I came across the Declaration of Dependence while doing graduate research in 2008. The New-York Historical Society has the documents. There were 2 Declarations. The first one was created after the DoI was read in NYC on July 9, 1776 - about the first week of August. The document was sent to the King and discarded by him. The Tories decided to re-write and resend. The second document had almost 800 signatures. Again it was discarded by the King. It is a fascinating document to read.
