Moshenek family

I'm researching the Moshenek (sp?) surname. The family came to the US in the 1870's- an uncle, father (mother, CAtherine may have died on the way), and several children.
The lived in Virginia a little while. Some stayed and some moved to Detroit, Michigan and Indiana.
If you have any information, please contact me.
Thank you.

Did your ancestor considered themselves to be Slovak or speaking Slovak?
When does the MOSHENEK first appears?
Anyone naturalized citizen? Any US born children?
What religion were your ancestor?
What was a maiden name of Catherine? Did she arrive as Katalin, Katarzyna or?
What sort of ethnicity neighborhood did the family settled in?

1880 Census, it appears as Mushnec for part of the family in the city of Danville, Virginia. But, the teenage brothers were laborers on a farm and in the same census (probably taken by a different census worker), it is spelled Moshenek.
Most records say they spoke German but then another census says Polish and then another Slovak. I'm assuming that the census worker just wrote down what they thought it was because it seemed that everyone on those pages of census had the same thing copied down. I only have record of one that was buried with the Catholic church. I can't find evidence of being Jewish. I don't know the maiden name of CAtherine. Her first name is only mentioned years later in marriage licenses that mention her as deceased. Her surname was unknown at this time. It seems she died when the youngest children were 5 and under so I'm assuming life went on and they didn't have written records and didn't remember.
They were farming in Virginia and then some of them moved to Detroit. From the census, for the ones that lived in the cities, they seemed to have lived with other Austrians.
Thanks.

You're welcome.
We have corresponded in 2012 about this ancestor. I have posted to your other 2012 posts as well. We do know how everyone of our ancestors was "Austrian" or Hungarian", right.

A marriage license most of the time never has a place of birth. It would be a church marriage record and even a state marriage application.

Thanks for your help again. Yes, I've studied the history of A.H. Empire. I have heard multiple times that the name sounds slovak. I have not found a church marriage record for anyone in the family and no record of that. Any clues on where to search other than ancestry and familysearch and various links from those sites?

You're welcome.
One can find a Slavic surname in most of the Slavic speaking countries. The word Slovak might have been a mistake by an US person and could only mean Slavic.
Being that you have an English spelling of MOSHENEK and English is my second language, I'm not sure that I can get started since we don't know is this close to the original spelling in pronunciation or a shortened original MARTIN.

May I suggest you go thru the old posting history and take a second look at the replies you received to see if anything there that you might have overlooked?

Who is the MOSHENEK in SSDI in relation to your ancestor?

Thank you for all of your suggestions. They do give me hints on where to look next. This has been an on and off 15 year (or more) search that is quite frustrating. There are quite a few Mosheneks in the SSDI and all are accounted for and all are my relatives. John Moshenek in the SSDI is my great grand uncle. His brother was my great grandfather and their father was one of the original immigrants here coming here as a teenager. He was also John Moshenek.

You're welcome.
Hopefully your queries on the other boards will bring out other suggestions.
No place in those US born descendants in their church record a parent place of birth?
All we need is a place of birth and then the puzzle pieces will start to fall into place.
