Austin State Hospital (Texas)

My great-grandfather, from Lee County, was a patient at a state hospital in Texas. I assume because of proximity, that he was at the Austin State Hospital in Austin, Texas. This would have been around 1920. He is not buried on the grounds, but instead in the family cemetery. Does anyone have any hints or tips on what information if any might be available from the hospital and how I would contact to go about getting it?

Austin State Hospital, formerly known as the State Lunatic Asylum, is the oldest psychiatric hospital in the state of Texas. Established by the Legislature in 1856, it commenced operations in 1861 with twelve patients. The name was changed in 1925.

The Hospital is the subject of a history by Sarah C. Sitton, Life at the Texas State Lunatic Asylum 1857 - 1997, published by the Texas A&M University Press in 1999 as Number 82 in the Centennial Series. )Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_State_Hospital)

Obtaining mental health records for ancestors can be very difficult but you should be able to contact the hospital to find out what their policy is.

What information are you looking for? Medical records can usually (by law) be purged and destroyed within only a few years depending on that State's law. I'm here in TX too. Are you searching for a death certificate (or cause of death?) If so, provide his name and date of death and I can get likely find it for you. Another website similar to Ancestry partners with the National Archives and TX death certificates (and birth) have been provided to paid members - which I am one.

Let me know.

I saw your post and hoped you could find a record of my
ancestor WJ Gilbert. He was at the Austin Tx insane asylum around 1912, born 1880. I'm not sure if he died there but I think he must have. Any info would be appreciated.

I found a death certificate for a William Jefferson Gilbert in the City of Bangs, Texas.

Wife was Nancy Ann Herring who is listed as deceased at the time of his death.

His year of birth is listed as Aug 23, 1857 though. His date of death is listed as Apri 20, 1936 and his occupation was listed as a minister and carpenter.

Birthplace was Alabama and father's name is listed as James Gilbert while mother's maiden name was Jones.

Any of that sound familiar?

I saw that you were able to find someones ancestor that was at the Insane Asylum in Austin Texas, and was hoping you might be able to do the same for me. I've hit a dead end with one of my people, he was commited to the asylum and died there as well. His name is Leonard Bernhardt Fostel Born in 1833 and died in 1883 at the asylum. I know it's not much, but that's all the info I've been able to find on him. So if there is anything you can find to help me out, that would be awesome. Thanks so much!
