I searched a listing of patients at the Austin Asylum on the 1920 census this morning, looking for someone else. There were about 37 pages of patients to go through and about 1 page of employees. It is not in alphabetical order but it is on ancestry.com. I suggest you look there.

I saw your note offering to look up info on death records for patients of Austin State Hospital. Are you still able and willing to do that? I am searching for death and burial info on Nancy Jane Kennedy Howard - Mrs. John Wright Howard. The date of death I have for her is May 1, 1881. Family legend has it that she died at the state hospital, and she is not buried in the family plot in Medina County, TX. Any information you find would be very welcome.

I am also looking for the reason a relative was admitted to the Austin Insane Asylum before 1910. My relative died their in 1962. I have the death certificate, but have lots of questions why he was a patient their for almost 50 years. I don't have any family members living that would know the answer. Is there a way to get an admission reason or copy of the court order that shows the reason to commit
Any help from any one out there would be appreciated.

Find-a-Grave has a listing of all interments in the Austin State Hospital Cemetery. The memorial created for my relative was done in 2009 and included the date of admission and the last place of residence. Please note, the spellings of those interred may not accurate.

I am doing research on my grand-aunt Ina White (B: 1 Sep 1898 in Harris County, Texas, USA) (D: 7 May 1978 in Austin, Travis, Texas) SSN:
451-09-4479 Was she buried on the estate? On the 1939 census she is listed as an inmate. Thank you sincerely.

I contacted the Texas Dept of State Health Services in Austin. Requesting the same type of info. you are requesting on my great-grandmother that was in the Austin State Hospital in the late 1910' to her time of death in 1950. I quote form their reply "Records of a mental health facility that identify a former patient are confidential under Tex. Health & Safety Code Ann. Section 576.005, and authorizes us to withhold such information. The ruling specifically applies to a person that is deceased". Only the executor or administrator of a deceased person's estate (who can prove legal proof of being such) can get access to a mental health record and information taken from a mental health record regarding a deceased person.
The only way you are going to get this info. is to get an attorney and do a lot of research. I did find my great-grandmother searching in the US Census as being a patient at the hospital.
Call this number 512-708-9190 and order the book Life at the TX St. Lunatic Asylum by Sarah Sitton. It cost about $25.00. Very interesting read.

My 2nd great grandmother was an "inmate" at the hospital from 1886 until her death in 1933, and is buried at the hospital cemetery. I would like to see her records in order to understand why she was there, but from reading this thread it sounds like it is next to impossible.
