns after they were widowed - but then wouldn't she have entered the convent with her married name? And wouldn't the sources which mention her then note her marriage? If anyone can shed light on this I would be very grateful.
Clovis (French pronunciation: [klɔ.vis] ; c. 466 – 511) or Chlodowech (Latin Chlodovechus) was the first King of the Franks to unite all the Frankish tribes under one ruler, changing the leadership from a group of royal chieftains, to rule by kings, ensuring that the kingship was held by his heirs.[1] He was also the first Catholic King to rule over Gaul, known today as France. He was the son of Childeric I and Basina of Burgandy. In 481, when he was fifteen, he succeeded his father.[2] Clovis was not only a Frankish king, he was also a Roman official

Margaret Neville, illeg. dau. of Warwick the Kingmaker - was she mother of the Threlkeld sisters?

Hi

I found an old thread about Margaret Neville below, illegitimate daughter of Warwick the Kingmaker. She married secondly Lancelot Threlkeld. Lancelot had three daughters (Grace, Elizabeth and Winifred, I think), but was Margaret Neville their mother, or was his first wife, Elizabeth Radcliffe their mother? Opinion seems divided. But it seems the three daughters were born around 1490, after the death of Margaret's first husband in 1485, which certainly makes it possible that she was their mother.

"Sir Richard Hudleston of Millom c.1440-1485
Eldest son of Sir John Hudleston of Millom and Mary Fenwick
marr.1465 Margaret Neville , illegitimate but acknowledged dau. of
Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, the "Kingmaker" 1428-1471. Her
mother is unknown but may have been a Tilliol, or Moresby (Cu).
The Earl gave Richard and Margaret on their marriage manors at
Blennerhasset and lands at Penrith(Cu) with rents in Coverdale (Y)
Richard thus became brother in law to Richard Duke of Gloucester when
he marr. Anne Neville, dau. of the "Kingmaker" in 1472, his first
cousin. He held many posts under Edward IVth. and Richard IIIrd.
Killed at Bosworth, leaving three children viz:
1. Richard 1476-1503 marr, to Elizabeth Dacre.DSP
2. Margaret b.c.1479 marr. Lancelot Salkeld. Many descendants.
3.Joan b.c.1480 marr. Hugh Fleming. Many descendants including the
Hudlestons of Hutton John.
Margaret Neville/Hudleston marr. 2ndly. Sir Lancelot Threlkeld 2nd. of
Yanwath.
Thibault I Troubadour King of Navarre Count IV of Champagne Children

I am trying to find reliable information on the MOTHER for each of Thibault I Troubadour King of Navarre's (1201-1253) children.
It appears that Henri I King of Navarre (who married Blanche d'Artois) is Thibault's son with Marguerite de Bourbon. But, I have seen conflicting sources about 1) the mother of Thibault's daughter Marguerite de Navarre who married Frederick III Duke of Lorraine and 2) the mother of Thibault's daughter Blanche de Navarre who married Jean I de Dreux de Bretagne.
I appreciate any help on this subject!

Left issue does indeed mean that the individual had children...

Another common phrase is "had issue"....

I have recently traced a line of my Grandmothers to Alice Aline FitzRoy who was an Illegitimate daughter of Henry I of England. It seems he had many mistresses and children from these and he aknowleged many of the children. I am still trying to figure out who her mother was. Would anyone know?

Hi,

Neither I or my friend have managed so far, although I have a tenuous link to Francis Drake.

A girl I worked with could go back via the Dukes of Northumberland to John of Gaunt and beyond.

I guess I just have to keep on pegging away.

I think it must be pretty common, I have linked my sons back to Henry II of England but the funny thing is that I am researching for someone I work with and they go back to the very same line.

From my research Symon Dickinson/Dickenson had a son named Charles who was born and died in Bradley Hall, Staffordshire, Eng. He had married a Ms. Rachel Carter and had the child Henry Dickenson. Henry immigrated to Florinda County, VA in 1654, married Mary Pulliam, daughter of John Pulliam and Agnes Allen and had Thomas Dickenson, who was the father of Archibald Henry Dickenson Sr.

It depends on what source you consult. One says his son was named John, and other sources say there were no surviving children. This does not diminish that fact that he was a fascinating character in English history whose roots apparently went all the way back to William the Conqueror.

See attached wiki definition of "count." Basically it says no you cannot call yourself a count, and especially if you are not of direct lineage, nor the head of the "house" meaning family or estate. Sorry.

"Left issue" what does that mean?

I keep seeing the phrase "left issue" in genealogy reports and historical documents. What does that mean? It seems to be followed by the name of the next generation in the hierachy, so I am assumeing it means left an heir, or had children. See attached file. Please help, because if I am assuming wrong, then my Tree is wildly inaccurate. Thanks in advance!

Unless they had a descendant who married into the Potowatomie tribe and established a Jackson descendancy from the area around Sault Ste. Marie in Canada before 1800, it looks like I can't make a legitimate connection to Richard and Ursula Hildyard of Yorkshire from back in the early 16th Century. Too bad (for me), because the story of that ancestral line is fascinating. And also, I've recently discovered that Sir Anthony Jackson had no recorded children.

Hi cousin! :D I'm also a descendant of Ursula and Richard Jackson...a Jackson daughter married a Pierce son around the Civil War...I'm descended from a couple of Pierce soldiers from the South. Also Sir Anthony Jackson and a #Great-niece of Martin Frobisher, who discovered the Frobisher Bay up in Canada. ~Shauna~
