We have recently found out that my mother's birth father had a little girl, possibly named Judith Pauline while he was recovering at a hospital in Christchurch around 1944. The little girls' name was Judith Pauline and ironically is also my mother's name, Judith. We would like to contact if possible. Thanks.

Hi Phillipa,

Thanks for the email.

I've been trying to make contact with Grace's descendants for a few years now. Grace was my father's cousin and he and Charles were quite close. I remember as a child in the 1950s. visiting Charles at his home although I didn't actually know who he was until a few years ago when I found his address and realised I'd actually been there.

I have copies of Grace and William's marriage certificate, and her and Charlie's death certificates. I noticed Charles died as a result of motor-neurone disease, a disease that took my older brother's life in 2000. I also have a picture of Grace and Williams memorial stone in the cemetery at Whenua Tapu, Wellington. Fergusson is spelt with two s's. It is the existence of the stone that convinced me there are living relatives. The only child i knew of was Delma and I know she came to England in 1957. I have a copy of the passenger list and also a copy of the passenger list of the Rimutaku on which Grace travelled in 1924.

I can send copies of these documents and would be grateful for details of Grace's descendants and copies of any pictures you may have. You're welcome to details of all the information I have on the Russell family and copies of any relevant pictures.

I have been contacted by Sarah and have sent a copy of this email to her.

Best regards and looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Alan Russell, Nottingham, UK

thankyou for all this info! I am actually searching for my adopted sisters benefit, and trying to find her birth mother. One of her birth mothers siblings was 'Donald Hart' and on the info I have it says 'New Zealand' - paperwork dated 1966 - so he's around 80 now. There is no middle name but Lena King and Henry Hart were their parents names.

I am trying to find twins Sally and Jane Herbertson, children of my cousin Eleanor Patricia Miles born 1938 in Preston, Lancashire, England who married New Zealander Campbell Munro Herbertson, a naval officer in London in 1965. They went to live in New Zealand and were resident in Gibbons Street, Heretaunga, Wellington. They later divorced and Eleanor known as Pat went to work as a nurse at St Paul's School, Hamilton East, Waikato. She remarried someone called Ward and when he died Pat returned to England to live in Eastbourne with her mother. She died in 1998 of cancer aged 60. Sally and Jane's father Campbell married a Susan Janne and died in 2007. I would like to trace Sally and Jane.

I think it is Edward CRAIG Ramsay but I would like for you to take a look at it & give me your opinion. So if you don't mind giving me your email address, I will send it to you. There are a lot of reasons (too many to discuss on this message board) as to why I think it is the Ramsay family I am looking for.
Thank you,
Jessie

Not quite sure if you have the 1911 Census for John Abdy and Annie Ramsay, with their son Ernest at Sheffield. They are living at 234 Main Road, Darnall, Sheffield.

I tried looking on the ships passenger lists for RAMSAY, with no first name. A lot of Ramsays with no first names came up. I think this is a problem:
a lot of passengers weren't bothering with a first name. Often, it would just be Mr and Mrs. That makes it more difficult to find someone like Annie who is missing. Anyway, as Edward Craig Ramsay died at Airdrie, I have a feeling she might also have died in Scotland.

Brian

That is the correct Ramsay family. The Janet Blackley, widow is Annie Ramsay (Blackley)'s mother , also my Great grandmother, Janet Blackley nee Penman.

I cannot find Annie Ramsay nee Blackley's death anywhere-I have looked in Scotland, England, Australia, NZ, USA.

Her daughter Janet Penman Blackley Ramsay (b1891) died in Sheffied, Yorkshire, England in 1903 & another daughter Annie Ramsay married John Abdy in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England in 1907. So I know the family moved to England after 1901 & were living in Sheffield & then moved back to Scotland. I have not been able to find them in 1911 Scotland or England census.
Husband, Edward Craig Ramsay remarried in 1927 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. I have only just recently found Agnes Ramsay (I have her marriage record from Scotlandspeople so I know she is the right Agnes). She married in 1922 in Stirlingshire, Scotland. I also found her death in NZ in 1987.
I am stumped as to what happen to her mother Annie Ramsay (Blackley)-the last record I have for her is the 1901 Scotland census-Agnes's MC states her mother was "deceased so Annie must have died sometime between 1901 & 1922-wherabouts unknown!

I also have found no records for George Ramsay (b1888) & Catherine Ramsay (1895) after the 1901 Scotland census.

Thank you for taking the time to help me!
Jessie

Jessie,
I just found a 1901 Census with the Ramsay family on it. They are living at 139 Stane Place, Cambusnethan.
I also found, living at 133 Stane Place, just three doors away, the following people: Janet Blackley Head. Widow. aged 56, born Wishaw. William Blackley, her son, aged 22, a Coalminer, b Slamannan. John Blackley, son, aged 17, a coalminer, b Airdrie.

I will attach the 1901 census for the Ramsey family. If you can't read it, will you let me know.
...To the right of Edward C Ramsay, I have written "died 1937 aged 71 at Airdrie."
Brian
P.S. If you click the image a few times then it should enlarge itself. I had to write on top of the names, because the print wasn't showing up very well.
Jessie,
I don't know if she died in NZ or came back to Scotland or England. She is difficult to find without knowing where she lived most of her life.

...Another problem is that as she was born in 1899, she will only be on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. But to find her on a census, you would need to know where was she in the early part of her life ... Stirlingshire? Edinburgh?... Glasgow?

Brian

That is indeed my Agnes. The family lived in Sheffield for a short time in the early 1900's & Agnes'sister Annie was living in Sheffield at that time but not at the address given on the passenger list.

Thank you for looking that up for me! Do you know what cemetery Agnes was buried in & if so, would there be a headstone for her?

Thank you, once again, Brian
Jessie

Jessie,
Departing Southampton for NZ on the 30th April 1955 on the MATAROA were the following passengers:-

David Murphy b 19 7 1881 Retired. Last residence:Scotland
Agnes Murphy b 15 11 1899 Mill worker from Scotland

Their last address was 18 Ashley Crege(?), Aston, near Sheffield. [Probably, they came down from Scotland and were staying there temporarily.]
------------------------------------------------------
Just beside them on the passenger list there is another Murphy, but she is from Ireland and possibly isn't with them: Mary Murphy b 8 12 1929 from 5 Queen St, Dublin, Ireland. She is a Domestic, and lived in Ireland.

Hope this helps a little bit,
Brian

Agnes Ramsay & David Murphy

Looking for any information or descendants of Agnes Law McNeil Ramsay (1899-1987) & spouse David Sneddon Murphy (1881-1965). They were married in 1922 in Scotland & immigrated to NZ sometime after that. In 1957, they were living in Petone, Wellington.

I am also looking for Agnes' mother, Annie Ramsay nee Blackley(b1867). She died before 1922 (Agnes' marriage) as well as Agnes' brother George Ramsay (1888-?) & sister Catherine Brown Ramsay (1895-?). I was wondering if perhaps George & Catherine may have also immigrated to NZ.

Annie Ramsay nee Blackley was my Grand Aunt.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Jessie

Hi there I might be clutching at straws? but here goes I think the Norman Cottle you speak of was my Dad? My Mum's name was Ellen & she met Norman in Auckland & had me in 1955. My second name is Valerie & I recall my Mum saying that it was my Grandmother's name on my father's side. Unfortunately I never met him but he is named on my birth certificate.
In my early twenties I tracked down whom I believe was a cousin possibly and we spoke on the phone? He was in Tolaga Bay & worked in the Post Office. He sadly told me my father Norman had died 6 weeks before my call & confirmed I was named after his Mum. Valerie. We had planned to
catch up & meet sometime later but unfortunately I believe he died of possibly a brain tumour but I am not certain??
Does any of this ring true for you.. I would so love to know!!!!!

Hi, this is Joans friend Liz replying to your message. I rang Joan after getting your message and she asked me to ask you if you have any more information and she is also curious as to your connection with the family. Joans father,
Ernest Gregory White, came to Australia from New Zealand when he was 6 years old. He married in Australia and had two wives. His first was Agnes Skinner McConnell, who after their divorce, went on to marry a man called Eric Nicholson.
Ernest then married a Hilda May Barry, who is the mother of my friend Joan, for whom I am writing.
I do hope this is not too complicated.
If you feel that you are connected to this family, Joan would be happy to be put in touch with you as soon as you let me know.
Cheers
Liz
