Name Changes!

Surnames: Marienfeld, Farros, Faross
Hello! I have more of a technical question. My great-great grandfather emigrated with his mother, father, and two sisters to the USA from Germany. His mother, father, and two sisters traveled under the last name "Marienfeld" but he traveled under his mother's maiden name, "Farros" (also spelled as "Faross"). Does anyone have any idea why? He was 16 years old when he came to the USA. I'm unsure if he traveled under "Farros" for a logistical purpose or whether he had a different father. He then went on to use "Marienfeld" as his last name the rest of his life. Any insight would be much appreciated!

Could be that someone knew that most immigration clerks could not understand anyone with an accent so your ancestor was told to use another name. My ancestors were Polish. I cannot tell you how many problems I have had looking for them.
