Vincentius/Vincent MORAVEK, Lansford (PA) Coal-Miner 1910

Hello Listers:

I'm doing genealogical research for a friend.

His paternal great-grandfather, Vincentius/Vincent MORAVEK was born in Dojc, Senica, Slovakia in 1858. He emigrated to the USA about 1890 and settled in Lansford (PA) where he became a Coal Miner. In the 1910 Census of Abbott Street, Lansford he is listed as a Boarder, age 51, married 23 years and Coal Miner. I couldn't find his wife anywhere in that Census. He had married Veronica LESSKA/LESKA also from Dojc.

I checked the later censuses for both he and his wife, using just about every conceivable spelling of the MORAVEK name that I could think of, without success. Did he die between the 1910 and 1920 Censuses ? Where was his wife in 1910, had she remained in Dojc ?

The eldest son, Josephus/Joe MORAVEK (grandfather)came to Lansford about 1906 and was at a different address in the 1910. In 1911 he married Justina SLOBODA in St. Michael RC Church, Lansford.

Other sons, Paulus/Paul, Joannes/John and Florianus/Flory, it's believed, joined the family at some point.

My main interest is finding out what happened to Vincent & Veronica before I catch up with rest of the family history. Perhaps someone has access to Lansford records that could check this out for me. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bernard

Hi ZlaticaBeca:

Thanks for those URL's you posted. The info on one was quite interesting regarding the fact that many "immigrants' from that part of the world came to the States with the intention of returning to their homeland. They stayed until they had (hopefully) saved enough money to buy property back home.

This might be the case with my two individuals, although I would have expected them to have remained bearing in mind their respective ages. Since I posted though,I have discovered a "Joe MORAVEK" living in Lansford who I think is directly related to my friend. He has a Facebook page so I'm going to give him a shout. Thanks again

Bernard

You're welcome.
Yes, sometimes our ancestors could not decide or actually they came to America to make some money and go back to the homeland. Some would go and back forth several times and then finaly decide either to stay in the homeland or in America. Possible this ancestor could have died in the influenza timeframe or a coal mine accident or even going back to the homeland.

Bernard,

I saw your post of October 19, 2012

I have some information on Vicent Moravek as he is our great grandfather. I have done a little investigation into the family. What is your connection to family other that being a friend of one of his great grandsons? Would that friend be Michael?

Hi mrodmoravek:

Yes, I'm doing the research for Michael MORAVEK. This past Thanksgiving I shared with him and his family my findings on both his paternal and maternal family lines.

As mentioned in my original post I was (and still am) having trouble locating any information on Vincent & Veronica, beyond what I stated. I have been in touch with a Milan MORAVEK in Dojc, Slovakia, but he said he was not related. Milan's daughter answered my e-mail and said she would pass along my search request to their local parish priest. No response so far.

If you can fill in any blanks I'd appreciate it. Michael did say he passed along what I found so far to some of his family members. My email is angelcynn45@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Bernard

You did not list the County for Lansford, but I show it is in Carbon County, PA. However, the town of Lansford borders Schuylkill Co., where you will find marriages registered for the following:

130-97 Moravec, Frank Jr.; Stupinski, Ann 1931-1950 Wedding Index
146-568 Moravek, Justin R.; Lickman, Juel A. 1951-1969 Wedding Index
127-321 Moravek, Steve M.; Parfitt, Irene T. 1931-1950 Wedding Index
63-533 Moravick, John ; Velicky, Albina 1911-1930 Wedding Index
94-578 Rinker, Charles F.; Moravek, Anna V. 1931-1950 Wedding Index
118-348 Danchak, John; Moravek, Emma 1931-1950 Wedding Index
117-81 Wodarski, Raymond James; Moravek, Verna R. 1931-1950 Wedding Index
129-68 Kashmer, Joseph R.; Moravek, Veronica E. 1931-1950 Wedding Index
63-75 Machaydik, Adam; Moravicek, Kathryn 1911-1930 Wedding Index

Of course, the above records could have transcription errors, but perhaps this will give you some ideas.

Joseph and Josephine lost one infant in Lansford:

PA State Death Cert: Joseph Moravic; Born: 1912; Died: 24 Jan 1912; POD: Lansford, Carbon Co.; Parents: Joseph Moravic, Justina Slatida

A second infant son, Joseph, of Joseph and "Josephine" died in Schuylkill Co., so they lived there at one point:

PA State Death Cert: Joseph Moravek; Born: 1918; Died: 18 Sep 1918; POD: Butler, Schuylkill Co.; Parents: Joseph Moravek, Josephine Sloboda

I also found the spellings: Mohorovic, Marhefkie, Marovic and Marovitch.

The counties in PA kept birth, death and marriage records BEFORE 1906 when it was mandated statewide. You could try a search at Carbon Co.

Good Luck.
