Essential Tremors

One side of my family has five generations with tremors, including what is called essential tremors. I would be interested in finding any studies concerning tremors? Other information would be great also? The primary surnames for this side are Day, Anstess, Goodrich and Farnsworth.

On a different side of my family is the Bradford line which goes back to William Bradford. We have letters for Joseph Bradford born 1771 and in those his daughter writes that she is having a difficult time writing because her hands are shaking. She would have been in twenties. I am interested in whether someone researching tremors might be able to use this information?

I am particularly interested in any families that have been documented for this. I would like to read articles related to genealogy concerning this or view family trees where this may have been noted. I would also be interested in DNA research on this?

Hi There: Yes I too am interested in this topic. My family is The Freitrig Frederick John Arnoldt, Arnoldi, and the William Herman Stenton line. Also on my father's side we are the William Edward Daines and Jane Elizabeth Rooke line.I myself am 65 yrs. old and I have psoriasis which does run in the Daines line but in the past year I have come down with essential tremors and Parkinsonian tremors with sever leg cramps and tremors. Nice to meet you on line. Marlene Russell nee Sawyers nee Daines etc.

It is interesting that you also have Parkinson's. My mother and both of her siblings have Parkinson's and this is the side of the family that also have the tremors. We have been told they are unrelated but I am not sure that I believe this. My mother died from complications from Parkinson's. Her brothers are in their 80's. We have tremors in family members who are about the ages of 17, 22, 40, 50, 75 and 80. It gets progressively worse as people age and doctors reassure us that it is not Parkinson's. Around age 70 they decide that the family member has both types of tremors. All of our family members have remained high functioning until late 70's and are actually very active. We do have some difficulty with writing, typing and other fine motor tasks even in our teens.

Hi again I was only wanting to remove my email address.Yes these disorders do seem to run in families but I just don't know who has what these days. I also have quite bad psoriasis and am having bad flare up at present. This I do know is on both sides of my family. Have had it since I was 35 yrs. Sun does not help and have had most treatments out there including bathes and lights and creams and ointments and pills etc. I am also diabetic on insulin.Used to have migraines since early menopause but stopped when I had 3 minor heart attacks about 5 yrs.back. I hope this helps you in some way. Nice meeting you.

Surnames: Hathorne-Bicknell-Hobart-Wade-Dawes-Smith
I would research Fragile X Syndrome, as the silent carriers of the gene develop FXTAS (Fragile X tremor Ataxia Syndrome) characterized by essential tremors beginning earlier than other neurodegenerative diseases.

I am a carrier. my gene lines are Hathorne-Bicknell-Hobart-Wade-Dawes-Smith.... absolutely either Sherman Hathorne or Carrie Hobart Bicknell Wade

So far nothing like that in these lines but I will keep my eyes open for any descriptions of things that sound similiar. For the people I know of they are healthy until their 70's except for the essential tremors. Parkinson's after 70.

Thanks for your posting. Yes I have both kinds of tremors (essential and Parkinsonian) I have difficulty writing and typing too, also I sometimes go blank when speaking and stop in the middle of a sentence. The most difficult problem is the restless legs syndrome where I have very bad cramps and shaking of both legs. I take a medicine called (Requip) which helps as long as I don't miss a dose. I do not know of any studies going on but would suggest contacting one of the bigger research hospitals. bye for now.
