Looking for more about George Henry from Faial Islands

I'm trying to research more about George Henry from the Faial Islands. He supposed arrived in the US around 1857 and was born around 1850. I can't find any records until 1880 after he was already married to Rachel Virginia Tryon (not completely substantiated yet, but definitely married to a rachel or rachael). Rumors in my family (again, no citations) is that George Henry isn't his original name and it was something along the lines of dutragulark. However, I couldn't find anything about that name, but was finding names from the Azores of "Dutra Goulart" as a last name. However, with no first name, I'm stuck. I can't find records of when he arrived so I can't find any info about parents or anything. If anyone has any tips or info, that'd be appreciated. Thanks.

The Family of Joao Medeiros Estrella

Joao Medeiros Estrella from Sao Miguel (St. Michael) of the Azores came to Massachusetts in 1884. He was married to Margarida Julia Prudencia and had the following children:

1.Maria Angel Estrella b.1884 m.Manuel Cardoza
2.Jacintha Estrella b.1889 m.Manuel Nascimento Mesquita
3.Manuel William Estrella b.1884 m.Mary Oliver
4.Frank Estrella b.1885 m.Maria Duarte Mello
5.John Anthony Estrella b.1888 m.Sarah Snyder
6.Margarida Medeiros Estrella b.1892 m.Manuel Soares, Amos Davignon, Paul Florio, Harry Henry Selzer

There was a large language barrier here. In "Our Portuguese Heritage" by Marianne Holmes the family is listed as two separate families. The Family of John M. Estrella and The Family of John Medeiros.

In MA vital records, The Census, and various other resources they have been referred to as "Estrella" "Medeiros" "Madeiras" "Maderios" "Star" "Starr" & once or twice "Marshall".

Problems/What I'm trying to figure out:

1. Maria Angel(b.1875) & Jacintha(b.1879) were born on Sao Miguel/St. Michael in the Azores. They are listed on an 1884 Passenger record of the Paladin landing in Charlestown, MA with their parents. Then supposedly Manuel(b.1884) was born in New Bedford, MA while Frank(b.1885) was born in Fayal/Faial and came here in 1887. John Anthony(b.1888) born in New Bedford. Margarida(b.1892) in New Bedford. I have speculations as to how this could happen, but I cannot find anybody traveling here with the baby in 1887.

2. Jose (Joseph) Medeiros is listed as part of the John Medeiros family, is this another child...is he an older sibling?

3. In 1906 Joao goes to the Azores to get his mother in law Anna Maxima, she is never found in any other record...

My grandfather's name was Manuel Pimental Soares. You can probably get in touch with the Hawaii Portuguese Society - Doris Naumu. I beleive she has the Soares genealogy. My aunt told me she is a relative too. My mom had 19 or 20 brothers and sisters and her grandfather was from Azores or Sao Miguel.
Try to google the Hawaii Portuguese Society and get Doris number.
Mahalo from Hawaii!
Charlene Victoria Kamai

Re: Francis J Martin

Hi,
My surname is Martin but I have no connection with you. However, the name caught my eye and so I had a look around... I found the 1930 Census and it gives Francis still working at the Cotton Mill, Fall River. ...By the way, his wife's name is Virginia.

Francis Martin aged 46
Virginia wife 36
Olive 14
Mary 10
Andrae 8
Edmond 2

Hard to make out but I think it says he came to the USA in 1914, or it might be 1911. I had a look for him on the ships passenger lists for the period between 1909 to 1914 but couldn't find him.

Maybe the ships passenger list only used F. Martin, which would make it harder to find him.

Hope this helps a little,

Brian, Glasgow.
