Thanks so much for that Don, I really appreciate it. I have been trying to work out what Robert David Coley (my grandfather) was, I think he was a Merchant Marine (Australia), something I haven't really explored yet, mainly because I have no idea where to start. I will now follow up the references in column 13 to see if I can get more info. I live in Australia and have never been to the UK (unfortunately). Jenny

If you are in England I would like to say that I spent a delightful 4 years in West Ruislip, Middlesex in the mid 1960's as a member of the USAF. Don

Jenny. It appears he was a crew member, an engineer on the SS Neuw Amsterdam, sailing from Melborne and arriving in San Francisco on 6 Mar 1943. He was a male, married, 41 years of age, born in North Palmerton, New Zealand, last permanent residence was in Melbourne. If you would like a copy, I could forward it to you if I had your e-mail address. Don

Hi,

I think it is not a mystery. Nikolaj Lajter stated his brother Piotr Lajter in Chicago as destination and father Piotr L. as relative in Russia ( ship list Nov 11, 1912).
In 1942, there is a Nicholas Liter in Chicago, born 1892 in Poland, who arrived Nov 14, 1912 in Port Huron, MI (naturalisation record). But I don+t find him in any census from arrival to naturalisation.

Kind regards,

Thomas

Lajter Brothers Travel to USA via Canada

Aggafya born 1866 married to Peter Lajter, born 1862.
They married in 1887.
They had 3 children - Peter, Anna and another son.

Peter and his brother, who I do not know the name of, traveled to the USA around 1912. I have found a record for a Peter Lajter who traveled via Canada to the USA.

Peter returned to the Ukraine in 1920 from New York.

I have found some records of a Nikolaj Lajter travelling to USA via Canada 2 months after Peter arrived. If he is Peter's brother who stayed, I can't seem to find him on any of the US Censuses.

Does anyone know of any current information in their own family tree or anything that can be of help to locate any family? Please?!?

Thank you

Ship Rotterdam voyage from Amsterdam, France & United States

Hello,
My Great Great Grandfather Frank Lawrence Owsianny went back to his native Poland for a visit in 1891. On his return trip to the United States, his port of departure was Amsterdam, Netherlands and Boulogne Sur Mer, France. He sailed on the ship "Rotterdam", and arrived back in the United States in New York on March 23, 1891.
I was wondering if there were any news articles from any New York papers which might have stories about that voyage of the Rotterdam and its arrival in New York City on March 23, 1891. I would be particularly interested in finding out the date of departure for that particular voyage.

Special Note: On a document that I have from Ancestry.com he is listed on the Passenger list for that voyage on the "Rotterdam" as Lorenz Owsianny.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Keith Lawrence

k79lawrence@gmail.com

Several items are not clear to me on the manifest, so I'm hoping to get help reading it.

Franciszek Porembski, Anastazia, ?Aniela?, Jan and Anna

Unclear on the following:

* Does that say Aniela? (They do call her Ann in another record)

*Anna's age. 11/12..does this mean she's 11 months? 10 days later I have the family in Bessemer, MI, on a 1910 census and Anna is listed as age 3.

*Jan's age is 9 on the manifest, but 12 on the census 10 days later. Why?

*Last Perm. res. Austria (which is really Poland in this case) City or town. ? First town is crossed out, which actually I believe is Piwniczna. But town written above/in place of I can't read.

*Is that $200 or 900?

*Been in the States before, if so, when? Does that say 1904/9? Does that mean Frank was here in 1904 UNTIL 1909, or AGAIN in 1909?

*Joining relative or friend, if so who/where? It looks like brother in law in Bessemer, MI..but the name is unclear. However, it seems his sister married a Michael Relich, so is it possible that says Maska Relitz?

*Place of birth. There's that town again, and another cross out of what I believe is Piwniczna. But what's it replaced with?

Petition # 7301-7585 on Dec. (8th or 13th), 1909. I have a copy of that.

I now have found that there are 2 other papers for him:

Declaration of Intention- !909/12/13
Oath of Allegiance- 1912/12/24

Will these give me any further information on him then what is found on his Naturalization papers?
When did they start adding photographs to the Naturalization papers?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Donna

Robert,
That's the trouble. I only have census for 1910 in Lakewood, New Jersey.
Nothing else. this says immigrated 1898 to 1900.

of course my experience is dates on census could be given by someone else that answers the door and dates cannot be trusted.
Was really hopeful about that manifest but sister not with her.
You can see I have little to go on? just wish there were more records of departures. :(

Dale

Dale

The name appears to be from Scandanavia. Family stories can not always be trusted. Have you found either one in any US documents? If so under what name? Which docs? Where did they live in the US? When I stated her Nationality was France that was her citizenship not her ethnicity which was not listed

Robert

Robert,
Thanks for you search and help. I am aware of that manifest. The trouble is she does not have her little sister with her, Josephine. And the story is all the family was dead and gone in Paris so she took Her little sister with her to USA. so that is either another trip or the wrong Natalie,. it also confuses me that if they lived in Paris why are they travelling from up there?
Were children not listed on manifests?
I guess records in France are not obtainable.

Dale

Dale

True if immigrant aliens had enough money they were allowed to leave at the NY dock and did not need to be ferried to Ellis Island

Ship manifests were created listing ALL passengers at the port of depature, including those 1st and 2nd class... so I have no idea what you mean when you say that you were told "was told at Ellis Island when I went there that lst and 2nd class passengers lists were no more"

I find this person arriving during your stated date range, traveling alone nationality France, destination in the US not listed. She is in the Cabin Class.
Their names are Natalie Marie Gronlund and Josephine Gronlund
came first class between 1896 and 1900. From Paris. That is all I have.
I was told at Ellis Island when I went there that lst and 2nd class passengers lists were no more. Also that one young woman of 20 years and her little sister of 10 t0 12 years would not be allowed in without a man or someone to sign for them. Natalie had been offered a teaching job in New Jersey. So perhaps they were picked up that way.
lst and 2nd class passengers never went to ellis island but were allowed to leave the boat and go their way.
Is there anyway to check more than I have. Sorry if post seemed vague. If you have any ideas for me to keep searching I would be soooo happy.
Thanks for responding.
Dale

Hello Jean,

Thank you for looking into Wendelin Spivak.

I used the Třeboň Archive message board in the Country of Czech Republic in Czech Language and got a response from someone in Southern Bohemia. They knew who Wendelin and Albert were and exact record in the Třeboň Archive Southern Bohemia.

Wendelin did emigrate to United States in 1866.
His father's name Albert or Adalbert is Vojtěch (Adalbert in English) Spiewak.

Also Google's Czech to English language translator converts the name spelled Vojtěch to the name Adalbert.

Here is the location of Wendelin and Albert's bith record.

Wendelin Spivak
birth October 17, 1844 in Lomnicě, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.
Roman Catholic Book 5 [register B] 1822-1872 image 127 Capital of parish Lomnice nad Lužnicí
Web Address http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz/DA?lang=en&menu=3&id=533...
then in bottom-left corner of window; use image dropdown box to select image 127

Adalbert Spivak (Czech name Vojtěch)
birth March 27, 1797 in Lomnicě, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia
Roman Catholic Book 4 [register B] 1779-1833 image 52 Capitol of parish Lomnice nad Lužnicí
Web Address http://digi.ceskearchivy.cz/DA?lang=en&menu=3&id=533...
then in bottom-left corner of window; use image dropdown box to select image 52

Albert's wife is Kateřina Filípka (b) May-28-1811 in Kolenec, Bohemia.
Kateřina Filípka is the daughter of
..... Adalbert (Vojtěch) Filípka (b) Apr-16-1780 in Kolenec, Kingdom of Bohemia
.....

Hello, I looked for your Wendel and didn't find him yet.
I do believe I have found him in the 1870 census living in St. Paul, Ramsey, MN, Ward 5, Image 13 on ancestry. The name is Vanderline Spencer, age 25, shoemaker, born Bohemia and Kate Spencer, age 60, born Bohemia. Vanderline Spencer is not a Czech name. There are no other persons with that name on any other census. Looking very closely at the image, you can see how Vendelin Spevcek can be seen. The Kate I believe is his mother Katerina.
Finding her on the immigration may be easier than finding him or brother Caspar.
The only source, off line for the Czech immigration is the Leo Baca books. I have searched them and do not yet find your family. The Czech names can be very confusing reading and transcribing upon immigration.
I find in one newspaper that Wendel used the name Jerome, as the article tells of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Spivak and daughters Anna and Clara, attend a birthday party.
Could he have used Jerome when immigrating?

Jean

1st and 2nd class passenger lists to nyc

seems that passenger lists for above classes are lost for years 1896 to 1900. At least that is what I have read online.
Then on Olive Tree it says that those years are not all indexed. Well now that that perked me up again. Anybody have any good info. on this subject.
Also I have some information about cholera on boat but my years are 1896 to 1900 and a story of how these sisters very young went to an Island and were housed for 2 days and treated very well while ship fumigated and then they returned to ship. anything? thanks so much.

immigration from New York arrival to Texas

Does anyone know common transit from New York to Texas. I have to assume that ship would be cheapest/most practical, but wasn't sure. I have Dietrich family members from East Prussia that traveled to New York by boat but are bound for Texas and I can find no record of their travel there. Another set of family members (Stehle) transshipped to Galveston, but I can find no record of Dietrichs doing the same. Other ports might have been New Orleans I think but no record there either. This was in Dec of 1887 - are there record gaps?
Would love any input...Thanks!!

Hi Pam, Ferdinand and Dorothea had 7 children that I can find. Willem was the eldest and Albert was the fifth child, there was also another who was a sailor and went to US and Canada a few times, he was the fourth son Simon. I also have a cousin who went to Canada. His name is Reinier Brunott, he and his son Jake, had a lot to do with making skates etc. The last info I had was that he lived in Thornhill, Canada.
No doubt as time goes on, I will find more of them living overseas. Nice to hear from you again Cheers Christa

Hello Again Christa, The only reason Albertus and brother William came to the U.S./ Canada was to have a better way of life (better income) I know of no other reason. It was fortunate for them since they missed the second world war and all of it's agony. My grandmother sent some things after the war to Albert's family and got some letters back but then communication seems to have stopped. My grandmother and mother would have loved to know about all the relatives around the world and how they got there. This is very interesting. Thanks again for your interest. Pam

Aliens were either Detained or held for Special Inquiry. There was no such process as "Special Detention."

The LPC stands for Likely to Become a Public Charge. The 11.50 can only be interpreted in the context of the manifest sheet. Who is the alien and what are the details of the arrival?

Other codes can be found here:
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/

The Shaltupsky/Schaltupski in Missouri, that you found, is my family. Morris, wife Sarah, children, and grandchildren are known to me. I'm one of the great grandchildren of Morris and Sarah.

I will correlate some of the basic data and add the first and last names and the dates that I show for immigration and approximate birthdate, if found, for the adults with the surname that were listed in the ship's passage records. They were all from the Grodno area.

Would posting some of that help?

Thanks again for your direction. I greatly appreciate it.
