Does anyone know who to contact about records of medical school students at Transylvania University during the 1830's and 1840's? Trying to find out if Dr. Anthony Hinkle (1810-1893)ever attended.

I googled Transylvania Medical School, Louisville, KY - 1856.

Several websites came up, and the first 4 were Transylvania Medical School, Louisville, KY. From there I had to choose the approximate date of my ancestor's entry into the medical school. I found it. I also found the commencement bulletin handed out to the graduates, plus those who earned honors.

Depending on when your ancestor matriculated, the school changed its name sometime in the late 1800s from Transylvania Medical School or College to Louisville Medical College or School.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I have seen later records online, but am having difficulty finding early records from about 1828-1840. It is sometime durig this period that my ancestor would have attended, if he attended at all. In 1841 he leaves Kentucky and sets up practice in Arkansas.

I would call Louisville Medical School and request a form to complete to allow you access to a copy of your ancestor's record(s). It will possibly cost something - most genealogical research documents do.

Sorry you are having difficulty; however, that is part of the romance of this journey.

Again, good luck-

Just wondering if you had any luck on finding medical school records? I have an ancestor, Lemuel Wood bacon who I believe might have attended either in Louisville or Indianapolis area around 1840 give or take a few years each way. Any tips?

I actually went to Transylvania U's website and found the email for the reference librarian. Most colleges/universities keep their own records in their reference libraries. She was nice enough to check for me, but found no record of my ancestor graduating. They didn't have records that far back for anyone just attending, just lists of the graduates of the program.

I enjoyed reading the information on this post. I have an ancestor who most likely graduated from Transylvania Medical School around 1805-07. Found the same information online and had the same response from archievist. Those records have to be somewhere - I bet the bursar's office has the financial records! They always seem to appear!

That's an interesting thought, although I have a feeling my ancestor must have a sponsor who paid for his education so the records might not even help. I cannot even locate him on any census records prior to 1850 when he would have been 40 years old so he definitely was living somewhere that he was not the head of household despite his married status. His wife likewise seems to have been an orphan so someone must have helped him out. Probably will always remain a mystery unless someone out there has an ancestral doctor in the Lincoln County/Garrard County KY area who has people living in the household that they cannot account for. Best of luck in your search!

My ancestor was supposedly a doctor from about 1840 and his wife was a nurse. He was born in Anderson County, KY so I contacted Transylvania Medical School. The following email address was given to me: bjgooch@transy.edu

She did not find any record of my ancestor but it seemed like she made a good effort so you might try her and see if she can give you any information.
