Surnames: Delozier
My ancestor, Daniel Delozier, setteled in Baltimore, Maryland in 1685. Owing to the fact that he came to the British Colonies, I was wondering if Daniel was, in fact a Huguenot.

What is the origin of Daniel DELOZIER?

There appears to be an extensive amount of American research on the DELOZIER family all descending from the patriarchal Daniel Delozier, whose origins can be summed up in two particulars: 1685 France. Are there no other details? I did not see them. When did he arrive? What ship? Was he a victim of “cabinboy” syndrome with his name omitted along with the unknown “others”? What is the documentary evidence for his origin in France in 1685?
What is the relationship between the variations: DELOZIER, DE LOZIER, LOZIER and DELOSIER, DE LOSIER, LOSIER? Spelling often changes with the changes in location, particularly when it also involves a change in language. So while the name may have been DELOZIER consistently after his arrival in Maryland, it may have existed in an alternate incarnation prior. There is some good information on the name LOSIER in the Dutch Reformed Church in early New Jersey, apparently connecting to the early New Amsterdam colony. There were also French Huguenots associated with the various Dutch churches, but LOSIER first names seem to be leaning toward Dutch. The best researched surname in this area is probably DEMAREST.
If the birthdate and birthplace of Daniel Delozier are based on calculation and presumption, this might be worthy of some consideration.

Regards,
KA

I believe the origins of Daniel Delozier the oldest known Delozier found in America are based on calculations and presumptions.

The 1776 census in St. John's & Prince Georges Parishes, Prince Georges County Maryland showes this group:
Edward Delozier 53 b 1723
Ann Delozier 50 b 1726
Male 90 b 1686 (maybe Ed's or Ann's father)
Female 20 b 1756
Male 19 b 1757 (maybe Jesse)
Male 14 b 1762 (maybe Asa
Female 11 b 1765 (maybe Rhoady)
Male 9 b 1767
Male 5 b 1771 (maybe Edward)

The birthdate of Daniel (1686) is taken from this record but nowhere has it been shown that this person, age 90, is acutally Daniel. It could have just as easily been Ann's father as it is Edward's.

Even if this is in fact the right Daniel I don't find any documented information on his birthplace is France. It is very likely that he was from France because Delosier is not an unusual name there.

The spelling of the name sometimes shows the various pronunciations - Delozear with an "ear" at the end; Deloziea with an "e-ay" at the end; and Delosure - just like it looks, De-low-sure. I see the Pa Delozier's mostly used the Z and the Maryland Delosier's mostly used the S.

And then there are the French one's in Ste. Genevieve Missouri, in 1794. The "Pierre Charles Dehault Delassus Et De Deluziere" who's decendents went by either Delassus or Deluziere.

I think until we know more about Daniel we should keep our options open.

Hi Carole, the following info appears to be credible, William Elder, Ann Elders father died 25 Apr 1754, so he could not the the male abt 90 yrs old in the 1776 census, also, William and his wife were living in Campbell VA in 1754, not in Maryland. The first documented evidence of Daniel in Maryland that I have found is in 1708, but have heard from others that he arrived alone in 1702,but have found nothing to document it. This could be possible though because my wifes family arrived in Norfolk in 1702, possibly the same ship just continued on the Potomac to Prince Charles. Still checking this out.

Hi Robert,

I don't know why people think that Edward Delozier's wife Ann was Ann Elder. I have seen this many times and I don't know where it started.

Ann Elder who was the daughter of William Elder was born Oct 4 1751 in Emmitsburg, Frederick County Maryland. Her father, William died 1804 in Frederick County Maryland. He mentions his daughter Ann as the wife of Daniel Delozier in his will.

Edward's (born c1723) wife was also named Ann surname unknown. She and Edward married before 1756 probably in Prince George's County Maryland. Two of their children, Asa and Roady, were christened there at St. John's Parish, Prince George's Md. From INDEX TO THE REGISTER OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS IN ST. JOHN'S OR PISCATAWAY PARISH, PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY FHL film $14303 item 1.

If you have data on this Ann also being an Elder, daughter of a William Elder please let me know, I don't know anything abt William Elder who lived in Campbell VA. This would be a great find.

I did add Thomas Delozier who died in Chesterfield Va in 1788 as a son of Edward and Ann. The 1776 census record in Maryland for Edward shows a male born in 1767. There is no other mention of him in Edward's family but the Thomas who died in 1788 died before Edward made his will and he had no children so I think he fits as the 2nd youngest son of Edward & Ann. Let me know what you think

Good luck with you research, Carole
