Have you tried Harvard? I have a great, great grandfather who graduated from there in 1712 with a medical degree (information founds by my Aunt in her research.) I would imagine that the school would have records of graduates. Mine may be a long shot, but it's a place to try. Good luck!

I had to think for a few minutes - I believe Lyman Chalkey (the Chalkey Chronicles)had an entire page devoted to the McClung family of Augusta County. If memory serves, they were one of the "go-to" families of the time!

- I found a reference at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rootsr/VA-...

Those records going back to the early 1700's are so scarce it is hard to get past them. Good luck to you. I hope the email address can provide something for you.

My ancestor was supposedly a doctor from about 1840 and his wife was a nurse. He was born in Anderson County, KY so I contacted Transylvania Medical School. The following email address was given to me: bjgooch@transy.edu

She did not find any record of my ancestor but it seemed like she made a good effort so you might try her and see if she can give you any information.

That's an interesting thought, although I have a feeling my ancestor must have a sponsor who paid for his education so the records might not even help. I cannot even locate him on any census records prior to 1850 when he would have been 40 years old so he definitely was living somewhere that he was not the head of household despite his married status. His wife likewise seems to have been an orphan so someone must have helped him out. Probably will always remain a mystery unless someone out there has an ancestral doctor in the Lincoln County/Garrard County KY area who has people living in the household that they cannot account for. Best of luck in your search!

I enjoyed reading the information on this post. I have an ancestor who most likely graduated from Transylvania Medical School around 1805-07. Found the same information online and had the same response from archievist. Those records have to be somewhere - I bet the bursar's office has the financial records! They always seem to appear!
My 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Clayton Perry is listed as a Medical Doctor in McDonough County Illinois from 1860-1880. Any ideas where he may have gone to medical school or where I might be able to find additional information on him? He listed his place of birth as Georgia and his parents both from Alabama. His was is from either Tennessee or the Carolinas. I tried looking in all those places, but all traces of him seem to disappear prior to 1860. I figured his medical training may be recorded somewhere.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

The University of Cincinnati was one of the first medicals schools in the USA. People from Richmond, Indiana, would not have found it unreasonable to travel and board in Cincinnati to go to the OHIO MEDICAL COLLEGE. This fore runner of UC Medicine is the foundation of the hugh complex it has become.
If you look for railroads that existed from near where the ancestor lived, you usually can find where they went if they had any money at all.
The city of Cincinnati is in southwest Ohio in Hamilton county. The UC digital library is open to the public on-line where you might find his name if he was in town attending medical school. I know they have births and deaths for the city for the 1800s. The death certificates have the doctor's names also. Surely they have a data base of of OHIO MEDICAL COLLEGE graduated.

I actually went to Transylvania U's website and found the email for the reference librarian. Most colleges/universities keep their own records in their reference libraries. She was nice enough to check for me, but found no record of my ancestor graduating. They didn't have records that far back for anyone just attending, just lists of the graduates of the program.

I googled Transylvania Medical School, Louisville, KY - 1856.

Several websites came up, and the first 4 were Transylvania Medical School, Louisville, KY. From there I had to choose the approximate date of my ancestor's entry into the medical school. I found it. I also found the commencement bulletin handed out to the graduates, plus those who earned honors.

Depending on when your ancestor matriculated, the school changed its name sometime in the late 1800s from Transylvania Medical School or College to Louisville Medical College or School.

Hope this helps.

Looking for information on schools that might have trained physicians/surgeons in North Carolina and/or Virginia, 1830-1840ish. I know that Dr. Glenn was at the University of North Carolina 1834-35; perhaps that was all the training he got. Dr. Glenn was an asst surgeon in the Mexican War, and Surgeon in the Civil War. Any info on other schools in the area, and how to find out about students there, would be helpful, thanks.

The 1958 American Medical Directory, p. 37 says that Illinois Medical College, in Chicago, was absorbed in 1910 by Bennett Medical College.

At an entry for the latter on the same page, it says Bennett Medical College in 1915 passed under control of the trustees of Loyola University. The next page says it then became the Loyola School of Medicine. In 1948 the name was changed to Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University.

I'm not convinced I was of any help. Perhaps you can try the online catalog of the Library of Congress, which is not complete for the old titles, as far as I know :

http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PA...

Reg Niles
