Hi, my name is Melinda Flanagan, I have been working on my family tree for over 2 years now. Saddly every one with the answers has passed away. When i began I new only the names of my grandparents. I have only recently gotten as far back as my great great grandparents. I have always been told that my Family came from Ireland. Only I do not know when where or how. I also do not know how to to find that out. When i try to find out it seems you need to know who when where and how. Does any one have any ideas for me to try to find out? Any thing at all would be helpfull. And just in case any of you are researching the same family, I am Flanagan.
Melinda Flanagan (me)
Albert Flanagan (my dad)
Wince Flanagan (my grandpa)
Ora Hunter (my grandma)
Jim Flanagan (my great grandpa)
Mattie Littles (my great grandma)
Louisa Angeline Flanagan (my great great grandma)
Please if any one knows of any of these people please reply. And if you do not know of these people but you have an idea how i can trace my family back to Ireland plese reply. I would be forever greatfull for any help. Thank you for takeing the time to read my message

A good place to start

One of the best places to start is with the death certificate. It should date and place of birth. If you know approx. where in the USA they lived in 1900 you can request the census for that area from your library. It takes awhile looking through the micro-film but you might get lucky.

Thank you for the reply. I know that in the 1900'S my family lived in Alabama. But the parents of those people also lived in Alabama. Do you think my family could of came to the USA in early to mid 1800's. I actually have them in Alabama in mid 1800's. Do all Libarys have the census films to look at? I never new about that. We have orderd some census. But you have to pay for each you order, that along with paying for social security records and death records gets to be a bit spendy. And if you order it and then find it is not the right person just the same name. I have always been told that we are Irish, but I am begining to wonder. All though Flanagan seems very Irish.

Library Census

Okay lets try this again. I have so much trouble with this page. Hopefully this one will go through. The library is PUBLIC. If you ask them to order the micro-film for a certain area there should be no charge. The only problem is time. You have to sit at the Library and do the search. About 10 years ago I did it and I was lucky it only took about 12 rolls of film. And I was searching Manhattan, New York. If you think your family was there from the mid 1800's ask for the 1880 or earlier films.
Also try the ajmorris.com, they had a couple of ships from 1845. Good luck, Kathleen

Thank You
