Everett is pretty elusive to the records, I did manage to find him on the marriage index. It also appears that his father, Louis, served in the Civil War. If you are interested in going further, you can email me: dcole57@mac.com

I found his cards from the AMA, they are attached. It says he died in 1944, so you would have to get a copy of his death certificate from the State of PA. I took a quick look through the death index for 1944 and it doesn't appear the the "S" files are in any sort of arrangement. My head hurts from looking at it. If you do find it, you can fill out the paperwork for a copy of his death certificate. You should find the certificate number on the index. Here is the link:

http://www.health.state.pa.us/indices/1944%20Death.htm

Best of luck!

Since I posted this message in 2009, I have found additional information...apparently he did not die before 1900, and his first name was Norman...Here is what I have found:
"Transactions of the Homeopathic Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania" p. 72
N. A. Saylor is listed as Members in attendence at the meeting in Sept 1899.

Norman A. Saylor, 1940 Diamond Street, Philadelphia; Alumin, Class of 1880, Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania: the Hahnemann medical college and hospital of Philadelphia;
by Thomas Lindsley Bradford (1898)

"Fourth Annual Report of the State Board of Health and Statistics of the Commonwealth of PA, Vol. 4," State Printer, 1889
Norman A. Saylor, registered May 25, 1883, born PA, Residence: 1318 Spring Garden Street, white, Hahnemann Medical College 1880

"Medical and Surgical Directory fo the United States" Polk & Co. 1886
Norman A. Saylor (H) 3118 Spring Garden, 1880, Philadelphia County - population 950,000

Now my goal is to find a death date...He remarried about 1897 (unsure when he divorced Elizabeth Frey) to a Margaret, who died before 1920. I believe he died after 1940 in Philadelphia. Would there be a listing of deceased physicians? Or perhaps Alumni deaths for the Medical College?

Thank you for your willingness to help!

A common complication of Phlebitis is clot formation - also called Thrombophlebitis. Sometimes, when referring to this type of clot, the two terms were used interchangeably.

The inflammation from Rheumatic fever of the heart has been associated with heart damage and also clot formation within the heart.

Thus, when you "connect the dots," it is possible that your ancestor's cause of death was a blood clot (Phlebitis) secondary to Rheumatic fever.

My female ancestor, Emily Schmieding, died at the age of 8 in 1882 in the city of St. Louis. Cause of death is listed as "phlebitis". I have never heard of a child dying due to this condition. Any ideas? Family lore has blamed rheumatic fever or typhoid fever, but that's just oral history. Could the doctor have falsified the cause of death due to an actual cause that was somewhat shameful?

Henry College - 1840's

I'm looking for a Henry College that would have been open in the 1830's-1840s that taught medicine. My ancestor, Dr. James B. Moore, was born in South Carolina in 1820 and died in Tishomingo County, Mississippi in 1855. He had a lot of books that were sold at his estate auction and they sound like college books. I found that one was published in Kentucky and circulated around that area according to google search. (I'll have to find it again to get you the name). Based on this, he may have gone a long ways out of South Carolina for his education. I also think that he was in Alabama at one point since his wife is from there and I can't find a marriage record in Mississippi.

Thanks

"melenaneonstoreum"

Probably melena neonatorum. Not sure if it is archaic yet.

"melena:" the word used for abnormal black, tarry feces/stool caused by bleeding in the upper GI tract; e.g., bleeding peptic ulcer or upper GI disease.

"Neonatorum": Newborns or young infants.

melena neonatorum: melena that occurs in newborns and young infants. May have more than one cause. Sometimes the infant has internal GI bleeding. Plus, I think there is a condition called "swallowed blood syndrome" in infants. The mother has a bleed, and the blood enters the uterus and is ingested by the unborn infant.

I am looking for any information on Everett M. Brandt, a physician who practiced in Denver around 1905. He ran a place in Denver called "Forest Retreat" advertised as "a magnificent private home for the reception and treatment of nervous and mental diseases and alcohol and drug addictions" - he supposedly adopted my grandfather, Eugene McIlmoyle, but never told him (my grandfather) that he was adopted. I can track Dr. Brandt through May of 1910 when he traveled by train from Denver to White Rock, British Columbia, Canada, but have nothing after that. ANY info would be so appreciated!!

Dandj488, thanks very much for your reply! I paid for a copy of a 'verbose' birth certificate containing extra data elements. It had nothing on the father but showed my Dad named only as "Baby Boy O'Donnell". Would the original birth certificate from 1916 even be available for viewing in Pennsylvania and would it add anything I don't already know? I also was able to track down and get a photocopy of the actual written catholic baptismal entry which recorded the fathers name as William Smith (a suspiciously common and possibly fictitious name) but nothing else about him. The search continues with me seeking sources such as WW-I draft lists, Adoption papers, City directories, deeds, Tax rolls, political party lists, Source of payments, boarding house tenant lists, letters to relatives, etc... I live 1,000 miles from Philadelphia so it goes slowly. Even professional geneaologists in Philly have been reluctant to take this brick wall on. Any suggestions or tips would be very welcome!

I had a similar situation. Father's name was absent from the birth certificate. Specifically, it stated "mother refused to disclose."

Generally, medical records are the property of the physician. The patient has rights to access and make copies, but the originals belong to the physician.

After this physician died, the medical records that you seek could have been given to the physician who took over his practice, or, to another physician if the patient went elsewhere. Or, the patient could have obtained their own records.

Current law in Pennsylvania requires that medical records are kept for 7 years after the time of the last patient visit. Children's records are kept until 1 year after they reach the age of majority or 7 years after their last visit while still a minor child - whichever is longer. The records may be destroyed on inactive patient's after this time period expires.

Since he died in 1918, I would venture to guess that physician's records that you seek have been destroyed; although there might be an outside chance that they (or copies) exist somewhere.

The father's information may exist elsewhere. Did you see the birth certificate yourself to verify that the father's name was omitted? Have you tried church baptismal records etc?

Thanks Champlain9, that diagnosis is the pretty accepted one (tuberculosis). I did find an associate research on the person mentioned that stated he had acquired the measles during the Civil War and had to swim across a river somewhere. Following that, the measles settled in his lungs and he suffered with that problem the remainder of his days. There again both situations involved the lungs and would probably mirrored the same symptoms as tuberculosis.

Pat
In the olden days it was the custom to blame teething for colds, diarrhoea's, or fevers. These conditions are caused by germs and not by teething. However, in some babies it looks as though teething lowers resistance, making it easier for an infection to start at that time.

Regards

Can anyone tell me how to find records from a doctor who practiced in Philadelphia around 1916? Dr Samuel P. Gerhard attended the birth of my father and was listed on the birth certificate.

The reason for searching his records is to discover my dad's biological father. The father's name was not listed on the birth certificate. I'm hoping the doctor might have known identity of the father and had background info on the mother.

Dr Gerhard was on staff at the Medico-Chirurgical College and Hospital of Philadelphia and a member of Philadelphia County Medical Society. Sadly, he died a victim of the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918.

Archives of the Medico-Chirurgical College now reside at University of Pennsylvania. They say they do not have records from old physicians. Same story from Pennsylvania Medical Society and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

Places like the Wellcome Library, Royal College of Physicians, will have complete runs. If he is not registered he was not a practising doctor (not legally anyway!). Hope this helps.
