In 1892 Anders Martinius Augensen = Anders Martinius Johnsen(or Anders M. Johnsen).
HELP! Kjel & Anna Tomassen Vangen Ship Record Search.

I have been trying to locate my direct ancestors ship record for 5 years now, and have not had any luck with finding it. I am looking for Kjel sometimes spelt Kjeld Tomassen (Thompson) Vangen. They came from Vangen Norway so that was a part of their last name. The Family that came over together are as follows:

Father -Kjeld Tomassen Vangen he was born in 1830 so he was about 31 when he came.
Mother -Anne Thomassen Vangen (Maiden name Anne Johannesdatter Midje) she was born in 1829 so she was about 32 when she came over.

Daughter- Gjetlaug Kjelsdatter Vangen she was born in 1853 so she would have been about 8 years old when she came.

Son- Thomas Kjelsen Vangen he was born in 1858 so he would have been about 3 years old when he came.

Daughter- Gunhild Kjelsdatter Vangen she was born in 1860 so she would have been about 1 year old when she came.

Mother of Kjel- Gjetlaug Kjelsdatter Vangen she was born in 1794 so she would have been about 67 years old when she came.

It is believed that Gunhild passed away while coming over on the ship and was buried at sea. It would be nice to confirm this record and see for sure if there is a way to trace that.

All I know otherwise is that the family came to America in 1861 and settled in Minnesota. If anyone can help me locate their ship manifest I would be greatly appreciative of it. Any help would be great in this search, as I have tried and tried to find them! Help!

Hi, That was a volunteer who helped you - not related. I also am not related. I noticed that you wondered about Mette's middle name. It may be that her death is recorded at West Moe Lutheran Church in Moe Township, Douglas County, Minnesota and maybe some volunteer there would look it up, it you write to them. The church can also probably tell you if the Hammer family members are buried in the church cemetery. The family was active in this church. http://www.dchsmn.org/places/churches/

Do you know of the website called Find a Grave? It may be that a volunteer with Find a Grave will be willing to go to West Moe Lutheran Church Cemetery and find Mette's grave. Again, I do not know but we can guess she is buried there.

It seems very possible Odin was on the SS James Timpson when it sank.

"Ship's Crew Rescued Just Before She Sinks"
October 1924
New York Times
LINK:
http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F70F1FFB3B5F...

This might be a newspaper story about the wreck of the ship called the "James Timpson" in 1924. Odin had been a crewman on that ship - it seems for many years. Then he is found in the 1925 New York Census married and working as an auto mechanic. By 1930 census he is an "engineer in the Merchant Marine," sailing again. So it's sometime after 1924 that he stops sailing in the Caribbean, and finds himself on a cargo ship in the Great Lakes.

More facts about the cargo ship "SS James Timpson"
built 1917 - wrecked 1924
Traveled from Belize, Honduras and Nova Scotia to New York
A maritime history book (search for it on Google) says the SS James Timpson was of the "maximum cargo, minimum crew type."

About Chicago - when I opened up the search and looked other places (not Chicago) I found more about him. Chicago is kinda where he died, as you told us - in a shipwreck in Lake Michigan, off the coast of Chicago.

During World War I the United States had men register for a military draft. This does not mean the man served in the war. Only that the government had information about him, so that he could be called to serve, if necessary.

WORLD WAR I
DRAFT REGISTRATION
31 MAY 1917
Name: Oden Gunerius Peder Johnson
Lives in Galveston, Galveston, Texas, USA
Birthplace: Okvik, Norway [hard to read]
Birth Date: 14 Apr 1894
Race: Caucasian (White)
Single, Tall, Blue Eyes, Medium Build, Lt Red Hair
OCCUPATION: Marine Fireman
[Tells who his employer is - hard to read]
Citizenship: Alien (not a US citizen yet)

> "Odin Gunnerus Peder Johnsen immigrated to Chicago, Illinois." <

Such a sad story. Yes, I can see you'd like to know more about him.

A few questions: When did Odin leave Norway? Did he travel immediately to America? When did he arrive in USA? How do you know Odin went to Chicago when he immigrated?

I would think that Odin would not be listed in regular passenger lists, because we can guess he might come to the USA as a crewman on a ship.

I believe it's "your" Odin Johnson b 1894 in Norway who appears in the 1920 census in Richmond County, New York. Richmond County includes a metropolitan area with many harbors and marinas. This is an area of major shipping ports and is adajacent to (really part of) the New York City metro area. It is possible to travel from this area up the St. Lawrence Seaway and into the Great Lakes, and up into Lake Michigan, where Odin died.

=========================================================

Now here are some records that show Odin G.P. Johnson born about 1894 in Norway who is serving as a crewman on a ship. He is traveling constantly, to many places. I will attached a few images so you can see what the original records look like.

SOURCE: New Orleans Passenger Lists, 1813-1945 on Ancestry.com
Name: Odin G P Johnson
Arrival Date: 26 Jun 1922
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
Age: 28
Birth Date: abt 1894
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Belize, Honduras
Ship Name: James Timpson
Race: Scandinavian
Norwegian, US naturalized citizen
Physical marks or peculiarities: anchor and heart tattoo, lower right arm

SOURCE: New Orleans Passenger Lists, 1813-1945 on Ancestry.com
Name: Odin G P Johnson
Arrival Date: 18 Jul 1922
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
Age: 28
Birth Date: abt 1894
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Belize, Honduras
Ship Name: James Timpson
Race: Scandinavian

SOURCE: New Orleans Passenger Lists, 1813-1945 on Ancestry.com
Name: Odin G P Johnson
Arrival Date: 9 Aug 1922
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
Age: 28
Birth Date: abt 1894
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Belize, Honduras
Ship Name: James Timpson
Race: Scandinavian

SOURCE: New Orleans Passenger Lists, 1813-1945 on Ancestry.com
Name: Odin GP Johnson
Arrival Date: 19 Sep 1922
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
Age: 28
Birth Date: abt 1894
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Belize
Ship Name: James Timpson
Race: Scandinavian

I am looking for information on my great great uncle Odin Gunnerus Peder Johnsen from the city of Narvik, Nordland in Norway who immigrated to Chicago, Illinois. He was born in Hakvik, which is in the municipality of Narvik, Nordland, Norway. His birthdate was 15. april 1894. My great great uncle Odin Johnsen was working as chief engineer on a gravel ship which unfortunately sank in Lake Michigan, Jul 1936. Unfortunately he drowned. He happened to be sleeping in the bottom of the ship when it happened. He was married, but he had no descendants.

His siblings names were:

Kristine Ebvarda Johnsen born 1. August 1896 in Hakvik.
Ragnhild Marie Johnsen born 25. March 1899 in Hakvik.
Klara Lovise Johnsen born 31. July 1901 in Hakvik.
Petra Antonette Julie Johnsen born 5. January 1893 in Hakvik.

His mothers name was Rebekka Margrete Jakobsen (Jakobsdatter) born17. juli 1863 in Hakvik.

His fathers name was John Martin Olsen born 19. February 1847 in the city of Trondheim, Noway.

I am attatching:

One photo of his father John Martin Olsen.
One photo of his mother Rebekka Margrete Jakobsen with Odins sisters. (Odin was not in the picture.)
Also a link to an article written about the ship that sank.

http://www3.gendisasters.com/illinois/20590/chicago-il-grave...

I am greatful for any help! :-)

Sincerely Anniken

Hello

Iver Odin Olsen was born in Trondheim Norway 16.Jun.1844. in the cencus of 1865 he is 22 years old and still living in Trondheim. We are unable to locate him in Norway after that cencus was done. We know that he supposedly moved to Chicago. We searched for him at Ancestry search all records and found a Iver O Olsen cabinetmaker who lived in Chicago from 1878-1889. We dont know if this is the same Iver. If anybody can help out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have some information about your grandfather... Some years ago I was at "Fretex" a second hand shop here in Haugesund, Norway. There I found a lovely black and white drawing of 2 ladies sitting by the piano. I loved it so I bought it, and it is now hangs in my livingroom (my daughter wondered who he was, so we googled him and ended up here!).

On the back of the drawing there is this handwritten info: "Harald Jordan Født i Bergen 1875, og døde i København 1955. Kjent for sin elegante strek. Nr. 3 av 6 kopier."

If you would like a photo og this picture, please give me your email adress.

Regards Aud Marit, Norway

Laurel, I am a retired nurse (42 years)I had a spinal fusion last year-nothing stresses the body quite like nursing.
I have very little info about Norway. Mom said Grandma Randina came from Trondheim. She does remember Martin visiting when she was a girl. Randina married Ano (Andrew) Swendby (also from Trondheim)and they had 3 girls. The last one Hilda was slightly retarded. My mother's grandmother was Hannah. Her sister called her "Ba" for baby and it stuck. I knew her as Grandma Ba. She died when I was around 3. (circa 1950.) She had 2 girls, Helen and Luella. Luella was my grandmother. Ano had a son with the neighbor's teenage daughter (?!?) His name was Cornelius and Grandma Randina was nursing Hilda at the time and when the mother died in childbirth, she wet-nursed Cornelius. Mom remembers him well-he remained part of the family for life. Luella had 2 girls as well. Verna (known as Tootie) and my mother, Helen.Tootie was married twice and had 6 kids and my parents had 11. I am the oldest and the youngest was born when I was 23 years old. I will ask my mom what she remembers about Trondheim (from her grandma)Judi

Hi Judi,
Thanks so much for giving me this information. I haven't been able to log in to see the photo on your tree. I will try again.
It is exciting to find someone with the same ancestry. My great grandfather's last name was spelled Van Wig here in the states. We are not sure why - perhaps at Ellis Island he pronounced it that way and became the official spelling for that branch of the family.
I would love to know more about Martin Van Wig and his life in Norway- especially about the ships he sailed on and his life as a young man. I would also like any info on the area where they lived. Do you have any of that?
I plan to visit Norway one of these days and would love to visit the birthplace or homestead area. I have always heard it was Trondheim, but was it actually in the city or an area nearby?
I look forward to hearing from you.
I am a retired teacher ( 34 years) and am now a travel agent.
Laurel

Laurel, I am the great-great-granddaughter of Randina Wanvig, you g.g.grandfather's oldest sister. She was my mother's great-grandmother. Look on my tree (Griffin) and there is a picture of my mother when she was 12 with her great-grandmother, Randina in the back. Mom is still alive-she will be 88 in February. She tells me that when your g.g.grandfather emigrated, she was already living in Omaha, Nebraska and he stayed a few day on his way to California. Mom remembers him. Grandma Randina always wanted to go back to Norway to see the Northern Lights once more before she died-unfortunately, she did not make it. My mother's name is Helen Elaine Olsen Griffin. Mine is Judi Timms and I live in Bellevue, Nebraska. Judi

jwiborg1
Suzanne forwarded your info on Bertha G. Olson to me. Bertha's husband Jan Magnus Eriksson Ekstrom was my great-great uncle. Are you a relative? If you would like info on Jan Magnus. I have the family back to a marriage in 1735. I did not have Berthe Marie 1829,so added that to the tree. The only diference in records is the birth record for Berthe Gurine is from Froland parish, Aust-Agder, not Arendal. I have Maren Johannesdatter's family, and Maren's father's family.
I would appreciate that very much. I got in touch with one of my relatives who has done a little research and the only thing she knew of my great-great grandmother was she was born in 1879, although, she did not know where in Norway. As the years go on, people forget these things, that is sad and I would love to find out more.
Thank you for being so helpful. My email address is: deanna_fla@yahoo.com
Thanks again, Deanna
P.s. how do you pronounce your name? Is the j or b silent?

You can use familysearch.org. It's free. If you are not a paying member you can use the free part of ancestry.com. Use the name you know as child, spouse, husband, father, mother or siebling. And you can find out different things about your family members.

Have I found the right norwegian name for Margrit? And is it your Margrit I have found the emigration for? Do you know which year she was born? Here in Norway you can go to the Parish book and search for your ancestors. I am member of a "forum" where I can post my questions. I have got lot of usefull help from other members.

Your Anders Olsen is born in US and Wisconsin. In the census he has a middle name K. Do you know anything more about him? Olson tells me that the first name for his father was Ole. Was he norwegian or swedish. If you give enough to locate the living places in Norway for your ancestors I can give you a link or a address to the right Parish book(s). My email address is oddb-br@online.no. Here in Norway we have a TV program named "Alt for Norge" where american people is in a competion doing a lot of norwegian thing at the places where their relatives came from. The winner win a meeting with their norwegian relatives.
I didn,t knew anything about my Anders Olson's family. My mother told us that her grandmother was of another family. After meeting an american lady on this board, I have used numberous of hours and years hunting for my real family. And Anders was the person who gave me most trouble. There is hundreds of Anders Olson in US. And when I were looking for relatives I also figured out that my great grandfather also emigrated to US and Minnesota. I visited the cementery and the church he built in Sinclair, MN.
Greetings from Oddbjørg in a snowy Norway. Which part of US do you live?

I am trying to find that out as we speak. My Great Grandmother Bella Wildmo is 99, my mother lives with her and she is getting a lot of information from her and trying to document it. I also have 2 family members that have done family geneology, I am trying to get in touch with both of them.
My Great Grandmother's father is the Andrew Olson in was speaking of, and I know he married Margrit Stenruedue, who of course was my great grandmother's mother. Margrit came with her mother into Ellis Island, from which part of Norway, I wish I knew.
I do know that my Great Great Grandfather had a brother named Albert, because I have heard the story how Andrew (my gg grandpa) who was 16 and his brother Albert 9 walked from Iowa to Minnesota to get homestead land. Pretty fascinating!!!!
Two years since I posted my message. Lot of things have happened since then. I found that my Anders Olson later changed his name to Andrew Tolgen. He lived some years in Rushford, Minnesota. Around 1870 he moved to Renville, Minnesota. He lived there some years before he and his family moved to North Dakota and Minot and New Town. He got married to Ragnhild Thufta and they had 11 children. Last summer I visited Rushford and New Town where I found his tombstone. After over two years hunting for Anders Olsen I at last found him. Thanks for your answer. Where in Norway came your Anders Olson from?
My great great grandfather is Andrew Olson, his wife was Marguriete Olson. I know they migrated around that area in Minnestota (first it was North Dakota though). My great grandmother, Bella Olson (now Wildmo-still living) then migrated to Michigan with her husband Roy Wildmo (my great grandfather-who is now deceased). I am also searching for information....I wonder if this is the same Andrew Olson.

Hi,
I would like to know if anyone has information on a Sverke Gulla who changed his name to Swan Evans after he immigrated to the US. Swan was a logger for the English Logging Company in Skagit Co.,WA and he was born 10 Apr 1893 in Norway. He immigrated to the US in 1911.

There is also a John Evans who was born 9 Jan 1891 in Norway working for the same logging company and staying at the same hotel in Skagit Co., WA. I want to say that they are brothers from Surindalen, Norway.

I am interested to see if they might be related to my husband's family, the Dalseg family also from Surindalen, Norway.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gwen

Ragnar Strom,b. Sept. 22, 1988 in Norway. He died in 1967 in Frankfort, Michigan U.S.A.. Ragnar married Ellen S. Stolson, b. 1895 and d. 1968 in Frankfort, Michigan U.S.A.I found two different ship passenger lists for Ragnar Strom. One says that he left Liverpool, England and arrived at Portland, Maine on Jan. 2, 1910. The same list shows up saying that Ragnar left Liverpool, England and arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia in Dec. 31, 1909. Ragnar Strom was a fisherman.
