Hi,
I'm not sure how to locate an asylum from that era but your Great Grandfather would surely have been recorded in census years? I've seen census recordings of patients in asylums. If you do not have access to search census records...give me your ggrandfather's name and other statistics and I'll be glad to help you look.

Asylum nearest Palo Pinto County or Parker County

My great grandfather was a patient at Bryce Hospital in Alabama from 1902 until his death. His hospital records state that he was a patient in a Texas Asylum prior to his admission to Bryce. I know that he had family that moved from Alabama to Palo Pinto County and Parker County. Can anyone tell me which asylum would have been nearest these counties around 1900? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In the indexes they are listed probably as Head of Household, since soldiers in various garrisons are also indexed just like Heads. In the Soundex, no, they are not listed with the household. For instance one of my husband's ancestors is listed as "Jane Doe" in the county and town where the asylum was, "inmate of State Hospital"

Are they listed as a separate household all as one or are they listed individually in private households where they would be if they weren't in the asylum?

Patients are in the censuses, at least 1900 and beyond. you can find them in the soundex files. I have not been able to find patients in the censuses before this, probably because they are either not indexed or you might have to go page by page until you find the particular asylum. Look in the index for the census closest to the time you think she was in.

Are there lists of patients published somewhere that we can search. I have a great aunt (I think that is what relation she is) anyway she is a relative that was in an institution in Austin.

I have a letter written by my great uncle that told his Dad or his sister that his wife was in this institution and that she had "lost her mind". The doctors didn't hold out much hope that she would ever recover.
If these lists exist, how do we find them?

Their graves are full of 19th century pioneers who have been buried without names, some only with numbers, or toemstones marked unknown--without dignity, stigmatized by ignorance. A fifteen-state effort, including Texas, has been snowballing to remove this shameful status. Media coverage has been extensive and several bills are making it through the state and national government to correct this problem. Information on this is extensive.
