Surnames: Yaremich, Plaskon
My family (Yaremich) emigrated to U.S. close to the Russian Revolution. They were originally from the former USSR (Kiev, Ukraine). Does anybody have any information on ships, passage routes (perhaap tp New England area) around this time. My great grandfather's name is Jacob Yaremich, but am not sure of any sibling names. His wife was Pauline Plaskon who could not recall her mothr's name on her s.s. # application. They both came into Ellis Island.(she cam in from Izba, Austria...not married yet).

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Marissa,
Have you tried the Ellis Island website yet? They have extensive passenger listings. You search by name only, and you can search many permutations of spelling. It's a great site.

My great-grandparents came over from Russia too, but so far I have not found them in the passenger records.

Good luck with your search.

Thank you. I went to Ellis Island during a trip to NY, but they do not have my family's name either. They are supposedly still plugging in names. However, I am still trying to establish what the correct spelling was or if it was the same. I have troubles since the only people listed in the U.S. with this surname are all my relatives! Good luck to you.-Marissa

I guess we are in the same boat, no pun intended. I am not sure what surnames to search beyond the "Americanized" versions (i.e. the mutilations by immigration officials.

I have not heard the name Yaremich before (of any spelling),so you're probably right in thinking it was changed in some way.

I find myself wishing the Ellis Island ship manifests could be searched by town of origin. Then I might zero in on some possible candidates as my relations, or I might find others who came from their town, and that might help in the search.

Good luck with your research.
Aloha,
Gillian

My grandmother was Tatiana Plaskon Kwoka. I understand her sister was Pauline Plaskon Yaremich. They lived in Bridgeport, CT.

The English Y is a Slavic J sound.
Polish ending ICZ, English ending ICH.

You might want to post on Ukraine's board, if your ancestor's place of birth is in Ukraine.
