One "Highlands" is Highlands, Orange County, New York State, nickname for Highland Falls. Highland Falls is on the west side of the Hudson River, south of Kingston, Poughkeepsie and Newburgh; it is immediately south of the US Military Academy at West Point. When my family drove from Albany to New York City on Route 9W, we passed through Highland Falls, NY.

Palatine Germans early 1700s (Germany > England > America > New York > Hudson Valley and Mohawk Valley)

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

Not much has been written about the Palatines of New York State, which were the first German group-immigration to America — so I know now. The following book is easy reading and interesting:

"Becoming German: The 1709 Palatine Migration to New York"
by Philip Otterness
Cornell University Press
2004

The Palatines settled in New York City first, then Hudson River Valley, then Mohawk River Valley, and from those places, spanned out to points south, including eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The Palatines had an astounding and hair-raising journey roughly from 1700-1750 AD. All I can say is — "I never knew."

Mary ALTIMES/ALTON Kilmallock Limerick 1834

Can anyone help me with tracing a Mary ALTIMES who married a Matthew ALLEN in Kilmallock Church, Co Limerick in 1834.

I know ALTIMES (aka ALTON) is a Palatine name and I found Mary's marriage to Matthew ALLEN for 31 Mar 1834 Kilflyn in the Irish Records Extraction Database and a further entry in records of the Kilmallock Church records that reads "1834 March 31st - Matthew Allen and Mary Altimes both of Glanosheen in the Parish of Particles and the Union of Kilmallock by publication of Banns in Kilmallock Church and with the consent of the Revd [T F Jabbett?] assistant curate there. Edward Herbert.

But I can't find any prior records for Mary or Matthew in Limerick. Mary gives her birth variously between 1813-1821 in Kilmain/Limerick and she and Matthew (b 1816-1821 Kilmain/Limerick) left Ireland for Bristol England about 1841 before settling in East London around 1846-9. They had two children who were born in Limerick - James b1835/7 and Peter b1837/8 and another seven children later born in England and baptised in the Catholic faith, one of whom is my GG Grandmother. I'm assuming Mary as a Palatine is Protestant, that Matthew was Catholic and that was the deal for mixed marriages, for the children to be brought up in the Catholic faith?

Mary's sister Frances ALTIMES b 1816-1826 in Limerick was married in England in 1847 to a James Rohan, giving her name as Frances ALTON and her father as George ALTON deceased.

This is the first branch of my family born in Ireland and I'm not very familiar with researching the Irish records. I have seen ALTIMES/ALTON in Griffiths and on headstones but until I can establish who Mary's (or Frances) parents are I'm stuck. I'd be very grateful if anyone can help. Rgds Wendy

Thanks for flagging up the Palatine Emigration which I had overlooked. It does seem most likely that JHS was involved in this. Whether he would have sold this book in Germany, London or America is an open question. There has always been a well-developed market for books, and just because the book has, for the moment, found its way to London (at what date this occurred - c.1850 ?? - I don't know) doesn't mean that JHS sold it there. For example, the collection includes another similar book that was at some time in the library of a 12th century Benedictine Abbey in Poland that was dissolved in 1819 and its library broken up ...

Yes, I think the Celsus continues to be very interesting in the very direct picture it gives of medical practices in the ancient world, many of which scarcely changed until as late as the 19th century. In this edition the Celsus, as so often, is printed together with the Liber Medicinalis by Quintus Serenus Sammonicus, who lived sometime between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD. This is a verse compendium of medical knowledge, of supernatural, folk and physician-led remedies, and is famous as containing the first written record of what is now regarded as the iconic magical phrase, Abracadabra.

As I said, I will endeavour in due course to get for you, or anyway post on the site, some images of the book and the signature of JHS.

With thanks for an interesting exchange
Adam

Fascinating timing of your inquiry Adam; just this week I revived my research into the Schram family of West Camp New York. What a coincidence!
Johann Henrich Schram was part of the Palatine emigration of 1709. This was the result of religious persecution of Protestants in the "Palatine" regions of Germany (Prussia) resulting in the 30 Year War and continuing into the 1700's. In 1709, Britain passed a naturalization act that allowed any foreigner who took oaths professing to be a Protestant and pledging allegiance to the British government would be immediately naturalized and have all privileges held by English-born citizens for the cost of a shilling. Under Queen Anne (herself a relation to the ruler of the Palatinate and a noted Protestant sympathizer) these offers brought opportunities for a new life. Under Queen Anne's direction, land speculators who had obtained land patents in the colonies, sent agents to the Palatines with offers of forty acres of land, plus paid transportation to the colonies and maintenance.
So my guess is that Johann Henrich Schram took the opportunity to move his family with other Palatine Protestants to London to gain naturalization and in need of money to go to America sold off unessential belongings, perhaps including the valuable medical book De Medicina by Aulus Cornelius Celsus, which at that time was 181 years old. I have followed JH Schram as best I can in America, but census records only indicate people, not possessions or property or occupation. It is fascinating to think Jo. Herr. Schram might have been a physician or some such that would need such a book. As the book was in Latin, he must have been an educated man! One thing that I find interesting: Jno. Henr. Schram received his naturalization in America in 1715 and not in London in 1709 as was promised, so he might have had to unexpectedly pay for his family’s way to America, causing an unexpected need for cash in London.
I would dearly love to get a copy of the cover of the book or title page and his signature. By the way, this book must be quite a read as reprints are readily available in multiple languages today!
Thanks for taking the time to tell me of this important link to my family!
Best Regards,
John
Hi John

I'm in the UK and at the moment I am cataloguing a collection of rare books belonging to a private school in London. One of the books is a copy of De Medicina by Aulus Cornelius Celsus, a Roman physician who lived in the 1st Century AD, ie. about 2000 years ago. This edition of the book was printed in Venice in 1528. There are three early inscriptions on the title-page, the latest being that of Johann Henr. Schram 1703. I don't have a photo of the inscription at the moment, but will get one for you in due course, probably in a couple of months, when I next visit the library. My interest in the Schram family - I am not a member - only extends to finding out why JHS might have owned this book. Perhaps he was a doctor himself, or a scientist, or a teacher, or perhaps his interest was in collecting books ... I would imagine that he would have bought this book while in Europe, and that therefore his departure to America could be dated between 1703, the date of his inscription, and 1710, his first appearance on the Ulster County census.

Yours
Adam
Hi Adam, So you are suggesting Jo. Henr. Schram owned this old medical book and wrote his name in it as the owner??? I don't have any evidence of his occupation when he lived at West Camp, nor do I know when he died( so the geni.com lead will get me looking there. Anyway, where did you find this book; anywhere near the Hudson River? I would greatly appreciate getting a scan of his signiture. Here is what I know about him:
I.
How to find information when you know the name but not relationship of immigrant?

I have found a passenger list that contains the primary immigrants for my ancestral line. They arrived in the United States on the Brigatine Pennsylvania Merchant on September 18, 1733

Listed are Luwick Evaldt, Agnes Evaldt, and under "children's names" there are Johannes Evaldt, and **Maria Evaldt**.

**I know the relation of everyone but Maria Evaldt.

I had seen one record that I cannot locate again that indicated Maria might have been the Wife of Johannes, but considering that he was listed as a child (under the age of 16) I am skeptical.

Does anyone know if it would have been common for a male, a Palatine (German), to become married so young? It seems like it would make sense that you would want to get married before moving to a new country were there would be few eligible females, even if you were young.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might locate information on how Maria would be related to Johnannes?

I decided to look up your ancestor in the book The Palatine Families of New York, because I was just yesterday researching my Schram family in the book. I never had any thought there would be a connection between our families. However when I checked the index, I found reference to Elizabetha Vogel on page 514. When I opened the page I found Johannes Lamet's story (Hunters list 427). He is not in the index. However also on the page were notations I had previosuly made regarding Johannes' son Johnnes (Jr.) family. It seems two of his children married into the Zitzer family, from which I descend. Though I can't tie to the Zitzer's reference, I thought the coincidence was remarkable. The book shows Jr's son Georg married Elizabeth Zitzer and his sister Anna Maria married Martin Zitzer. If you would like a copy of the page contact me. Are we related--- maybe, but I can't prove it. Thought it interesting though.
John

I agree that he was probably from a rural area and probably not educated, as he just makes a x for his name in early records. The earliest I have him is when he lands in Philadelphia and sometime after marries Catharina Christina.
Next he shows up in Berks county and on to Somerset county. What info do you have?

I am a grandson of said Nicholas, my mother who is now deceased did extensive research into both sides of the family able to trace our Swiss routes back to the early 1200's. Unfortunately when it comes to Nicholas it seems to hit a brick wall in Palatine, Germany. I have book upon books that say the same exact thing...Palatine. This leads me to believe that he was from a farming family who lived in a very rural area.

My GG Grandfather was Charles Pyper (Piper) who was born in Nenagh, Tipperary Ireland in 1811. The info I have is that his father Charles was born around 1780. My GG married a Margaret Armstrong D 1843 in Tipperary, and had 2 sons - James 1839-1940 and William 1841 - 1919. Charles then married Elizabeth Ardel (Ardell)B May 1823 Borrisoleigh, Ireland D Mar 16,1883 Stoneleigh, ON, M 1844. One story we were told was that he was a protestant and she was a catholic and they had to leave Ireland because of this. I have no history on Elizabeth parents. Her brother later went into business with her stepson William in Alberta. I believe that the Pipers are Palatines but can't link my GG grandfather Charles back to anyone from Germany. Nor can I find any history on my GG grandmother Elizabeth. Help! Kelly Lee Craig killer@ntl.sympatico.ca

Nicholas Barron was a g-g-g-etc grandfather of mine even though the spelling is different. I don't have the information you want but a gentleman named Adam Barrone(also a distant relative) has done extensive genealogy work on the family. You can direct you question to him at:
Barrone@softhome.net. You probably have the best chance with him.
In 1710 Johannes Lamet from Holland (Rotterdam) immigrated to New York together with 3000 Palatine refugees. He married to one of them:Elizabetha Vogel. In 1712,they got a son in Westcamp(Ulster) : Johannes Lammert (surname a bit changed, deliberately or by mistake?).He married in 1739 to Anna Sybilla Zufelt.
They got 5 children Lammert etc.etc.
Probably there are people of the surname:
"Lammert,Lamert,Lammertsz,Lahmer,Lamer,Lambert" today in the USA who are descendents from that couple.
In 1697 was born in Holland: Johannes Lamet, my ancestor.
Parents not to be found in Holland.Assumption in (very) short: Johannes Lamet the immigrant lost his first wife in Holland and is the father of Johannes Lammert born 1712 in New York as well as of Johannes Lamet (1697-1775) in Holland.Question:is it possible to find a today living descendent of Johannes Lammert / Anna Sybilla Zufelt ?
Thank you in advance,
Johannes Martinus Lamet (Hans)

"My" Palatines came to New York State in 1710 via England, courtesy of Queen Ann. A long, sad story. Their first winter they lived on boiled grass & wild game. )I always think of them when the weather turns cold and I start complaining.)
Along came the American Revolution. "My" Palatines had signed an oath of allegiance to the Crown at the time of their indenture. The family split; some stayed loyal to the Crown, others did not. The "Loyalists" lost everything they had worked for. King George granted them land in Canada.
Then came the St Lawrence Seaway project, flooding the homes, farms and cemeteries of my ancestors and further splitting families.
Just some thoughts on a cold winter's morning...
Information indicates William Rombough was perhaps in some sort of shipping business as he owned a shipyard. Palatines were some of the initial settlers of New Bern. Any information appreciated. I do not think that any descendent has ever looked for information as to his birthplace, other than "the palatine area".
Hi again

I had a quick look at some bpt records - because often the witnesses/sponsors were relatives. So I suggest you start gathering all the bpt records you can find for this family. Then look at the sponsors and see how/if they connect.

Here's a few I found:

Child: Mally
Bapt. Date: 7 Jan 1773
Parents: John Garret; Elisabeth Waldemejer
Sponsors: Georg Proper, & wife; Berbel Diderich
Source: Baptismal Record of St Pauls (Zions) Lutheran Church, Red Hook

Child: Elisabeth
Bapt. Date: 1 Jan 1768
Parents: John Gerret; Elisabeth
Sponsors: Bastian Weger; Cathar. Waldemeyer
Comment: 6 weeks old
Source: Baptism Record of St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg
St Paul's Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg: 1760-1902
Location: Town of Rhinebeck, Dutchess County --- Denomination: Lutheran

I'm also suspicious that this might be your couple - note the spelling of his surname

Child: Michael
Birth Date: 2 Sep 1780
Bapt. Date: 15 Oct 1780
Parents: John Gerhard; Eliesabeth
Sponsors: Michael Waldemeyer; Eliesabeth Marquart
Source: Baptism Record of St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg
St Paul's Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg: 1760-1902
Location: Town of Rhinebeck, Dutchess County --- Denomination: Lutheran

I'd also look for John and Elizabeth acting as sponsors for OTHER people's children's bapt. Try to figure out what other families they were associated with

Hope this helps!
Lorine

Re: original ships' lists

Thank you, Michael, for your reply. I guess I'm trying to locate the actual original ships' manifests which you say are in the PA archives. Do you know - Is one able to visit there and look at them? My problem is I don't know how the surname Reel came about (I don't think "Reel" is an original German surname but an American interpretation) or when a Reel came from Germany. Reel seems to be in use by the 1760's in my family. I'm not sure which Reel was actually my first ancestor in this country. My thoughts are: Johannes, Jonnas, Johannes Philip, Johannes Philb, Johann Anton. I understand how Johannes is a common first name and the people often went by the middle name. In reading some transcriptions I can see some possibilities but have noticed possible errors in translating the German - i.e. Johann Philb Ried (not "L") on the Friendship in 1727. I've seen Johann Philip Diehl (could this have been Riehl?). I've noticed a Johannes Ruhl/Johannes Reel in 1750 on the Sandwich. I've seen Simon Ruhl/Reel on the Mortonhouse in 1729. I've also seen Rohl and can understand how these were Americanized into Reel based on the German pronunciation. I don't know if I've helped explain my confusion. I do appreciate any input you have and am happy to know the original manifests survive somewhere in this country. I guess I need to get to PA. Many thanks again, and good luck in your research. Happy Holidays, Lauren

Lauren,

The Strassburger/Hinke books (three volumes) are transcriptions of the alien emigrants who arrived at the port of Philadelphia between 1727-1808. Alien emigrants were non-English citizens, primarily Germans (incliding Palatines). The originals are in the state archives at Harrisburg, PA.

The Strassburger/Hinke series were a Pennsylvania German Society publication and are considered The aithoratative work on these lists. Picton Press in Maine has reprinted these books, allbeit in a smaller format.

Another less inclusive book is "Thirty Thousand Names of Immigrants in Pennsylvania" by Daniel Rupp.

I have the original 1934 edition of the Strassburger/Hinke books and would be willing to do a look-up. I would need full name (with possible alternate spellings) and approximate date of arrival if you know. You may contact me at ltsp80@paonline.com .

Michael Heckathorn

Palatines to New York

I am a direct descendant of Elizabeth Waltermire (Waldenmeyer). Her father was Georg (Jury) Waldenmeyer. She married John A. Garrett, son of Thomas of Great Nine Partners in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rhinebeck. From the dates they are part of the Palatines. I have searched for untold hours for more on John Garrett. I now believe that his father or grandfather might be the Palatines who first went to Ireland or England and then the US. I also am beginning to think the name was Gerrit or double t. Does anyone have information that would help in my search? John A. was born in 1747.Elizabetha was born in 1747 and was baptized in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Rhinebeck (Stone Church)
Thank you.
