Republic of Cecily (Germany)

Hello all -

I'm looking for some guidance on the attached Naturalization Declaration of Intention, that I have off Ancestry. The below is (absolutely) my ancestor, Joseph Gustaves Stanger (b. ca. 1826-1831). We have always known he was from Switzerland from Census records and children's baptismal records (St. Gallen). But I have been unable to find records in his birthplace. In this naturalization entry, it looks like he is saying that he's from "Germany" which could make sense because of border changes. But it appears that he's saying he's renouncing allegiance from the "Republic of Cecily". I have been unable to determine where that might be, and if it's part of Germany near Switzerland or if I am barking up the wrong tree. Can you help me find where this might be?

Thank you...

Of course there was no political entity called Germany at the time. St Gallen may have been a protectorate, not a full member, of the Swiss Confederation at the time.

Thanks Dave for the input. Nearest I can figure in the reference to the "Republic of Cecily" is that this had something to do with a ruler in the German area at the time. There seem to be a lot of Princesses with the name "Cecilie". And perhaps it was just transcribed as a republic in error. I found Joseph Gustav Stenger's baptism record in Westfalen (below). Since subsequent siblings were from St. Gallen, I'm thinking the family moved from "Germany" to St. Gallen, Switzerland, had a few children, then immigrated here. Thanks for the feedback.

Hal
