After a long search I have just discovered that my great grandfather John Joseph Murphy was born in the Dundalk Workhouse in 1897. That's the bad news; but the good news is I learned a lot about Irish records in the process of finding him.

An excellent site is The All Ireland Sources Newsletter. (google AISN) All volumes are available free on line and they are brilliant.

I also learned that many of the Louth resources on websites are identical to those in the Reference Library in Dundalk and you'll get far better value for money by using the very helpful Dundalk Reference Library staff.

And the Civil Registration Office on-line service in Dublin wins hands down on price and efficiency over any other site advertising Irish BMD certificates.

Sorry this sounds like a commercial; I have no vested interest, I am just weary of being ripped off.

So, does any one know if it is possible to trace occupants of a workhouse?
