In some TV archive there is a tape of living history about the Irish who came to Portland to work on the docks. I saw it a few years ago but it must still be around. I never realized there were so many Irish there as my father's people were French and thought the Irish were not in their class and I was not allowed to associate with the children. My mother being Irish just hated this and only came to Maine to suit herself.

We are from the Portland Conneens. Edward and Mary Conneen, they had a grocery store on Mountford street I think it was, in the 1800s.They came over in about 1857. They had a son named John, a son named Edward and a son named Daniel. John was a milkman. He married Elizabeth ORourke and they had six children, one of them was my great grandmother Marion. The family named stopped there because all the boys died when they were children. The Conneens did very well for Irish immigrants back in 1800s

Still working on this? Recently determined my dad was adopted (born 1933) - his birth mother was a Goodfellow who lived in Portland, born in Rumford (she just died at the age of 102; her father James was from PEI; his father was from Ireland.

My dad's birth father was John W. Quinn, apparently living at 20 Boyd Street in Portland. His father came over from Ireland (John C. Quinn). John C. was married to Gertrude (Nolan or Jordan) Quinn.

My dad was raised in South Portland and Portland, but by his adoptive parents.

Hi Matthew,
I am looking for some of my Cardiff relatives, did anyone reply to your post? I am Irish and we lost contact mid 1860 on wards with this side of my family, The last area based on a letter in 1914 I have is from a Michael Lawlor living at 8 Meadow St in Arizona,he was on his way to visit Dooleys, Dempseys and Cardiff's about 100 miles away, unfortunately the direction of where these families lived was not recorded in his letter.
best of luck with your research, hope you find lots of assistance, sounds interesting. sheila
