I'm trying to find immigration information for my great grandfather. I've tried everything I know and seem to have reached a dead end. Here's what I have:

1900 US Federal Census

Hogan Olson
Married to Ellen in 1874
Born August 1843 in Norway
Parents born in Norway
Migrated 1876

1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta

Hogen Olson
Married to Ellan
Born apr 1844 in Norway Sweden
Migrated in 1906

Based on the birthplaces of their children, they seem to have settled first in Minnesota then moved to North Dakota and finally ended up in Saskatchewan.
I do not know where they were from in Norway nor am I positive that they immigrated at the same time, since their first child was not born until 1879 in Minnesota.

Right now I'm trying to discover when and how they came to the US and where they were from in Norway. Any ideas?

The name would be Håkan in Sweden. Hogan must be an attempt to spell the name phonetically but try looking under the original spelling. I'm not sure if the name would have been spelled differently in Norway.

Olson would have been Olsson or Olofsson in Sweden and would have been Olsen in Norway. Using the altered spelling used after emigrating will cause great frustration since they used the original spellings when they left the old country. (On the other hand, those who transcribed the records often misread the original name spellings.

My grandmother was a child of Haagan "Hogan" Olson and Elen Johnetta Ericksen. The 14th of 15 children I believe.

Is it possible that we are cousins (of some sort)?

Replay back if this sounds possible.

That sounds very possible. Who was your grandmother? My grandfather was Sidney Leonard Olson.

My grandmother was Bessie Merilla Olson.

I have your grandfather marrying Minnie Wing in Plainview SK and had 11 children.

My grandmother married Ole Nesseth and had 7 Children.

Are we on the same tree do you think?

Are you willing to share your name and which descendent is your parent?

Are you in Ontario?

I am having an Olson Family reunion this coming weekend to fill in the tree from Merilla Olson.

Glad to meet you, cousin!

You can find me on Facebook.

My name is David Allen Olson, my dad is Allen Jonathen Olson and his dad was Sidney Leonard Olson

My mom and dad just happened to be visiting when you sent me the first message and I asked about Rilla Olson. My dad and mom both remember her from when they lived in Saskatchewan.

I don't know if you have a copy of the family tree or not, but one of the relatives in North Dakota did up an extensive family tree a few years ago. I have a paper copy somewhere I think. We had a house fire two years ago and some of my papers have been misplaced but my wife thinks she knows where it is. If I can find it before the weekend, I could scan it and send it to you.

Hi Dave, So wonderful to meet you! I hope we can move the conversation from here and get acquainted. If you would be willing to contact me at qelady21@yahoo.ca I would love to continue our conversation. I'll be seeing my Mom (Lola)on Friday and will tell her about finding you. I am looking forward for finding out more about you and your family.

The scanned copy would be fabulous!

Warm Regards,
Sherry

I haven't been able to find the book yet, but still looking. Hopefully tonight.

I was also just going back through some of the previous messages in my inbox and I noticed a message from someone who's husband is a great grandchild of Betsy Olson. Maybe it will come up at your reunion.
