Does anyone know the location of Lot 288 in (Newark) NOL
I have a 1797 Loyalist Settlers of Niagara Townhsip No 1 map - but the lot numbers only go to Lot 184.
My problem is as follows:
According to the Ontario Land Record Index, Alexander MARKLE Sr.was granted land (no Lot mentionned) in Niagara Twp. on 08 Oct 1796.
From what appear to be Council Meeting notes, dated 4th Oct 1796' Alexr MARKLE is granted Lot 102, town of Newark on August 22d
However, Lot 102 was also granted to John CLEMENT.
And then, in another Council Meeting note dated 6 Feb 1822 it says "Alexander MARKLE Senr. Stating that on the 24th January 1797 he was granted Lot No. 182 in the Town of Niagara, that on applying for the Patent he was informed that the Lot had been granted to another person (the 1979 Map shows Peter LAMPMAN associated with that Lot but not the OLRI) not described and praying that his case may be taken into consideration. Granted Lot No. 288."

I have a book of maps here and I see Fred and Peter Markle located on the Reserve on Lake Ontario in NOTL(Niagara Township). Any relation? The Markle lot is approximately north of Lot 116 on the Fry Map. I see lot 116 on the Fry Map dated 1787 is Fred Maricle (Markle????) These names on the reserve are found on Thomas Ridout map of 1811. Perhaps they numbered the Reserve lots at one time. I also see that lots in the town itself go high enough for what you want. I see lot 288 at the south east corner of Mary St. and Simcoe St. I hope this helps.

Deb, Thanks for your reply. I think the most likely place they went to is the Lennox County/Napanee Ontario area, but so far i have not found them there either.

Your Phillip H. Cline is mentioned here.

Look down in Sammon's testimony about his searching "Loyalist" Phillip Cline's house.

There were a lot of Clines in Niagara after the Revolution so your man may have been there for some time and moved north later when the land opened up. Some may be kinfolk.
