Thank you so, so much. This is looking really promising. I have been struggling for a while to find any further info. Yes Alice did have a sister called Emma but I had her married to a Flavell - maybe I got the wrong marriage a while back! It looks as though Emma may have gone to Australia as well then. I have never known why my gg grandmother Hannah went to Australia in the first place unless it was because of Alexander Lawrie. I cannot find out anything about him. My original reason for trying to trace my family tree was that my mother has a mourning locket handed down from her grandmother with a picture of a man and woman. Through my research I have managed to establish that the woman was Hannah England but Hannah's first husband, James, died abt 4/5 years before she went to Australia. I then found the marriage to Alexander and so maybe the photo in the locket is of him but I don't know for certain. I know the photos were taken in Charters Towers as one of my Mum's cousins has a photo of the same woman with a younger woman (presumably Alice England) and the photos in the locket have the same photographer's studio background. I am going to investigate everything you have told me. Again, thanks a million - best leads I've had in ages!
